"look at me! wasted away to practically nothing!" was the quote the capped Ursula as being my favourite since I was little. Now that I'm older, I love how it cemented her characterization!
Pat Carrol has a great voice. She also played Jon's grandmother in the Garfield Christmas and Thanksgiving specials. Part of your world is one of the best Disney songs of all time.
3:38 I looove it, so good! And her voice is so great. In my childhood I was afraid of Ursula, but today I really like her, one of my favourite vaillains
Man It makes me sad to see Howard Ashman in these interviews... What a great talent. He will certainly be missed. I think he had a soft spot for the Character of Ursula she was such a force in the Music and so theatrical which makes her one of the best Disney Villains of all time Love Pat Carroll she really is great and is still doing the voiceovers for Ursula till this day.
I love how Kathy Ziekinski talks about watching Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard to get some inspiration for some of Ursula's mannerisms- I always think that old movies are great places for animators to look for inspiration!
I had seen this movie so many times before I even knew that they were voiced by someone else. (And not just real merfolkes). So, when I saw Jodi Benson singing 'Part of your World' in person... it seemed to me like Ariel was voicing her...
@TRISAND I know how you feel. Sometimes, we all want to be something that we know is not real. But the best thing is that even though it may seem impossible, we always use our imagination. And THAT is the key to being what it is we dream of being.
I love, love, love hearing from the wonderful, brilliant people who made these films. :D But the funny thing is, Ursula (who IS marvelously theatrical and deliciously wicked!) doesn't have tentacles...they're really called arms. xD
I watched the 89' VHS last night it was so good! I like watching it the way it was meant to be seen rather than the updates. With the expception of Beauty and the Beast in 3D!!!1
Ursula has to be one of the BEST villains in Disney history; Pat Carroll honestly was just perfect for her voice! She was always the most memorable villain, her along with Hades, and I really loved to hate Mother Gothel in Tangled recently!
lol OH U DISNEY. As flat and unchanging as their villains are in terms of motivation and character development, you gotta lovehate them for having such energetic personalities and dynamic design. Complete opposite of Miyazaki villains or antagonists/characters...flat design and AWESOME CHANGE IN DEVELOPMENT. :OOO Thanks for the upload btw, this is great stuff.
Before my father died he met Buddy Hackett. My mom told me this story after he died. I was like how awesome would it be to meet my favorite actor and actress from a Disney film. I finally saw Idina Menzel in concert a few years later and I loved her. I finally got my prayers answered.
@olliezlol I have to agree, Hades and Ursula are my favorite Disney villains. Is it weird that they kind of look similiar? Like they could be cousins or something...!
@jollycakes I agree with you to some extent.. I am very fond of Pixar which was made by Disney before is became its own company.. but the old classics such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid are how they should make cartoon movies if you ask me... but digital has its pluses too....like effects are better in movies etc.. :)
@jollycakes Very true! And it depends on the digital stuff for what you define as "cool". The people at Pixar; their digital animation is AMAZING!!!! But when you use computers to create drawings that someone else could've drawn out by hand (like in the straight-to-DVD Disney Princess movies or in the sequals like Lion King 1 1/2), then it's just laziness. Either way, neither can compare to the artistry and heart that goes into hand-drawn animation!!!
@AiMXBenson It was the last Disney movie that was done in the traditional ink-and-paint method, but their CAPS system made their following movies even better looking while retaining that hand-drawn goodness! And it made life much easier for the animators :)
@Spectacular66 I gree...still, I also have the thought that making things easier with digital stuff its not 100% good becouse the digital thing remains some of dedication and commitment. Of course I am not talking about every movie, just some of them :/ There still are great animated movies made out of the new tecnology...its just that not like old times...
how can you put down award winning music that helped to bring back disney in the early nineties, from a man thats genius and has won so many awards- Dommonn you don't sounds too bright
The hostess reminds me of the annoying blonde in Addams Family Values, the girl in the summer camp. I keep waiting for Wednesday to throw her into the sea.
I don´t know you guys but I love hand drawing disney movie much more than this new digital stuff...The little mermaid its the last disney movie to be made that way and its a masterpiece of the Disney movies!!
Alyssa is so cute in this, she was always a great actress, I am 26 and I remember her on Who's The Boss. My two favorite disney villains are Ursula and Maleficent! I can imitate Ursula's voice right down to the "T" Ursula always reminds me of a drag queen, they actually used Divine as the inspiration for Urusla. They did not tell you that here, but THEY DID! I have heard Disney is going to make a movie about Maleficent, I can't wait for that one! Disney villains RULE!
That's what I do because I can sing this song really good for a guy. But during the evening when I like to practice Disney songs if I ever sing "Part Of You World" and if I can't focus or if I can't get the phrasing right I turn off all the lights in my room every little speck of light will turned off and I have this little portable disco ball motor with the ball attached and sit in front of my dresser mirror and it a makes my room look like its under water.
Triton was the son of Poseidon, God of the sea therefore he is related to Hades, Hercules and all the characters in Hercules! Ursula on the other hand is a Disney created Character up to my knowledge. But in the movie Ursula was originally going to be Ariels aunt, hints why she says "my day in the palace" they revel this in the musical though.
@robirdsfilmmaker this era is better your right, but if disney made more hand drawn films disney could go back to the way it was, I'm sure they'll go back eventually as they make more hand drawn films and get back to their roots, i know this cus i heard that their going back to hand drawn animation, they said their gonna release one once every 1 or 2 years if i remember correctly
@maleficentdiva well she should remind you of a drag queen, as the inspiration for her was DIVINE. an old school drag queen who passed away before the movie was debuted. However Your two fav villains are mine as well. GO URSULA AND MALEFICENT!
My sister's name is Arielle and she was born the year the movie came out, 1989. I'm so jealous that my sister shares the same name as a beloved Disney character. I wish my name was like Arista or something...
2:25 Youch, no way would anyone use that for their hair. And it's more like a Fork than a Dinglehopper, but Animals through their Perspectives might not see things like us.
"look at me! wasted away to practically nothing!"

