- Today finds us on a new creek, kayaking and looking for more arrowheads and it looks like it is going to be a good one. We found a great assortment of beautiful arrowheads and other artifacts including an amazing Bayou Goula. This is a different kind of hunt with us having to use our kayaks to get to certain parts of it. This is a must see video for any arrowhead enthusiast.

I have just started creek hunting this year.Found a creek thats next to one of South jerseys biggest native archaeology sites and Me and a friend have pulled about ten points out of a fifty yard section of creek with more points up and downstream but not at that dense of a cluster as in the 50 yard Honey Hole. We have been finding them on the surface on the bottom of the creek in the deeper holes and on top of the sand bars.The creek bottom is sand and gravel and at most groin deep.fast in sone spots and medium in others but always moving.The Honey Hole has a low shelf of land on it's south bank high enough for a camp and about 200 yards from the main Village site called Indian head. Apparently points can be found at any depth and on sand or gravel from what we've found but what I want to know is where would be the best spots to dig.I have bought me a feed scoop like you guys use and have a non floating 14 inch square trapping sifter. Should i dig into the sand bars that follow the creek flow or concentrate in the deeper holes and depressions under logs where the gravel is most dense? Last few times I have been there I have found nothing.I think we worked it out,at least till the next flood,unless of course we dig in the creek bed.Also found a real nice triangular corner notch in a bluff on another creek by scraping bluff face with a trowel into sifter then reaching down into creek and shaking.Fourth sifter full Bingo!. haven't found one there since. Thanks for any pointers.I like creeks because it's cool in summer and most of the points are not broken like when I field hunt.
I would concentrate on the pockets of gravel wherever you find them. That's what we do and it works pretty good. Digging sand is tough and you have to dig deep enough to get into any rock layer beneath. That said, we have heard it can be done. We like the creeks for the same reason, better quality all the way around. Good luck and happy hunting!

lol You have to weigh your fear of some creatures against your desire to find an artifact. We would wrestle a grizzly bear if we thought he was standing between us and a good point. Not really lol.

And everytime I have a chance I'm watching your videos. I can't get enough! I grew up in Mississippi creeks and fields... never knew what I could be walking on. Gonna take the kids this summer, as usual, but now we'll have a new activity to do.

when you guys found that red bead, it looked like there was another smaller grey bead that made it through the mesh. you should make a smaller strainer to run the smaller stuff through. just a tip! Good stuff guys!

Thanks David. It was a great day for sure. I have wanted to find a bead for 38 years and Kenneth finds one in his first year lol. That's the way it goes. He works hard at it and deserves it. He really wasn't wanting to leave but it was getting late . That's how we came up with the idea for us dragging him out lol.

In fact they encouraged us to get in the creeks and dig for years but we just couldn't "wrap our minds" around it. Once we tried it we were hooked on the creeks. I just bought me 2 of those plastic sand scoops off of amazon and would you recommend a small Old Town canoe say about 10 ft. for getting down river and searching some river islands that would not be too hard to paddle back up river !!!!

It's something about the deeper the boat that I like as far as feeling more sturdy of safe and it only weighs about 50 lbs. give or take !!! And its a one seater of course !!! with plenty of cargo space if needed !!!

I broke down and bought a fishing kayak.. I've only had it out once and found a couple of brokes.. but the kayak really helps get u into those hard to reach areas and helps packing in your gear.. This summer will be interesting..

Because of no till farming in our area (northern Ohio), river, creek & lake shorelines are very productive places to look. Over 60 years of scouring farm fields& shorelines I've had a lot of fun&a found some very nice artifacts. You guys carry on, good luck to ya!

Seems to me most of your creek finds are always small roughly made points mostly made of the same kind of brownish colored flint.No matter what creek, they just look the same to me. Am i right or am i wrong?
Yes sir, you are absolutely correct. The material they had to work with was limited to gravel chert or Tallahatta quartzite with the latter being at a premium in our area. Most gravel chert is yellow to brown until heat treated then you'll start to see the reds come out. Our area is also loaded with late Archaic to early Woodland points with Gary and Pontchatrain points being very common.

Yea stone beads are very few and far between. Around here we find a lot of glass trade beads and stuff but the stone ones i have only 1 of in 20 years. My dad has i think 3 in 40 years. We pretty much just surface hunt, i would love to start sifting and stuff but the laws are kinda weird and make me nervous lol
What makes me like your channel is that i can totally feel the excitement you guys have for this, and it makes me smile cause i completely understand, i love that feeling when you find a beautiful point. Its just somethin else

good to see you fellas got some yaks & they already paid off, one thing I like about them, it takes very little water to float one, even heavily loaded, y'all found a full pocket on goodn's, loved seeing that little Bouya point, think I found one of those here one time long ago, as we find a lot of conch shell and TX style points here, so I don't see why not LA point to be hiding in the mix, Kenneth is really bit by the rock now. best wishes Y'ALL

Thanks for the question. As the points wash off the ridges and into the creek they are swept along in the current until they are stopped by something such as an eddy or a log.
How long do you believe endogenous culture goes back?
Thanks for the question. In our area, I would say to around 12,000 years.
Heartbreaker Relics Thanks for your reply I think you are right. I do believe that in the Canadian north it could go back as far as 30,000. Years only because populations probably crossed over the North Pole. But never made it further south.

