I have a Kubota Z411 that is 4 years old. all of a sudden the pto would not engage blades. thought I was going to have to replace it, until I found this site. This HACK really does work just as he says. I could not have been more happy, took about 10 min. and I was cutting again .👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much for this couldn't have come at a better time. My Sears 24hp was down for a month with a starting bug which finally ended up to being a ground & crud inside the key switch & a small spring laid over. Meanwhile had clutch off & cleaned up to replace the belt & blade worked great at 1st then had to hold it out by hand finally putting a bungee on it. Then it quit & I read your hack. Seems I had to drill the hole deeper than expected thinking I'd hit wiring or? Been working great for 3 weeks now & cancelled order for a new switch. Btw 54dg. here in Iowa now but 90's expected again for the weekend. Thanks again!!
Nice one! Never really tried that way. I made a connector to bypass to the on position a long time ago I use to test if it's the switch or one of the many relays, fuses, or safeties though. (If it's easy to get ahold of the plug on the bottom of the switch I'll usually test if it's the switch before pulling the multimeter out.)
I’m going to try that! Recently the switch (large button) exactly like yours, on my DR POWER XL30 is not engaging the blade. Everything else works perfectly, I checked the cable and everything is fine. But the large button isn’t working to make the blade spin. I am going to try it this evening. Thank you 🙏!!!
Is that a Z720A? I have one with very low hours and the blades come on but it bogs the motor way down for a few seconds. Do you know what may cause that?
John Deere had a service bulletin out for this problem. They did not recommend this process because they were losing sales on new switches! Just kidding. I have 3 JD mowers that use this switch and will try this if I have a switch go bad, thanks for the advice!
Ive had to do this on my pto switch AND a few solenoid switches when they don't make connection en just click then plug the holes with grease or soft wax till it needs some more WD en some blast'in
Awesome video. Can you please do one on proper belt tension. Also one on battery voltage requirement for an electric clutch to work. Thanks you are the best on TH-cam
Its unseasonably cool here cause of IDA rained all night and all day today its 75 degrees at the moment. Thanks for the hack. That might come in handy in a pinch for me.
Hey I have a mower that sometimes works the blades come on my PTO.So I have restart the engine I I have to put my levers in neutral then it work can you explain it to me
I am having a heck of a time with my PTO nothing seems to work I checked all of the safety switches I checked the actual PTO switch but nothing seems to get it going even purchased a new PTO switch im stumped
Looks like a great fix. I think you might take a hot glue gun and put a dab on the hole to keep trash from doing the same thing again. That would be a quick easy fix. Thanks as always for the great info!
I have a JD Z810A mower, i run over some roots and my pto disengaged the blades. I reset the pto and blades come back on. Now the blades keep disengaging mostly in thick grass but will restart when i reset the pto switch off and back on. Any suggestions on troubleshooting? Thank you, Floyd
I have a JD X300, 443 hours, 42" deck. Lots of trouble with it in last 3 years. This is the latest. Happened just today, same behavior as in this vid. Just. Quit. while mowing, then blades wouldn't engage. Switch is very different looking, rectangular and about 2-3" long. Is it possible that it's the same problem in this mower? And would it be just the switch that needs replacing, or the clutch too? Thanks.
Hello, maybe you can answer this question. The battery in my lawnmower John Deere is dead, so I started with a jumper battery. Once the lawnmower is running I try to run the blades, but they won't engage. Is it because the battery is dead but the engine running?
I have a 2008 exmark lazer z hp 52". My blades engage but keep cutting out after a few miniutes. If I engage them at a lower rpm they seem to stay engaged longer but as soon as I boost up the rpms , they cut out again? I have replaced the pto switch 2x so I know it's not that. Any ideas?
@MrFloyd1968 somehow it got lose and was rubbing on the belt is what happened. I replaced it and everything worked great. Got a new one on Amazon for like $15
I have an old exmark turf ranger and my switch is going bad. I need another but since it is so old they don't make the same type. I cannot figure out what type of switch I can use. It is an exmark turf ranger s/N 179,000 range. the switch that parts tree has is not the same connection. What should i do.
From Don's Small engine repair can you tell people what kind of spark plug they need for the equipment they have and is there a chart that tells you what you need for that engine
What is the problem when your blades won't turn all the way off?? After turning the PTO switch off the blades still spin about 500 to 1000 rpm or so and never quit. Turn the switch back on and the blades are back to full speed and turn the switch back off and they are low speed again but won't never completely quit spinning.
@@user-to1tx9mt1eBeen operating my farm equipment for over 50 years and never engage any piece of equipment at full throttle and some of those pieces are still working flawlessly.
I would say that MOST of us right off went and bought a new switch and so this here is not needed....but that's a cool trick anyway......LOL.....today I am installing a NEW clutch and noticed there are cracks in the drive belt.....maybe I just need to buy a new tractor LOL....almost every part on this one is new now!
Sure hope this works so I don't have to pull the 3/4 full gas tank on my Cub Cadet LTX 1046 to get to the release points on the switch to remove it.....
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 Any ideas as to what can cause a delay in blades kicking in on an L110? I already tightened the belt. The lever seems nice & tight when I flip it to engage the blades. I have to sit for maybe 10 seconds for them to kick in or sometimes I have to put it in reverse. Very weird.
Mine was working intermittenly for a while before failing completely. No continuity between 2 switch terminals so I bought a new switch. I kept the old one so I'll try this trick and see if I can get continuity between those 2 switch terminals. Edit: Didn't work for me.

Great tip. Haven't seen that one. Might have to plug the hole up so the rain and stuff doesn't get in. Depending on if a new switch is coming.

Most likely, it’s the safety interlock module

yes, you need a working battery for the (electric) clutch to work
Contact cleaner or tuner cleaner works better!

Will that Hack demonstrated in the video using WD40 applied to the PTO switch work on a Toro Z420 ?

Bad clutch or improperly mounted clutch