Pat Carrol has a great voice. She also played Jon's grandmother in the Garfield Christmas and Thanksgiving specials. Part of your world is one of the best Disney songs of all time.
“In my head, she’s an old Shakespearien actress.” LOVE that description!
Alyssa's such a wonderful host.
I think they cast Ursula brilliantly
3:38 I looove it, so good! And her voice is so great. In my childhood I was afraid of Ursula, but today I really like her, one of my favourite vaillains
Ursula was my favorite part of the making of the movie! Her voice AND her expressions are so amusing because they're very dramatic.
One of my favorite Disney movies... nothing beats the classic.
Jodi Benson's recording session for "Part of Your World" was amazing.
there is just something so comforting about vhs
omg Pat Carrol's voice is like absolute perfection!!!!
I'm obsessed with her voice- herevil laugh is amazing!! Love it!
I love how Kathy Ziekinski talks about watching Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard to get some inspiration for some of Ursula's mannerisms- I always think that old movies are great places for animators to look for inspiration!
Really glad they talked about Scuttle, one of my favorite characters ^_^
I read on Wikipedia that the events at the beginning of the second movie occur more than a decade after the end of the first movie.
I had seen this movie so many times before I even knew that they were voiced by someone else. (And not just real merfolkes). So, when I saw Jodi Benson singing 'Part of your World' in person... it seemed to me like Ariel was voicing her...
My favourite Disney Movie of all time!
The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney fairytale! I always cry when I watch it!
I would do anything for Pat Carrolls voice! So stunning :D
Alyssa is great in this!
Alyssa Milano is just the cutest then and now lover her
when she laughs at 5:52, she IS ursula!!!
Absolutely!!
@TRISAND I know how you feel. Sometimes, we all want to be something that we know is not real. But the best thing is that even though it may seem impossible, we always use our imagination. And THAT is the key to being what it is we dream of being.
Me too! It also means no scandals or paparazzi.
Pat Carroll is so cool!
I have this on the DVD!! I love this movie sooooooooooo much!!!
For Some Reason, Ursula is my favorite Disney Villain
I adore Buddy's big, buggy eyes!!! So amazing!!! ^__^
I love, love, love hearing from the wonderful, brilliant people who made these films. :D
But the funny thing is, Ursula (who IS marvelously theatrical and deliciously wicked!) doesn't have tentacles...they're really called arms. xD
Pat Carroll gives a tour de force performance in this film! One of the great villains of all time.
OH WOW! I love Sunset Blvd! I had no idea they used Gloria Swanson as a way to draw up Ursula.. im just speechless
I like this making hosted by Samantha Micelli from "Who's the Boss?".
I watched the 89' VHS last night it was so good! I like watching it the way it was meant to be seen rather than the updates. With the expception of Beauty and the Beast in 3D!!!1
Because in the Musical she is revealed as her aunt, they reveled something new to us so she is her aunt
Ursula has to be one of the BEST villains in Disney history; Pat Carroll honestly was just perfect for her voice! She was always the most memorable villain, her along with Hades, and I really loved to hate Mother Gothel in Tangled recently!
lol OH U DISNEY.