I wonder if the indians that were here just before the settlers came even had to make their own arrowheads? Or did they just look down and pick them up. Just thinking out loud.
No doubt they came across old points from time to time and reused them.
How do you pick a spot out on the creek? Also, is there any chance of finding anything on a small creek?
Thanks for watching and for the question. We usually look for pockets of isolated gravel. We learn something every time we go and lately we have been sifting larger gravel bars with some great success. Each creek is different so try different areas but always areas where gravel will collect. Smaller creeks can produce some great artifacts. Remember to always get permission.

The photography is amazing,that place screams native encampment and gators....lol I wish you guys could do a video on why the artifacts are named what they are like what's almost lake and a goula? That bead is off the charts can you just imagine the person who made that looking down and smiling? Great video you guys
First, thanks for another great comment. Next that sounds like it would be a good idea. It would take some research but it is doable. We are not very well versed on our point types but we could bring in someone who is. Like you I couldn't help but think of someone making that bead. Creeks! I cannot imagine! Either and in any way - WORK = success!
When it was suggested to us many years ago we should get into the creeks and dig we couldn't wrap our minds around the idea even though we saw the artifacts these folks had found in the creeks. It just seemed like such a stretch. Luckily our first point in a creek came fairly easy and it has been a blast since then. By far my favorite way to hunt them. Thanks again and GL&HH.

Thanks. We get the scoopers from a feed store or Tractor Supply and drill the holes in them ourselves.
I wish that you would show us some of that petrified wood I would like to have some of it if I ever go to Mississippi Point hunting I would like to see how big the pieces are and what it looks like because it's so different in every area of the United States really enjoy your videos and they've been quite educational to me you know I have a hookah diving system which is surface to play dare to be very interesting to dive in some of those pools that you have on that Creek because in a big storm a lot of stuff of the worst into the pools and lower areas be interesting to the dive in thoses and fan around there I bet you'll find quite a bit

Damn good spot y'all found! That Bayougula (bet I misspelled that horribly) is a beautiful piece of work; I can imagine some poor hunter moaning about losing his best point into the water or bank and hunting all over for it. And that BEAD. O_O!!! And the drills-- I flintknap, but I can't seem to get the hang of making drills yet. More practice..... I have to say, I'm envious of the beautiful stone that the old knappers in that area had available. It's really beautiful stuff, very pure and clean. Also, got a question for you: Have any of you ever had your points put to an arrow or dart-shaft, just to see how they'd look? As a fair-to-middling amateur knapper, I'd love to see some authentic points actually set to shafts-- if you have (or are going to), could you please post pics? I don't think I've seen that anywhere-- new points, yes, but not old ones, ever. Thanks!
I'm going kayaking down the Verde River for three days here in AZ in a month; maybe I'll find me a point or two myself. Here's hoping! (BTW, when Randy had his face in the water, I kept expecting him to act like a gator'd got him. :P That's what I would've done.)
Thanks for the great comment. We have never had one of our points mounted on a shaft. Most of the material used in this area is Mississippi Citronelle gravel chert (river rock). A lot of it is heat treated. Also that is one of the reasons we don't find really large stuff. The rocks just aren't that big. The Tallahatta quartzite of course is different. That's one reason we like it so much. Good luck on your kayak trip and stay safe.
Those are all really beautiful and that bead is awesome, but I agree with you Spike, no way I’d get in that dark water!!
Randy and I have about 60 years collectively between us hunting these artifacts. We each do have a game ball but neither of us have ever found a bead. Kenneth starts and in his first year has found some absolutely killer artifacts. But then again, it's in his blood line.

It probably was part of a necklace but it could have been decoration for clothing or head dress or maybe earrings. In any case, we will be back looking for more of it.
Great video guys. One question is that 3x3 (3/8 in ) wire? It looks 1/2 inch to me. In my opinion 1/4 inch is too small and 1/2 is inch too big. I've only found a couple places that sells a three-by-three and they're higher than a kite on price. so just curious. good luck on your next hunt.
Thanks and thanks for the question. This is one of the last videos where we used 1/2 inch hardware cloth. If you noticed Randy had already upgraded to 1/4 inch. The 1/4 is really light and will break easily so we had to start layering it over the 1/2 inch stuff. In the video after this one we almost lost a couple of little bird points and that is when we swapped over to the double layered 1/4 over 1/2. I have included a link to that video. We have found a local hardware store that will sell it by the foot and it is really reasonable. I don't know that I've ever seen 3/8 inch around here.
