    You hit the nail on the head. I also have been going through the rounds comparing all of my headsets with various games .
    And I noticed the exact same thing. The Q3 is shockingly good.
    You would think going from a Crystal to Q3 that it would be a larger step down that it actually is.
    There is definetly more to the Q3's resolution boost that just the pixel count of the panels.
    Im pretty sure the Q3 panels must be more dense and smaller than the quest 3 .
    If my Crystal suddenly went up in smoke , I'd get over it as long as I had the quest 3.
    As for the black levels im sure its partly due to the panel being better, but it could also be the lenses. maybe the light is bouncing around less behind the lense before escaping to your eyes. Decreasing overall brightness..just a thought.

    I don't know how it will do if you're also recording but, try these settings:
    1. Odyssey ;-) It has better graphics, deeper contrast, better surface reflections, more modern effects. It's on sale now from Frontier or Steam.
    2. Connect using a Link cable, not WiFi
    3. PC Oculus app, set rendering to 1.3x (first notch there should be fine)
    4. In Odyssey, set HMD = 1.5x
    5. In Oculus Debug tool: Encode Resolution Width = 4128, Encode Bitrate = 400, Spacewarp = off, Tangent multiplier = 1.1,1.1, Link sharpening = normal, I also have Distortion Curvature = low but I haven't notice much of a difference between default or high.
    I run an old i7 9700K and an RTX 3080 (12G). The Elite Dangerous on the Quest 3 looks absolutely perfect in terms of clarity, markedly better than Quest 2 was. I run OpenComposite instead of SteamVR but I'm not sure that still makes a difference.

      Thanks for your thoughts on this, I appreciate you taking the time to share your settings. I'll run through some of the things I've settled on over the years based on your points.
      1. There's a long running debate about Odyssey or remaining on 3.8 (since Horizon is now also on 4.0), and I have to say, I'm still firmly in the 3.8 (Legacy) camp. This is primarily because the aliasing is so poor in Odyssey (which affects VR far more than the flat version), and although I appreciate the more realistic lighting I still feel 3.8 looks significantly better in most aspects. But this is definitely a personal opinion, and I've seen huge threads weighing up the positives and negatives of each version in VR.
      2. Yes, I go back and forth on wired link. I think I'd certainly use that if I want the absolute best version possible in the Quest 3 - especially since it's seated and the cable doesn't bother me in that situation.
      3. I monitor performance heavily and also go back and forth on refresh rates/fps options a lot. Some days I feel like 72fps is fine, other days I really want to push for those 90fps.
      4. Again, I alter in-game SS and in-game HMD image quality ratios a lot. I have tended to settle on 1.0 SS and 1.5 HMD Image quality as well (for now).
      5. Next time I use my Link cable, I'll give those specific settings a try. Thanks.

      I used to own the Samsung Odyssey myself and it will be difficult for the Q3 to reach those black levels. If that is particularly important to you then you might be disappointed. While I’d like better black levels, I accept it as a compromise on the Q3 for the other advantages of the headset.

    • @zakblue
      @zakblue 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've tried ED with many headsets over the years. CV1, Oculus rift S, Quest 2 and for me playing ED with airlink set to max bandwidth and res at 1.3 on q3 is the best experience vs those previous. I remember going to the Rift S and playing ED and seeing the lack of blacks vs CV1 was a bit of an eyesore. I recently owned the PSVR2 headset and although I didn't get to try ED (VR not supported on PS5) the black level factor in games is overrated imho. I am mildly short sighted glasses wearer and actually having white text next to complete OLED black caused my eyes to do mini-godrays and made text harder to read. I even bought prescription lenses but that didn't help. It may be different for others. You do get a great sense of deep space with the quest 3 and the blacks not being inky black is not a factor. I played for about 2 hours last night and I didn't think of it once. The colours are very vibrant and it makes up for black level floor. I think the only issue I have with ED at the moment is the 'antialiasing bob' but I haven't tried any other versions apart from the current release so I'm experimenting with that. Overall though if you want a good headset for ED i'm confident that the Q3 is the goto unless you want to wait for PSVR2 to do proper PCVR support down the road.

    What is it like with the Quest 3 compared to Quest 2?

    • @ImmersedRobot
      @ImmersedRobot  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The Quest 3's lenses make the biggest difference when compared to the Quest 2 in my opinion - especially in Elite. The edge to edge clarity, and general lack of glare (although it is certainly still there in places) makes all the difference.
      The resolution bump is also welcome, but perhaps not quite the alteration I had been expecting. However, I should make it clear that it had been a few months since I'd used my Quest 2 in Elite before trying the Quest 3 so it's entirely possible I'd feel the change was far more stark if I had the opportunity to A-B them directly in one playsession.
      I'd highly recommend the Quest 3 as a nice increase in experience for PC VR, but your mileage may vary.

      That's a shame. I'd encourage you to perhaps try again, since the experience can certainly be vastly improved in VR. Do you have any specific details on the issue?
      Did you try starting SteamVR through Virtual Desktop before activating Elite Dangerous? Are you using the Steam version of Elite? If so, perhaps try launching the game through the separate launcher once SteamVR is already running.
      There are numerous frustrations in resolving the issue of it launching in 2D when playing in VR, but it's not a lost cause.

    Obviously the Pimax looks better than the Q3...as it should for more than QUADRUPLE the cost. For the price, nothing comes close to the Q3.

    • @ImmersedRobot
      @ImmersedRobot  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree that, for the price, nothing can be recommended beyond the Quest 3 right now. If I didn't put in a quick word on the Pimax Crystal (since I've been covering it so heavily on the channel), then I'd have inevitably received comments such as "how does it compare to the Crystal?". That's why I mention it.
      I could also have said that, "look, the Index is twice the price of the Quest 3, but the Quest 3 looks better and has a higher resolution." So the opposite case you argue for can also be true.
      The point is, I'm generally rambling in this video and mention things which pop into my head. The Crystal comparison only arose because I'd been covering it so much, and also because I knew I'd be asked the question if I didn't mention it. It's an absolute nightmare trying to cover all bases on these types of videos... I think I'm done with it.