That's a very moving story! What a great family tradition.
@LegallyTan yes but its all worth the hard work these hand drawn movies are a instant classic!
My Goodness! Ursula is just great and so into the role!
@olliezlol I have to agree, Hades and Ursula are my favorite Disney villains. Is it weird that they kind of look similiar? Like they could be cousins or something...!
4:23 Oh oh. My tv has bad signal xD Like the good all days.
@zouru thats because Ursula's voice is her's .
The voice actress for Ursula sounds the same in real life, awesome
Buddy I love you and Scuttle RIP!!!! :.....(

Pat Caroll is amazing i love her in this and in freedom writers :)
1:30 - (as Ariel) Could you put that telescope down and stop shouting? I'm right in front of you. Loved TLM a lot more since the 6th grade.
@miulfelle Yes, he died about 7 years ago back in 2003
it would be so fun to be a voice of a cartoon
I miss the old days :(
Oh my gosh! I fricken love Pat Carol!
Pat Carroll was an excellent choice! Her vioce is so theatrical and ha a very unique sound.
@jollycakes actually the digital stuff is so UNcool ........ those drawings are the best .
@jollycakes Very true! And it depends on the digital stuff for what you define as "cool". The people at Pixar; their digital animation is AMAZING!!!! @jollycakes ikr. but do you realize how much time and effort it takes animating on paper?
i am 18 and i love this movie!!! this is my favorite movie, what happened to the old disney??
Audacious
Rebellious
Independent
Enthusiastic
Laudable
@AiMXBenson It was the last Disney movie that was done in the traditional ink-and-paint method, but their CAPS system made their following movies even better looking while retaining that hand-drawn goodness! And it made life much easier for the animators :)
man im in LOVE with Ursulas voice actress, she is a freakin sexy granny! I'd have her give me a potion any day!
This is my fave movie
@Spectacular66 I gree...still, I also have the thought that making things easier with digital stuff its not 100% good becouse the digital thing remains some of dedication and commitment.
Of course I am not talking about every movie, just some of them :/ There still are great animated movies made out of the new tecnology...its just that not like old times...
@KWolfe991 theres no way you couldve watched this movie when you were five and it be 25 years after it came out, because it came out in 1989.
I think that with Tangled, it is :)
3:47 Keep an extra close watch 3:52 She may be the 🔑 to 🧜♂️’s undoing
I LOVE "The Little Mermaid" and Ariel!!!
@MMKursch The inspiration for Ariel herself - Alyssa Milano
@jollycakes completely agreed :D it really is magical
The dutch Ursela love her so much!!, she is very good.
how can you put down award winning music that helped to bring back disney in the early nineties, from a man thats genius and has won so many awards-
Dommonn you don't sounds too bright
The hostess reminds me of the annoying blonde in Addams Family Values, the girl in the summer camp. I keep waiting for Wednesday to throw her into the sea.
@roro21 hmm... good point
Haha, Buddy Hackett is great :D
7:22 I’m stuck

I have a big Ursula tattoo on my back! I love her!
Alyssa is so cute in this, she was always a great actress, I am 26 and I remember her on Who's The Boss. My two favorite disney villains are Ursula and Maleficent! Haha, just kidding! It's different than the one I have.
That's what I do because I can sing this song really good for a guy. Alyssa Milano served as body model for Ariel. Several years later she herself became a mermaid in "Charmed".
Rock on! i'd love to live my second life in the sea kingdom.

I wish my name was like Arista or something...
Sometimes I forget that Ursula is blue-skinned.
scuttles uhmazing
Alyssa sounds like Vanessa Hudgens :).
7:00 --- People dont have eyebrows like that anymore...lol
lmao. DINGLEHOPPER!!
2:25 Youch, no way would anyone use that for their hair. And it's more like a Fork than a Dinglehopper, but Animals through their Perspectives might not see things like us.
AHHHHH @ 6:41

I have also heard that Ursula was inspired by Divine.