      @ImmersedRobot Fair enough. I sent my Quest 2 back after trying the Q3, even though I only paid $195.USD for it. I don't know if it's 'worth it', but the blurriness in the Q2 was giving me dizziness that I don't get now with the Q3. The clarity is substantially better.

    With an RTX 3090 Ti I run ED at a pretty high quality using Virtual Desktop connected with WiFi to a Linksys Hydra 6e. The problems start when I disembark on foot on planets and it reverts to a simple screen. Anyone knows how to make it good or it is simply not possible? • @ImmersedRobot
      @ImmersedRobot  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unfortunately on-foot sections perform quite badly in Elite Dangerous Odyssey in VR. The fact it switches to a flat display is unavoidable, although interestingly, if you use the vanity cam while on-foot it will revert to VR. I've used this a few times to explore a planet, but it isn't really viable to play that way for any length of time due to HUD issues and general gameplay while in camera mode.

    • @Aviator-ce1hl
      @Aviator-ce1hl 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ImmersedRobot but with the Rift S I was playing on foot without any problem, I believe the problem in this case is using VirtualDesktop while it is great for VR when you use it as flat screen it is not that good. For example it reverts to the screen resolution which I usually keep low if I play in VR because not useful to have it high. Maybe a matter of settings?

    • @ImmersedRobot
      @ImmersedRobot  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Aviator-ce1hl well, the Rift S has a lower native resolution which alone means the Quest 3 is much more demanding at its native resolution. Adding into this the extra overhead to encode/decode the video over Virtual Desktop then that would make the game require much higher hardware requirements to match your Rift S framerate.
      Adjusting settings to reduce resolution, and perhaps running at 72fps might resolve the problem at the cost of visual fidelity obviously.

      I've had this exact issue when running through Air Link (I haven't actually used the Link cable in Quest 3 yet, but the same applies). From what I can gather there is an audio bug in the Oculus desktop software which means it can't recognise either the microphone or the audio output. The solution to this is to basically re-install the drivers. I've done this, and it works, but then the problem reappears after a while. For this reason I've been using Virtual Desktop almost exclusively for PC VR in the Quest 3 since it avoids this issue.

Once the next gen launches AA/AAA games will be designed around the new top end (5090) and the 5080 will have the same performance as the 4090 for much less. The 4090 is already a year old so at most you have 2 years left of enjoying the best PC gaming can offer but odds are they will launch the 50 series in about 1 year and not 2.

      VD on High Streaming options and Medium in some places. I have my WifI6 router set to the 160 mhz band @ 5Ghz and it's a blast.

      Agree - but just ignore the ground based stuff (other than exobiology which actually isn't that much of a hassle without VR). I stopped after Oddy because of the abyssmal coding and framerates that were more like a slideshow but returned to it a couple of months ago and to be fair, the bugs seem to be ironed out and it's very playable on a 2070, i7 and a Quest 2 - worth dipping into again if you were fed up like the rest of us after the balls up of Oddy

      @@dennisphillips9089 How much did you pay Frontier for those 4000 hours? These are simulations, not games with a storyline that ends in 3 to 5 hours. Oddly people still complain about the cost which is about the same as going to the cinema or having a pizza with your friends, which is ridiculous. On a more positive note the on-foot VR is glorious once you master the third person camera view. Also the SRV turret view while driving, amazing. It's all we get for now and no other space game in vr comes close, so it's take it or leave it.

      You can increase the bitrate to a slightly higher level in the Oculus Debug Tool, and a cable allows you to probably push that up higher than Air Link or VD. But for the amount of difference it offers, I prefer to stick to wireless options.

    People, are you blind or what? Don't you see these flickers? It doesn't matter what kind of graphics card you have, even a 4090. This is a general problem, and the flickers are visible everywhere. I just can't believe that someone is playing and doesn't see these flickers. Every station, every planet, everything flickers and is covered in these stupid jaggies.

      Apologies for not replying to your other comment on a previous video. I usually go through comments once a week and missed it this time.
      What you're referring to is aliasing, and it's a huge problem in the 4.0 version of Elite Dangerous (Horizons 4.0 and Odyssey). The ways to mitigate it are to change the anti-aliasing methods in the graphics settings (which will have limited results in Odyssey or 4.0 Elite), or by increasing resolution scaling and HMD image quality (both of which will have huge impact on performance of course).
      The only other alternative is to play the Legacy version of Elite (3.8) which is what I'm doing in this video. The latest version of Elite looks much worse in VR due to the updated engine having massive aliasing problems. Some people can get past it, and I have tried to do that myself. But, like you, I hate the flickering 'pixel crawl' effect in VR so I tend to focus on the Legacy version. This is not ideal since I also like to play the live game (something which isn't possible in the Legacy version), but the graphics in VR have taken a hit in my opinion.

      Capturing 60fps footage of a game running at 72, 80 or 90fps will always look as if it is dropping frames even if it isn’t. The footage on screen may look more jerky than a native 60fps game even if it is actually running at a stable, and much higher framerate, in the headset.

      @ImmersedRobot Yep. Ignore the clowns with the 4090 who just want to show everyone how much money they waste to play games. They can't wait to type the phrase 'on my 4090' 😂 It's the 1080ti/2080ti/3090 syndrome all over again. I can easily 'afford it'. But I have a life. I have a 4070ti and that was way more than I wanted to spend, but I had given my son my 3070 for a new build, so I needed something.
