    I bought a 2017 Police Interceptor Sedan (Taurus), and it had this model PTU shown in the video. This video helped me immensely despite some minor differences in the surrounding components, just wanted to drop a comment and a like. Much appreciated.
    I was thrilled to see pretty decent looking gear oil come out when I got the drain off. So glad it wasn't the goopy mess I've seen in other videos. Probably won't need to touch it for 30k as you stated, just glad I don't have to worry about it anymore.

      Don't get me started in the damn water pumps in the 3.5. What moron engineer decided it was smart to put the water pump inside the damn engine?!?! 😳 instead of just unbolting it and bolting a new one on when it starts weeping, nope. Tear the whole front end off the motor, may as well do chains, tensioners, phasers, etc when you're in there, because they'll be next.

    • @comporangegt
      @comporangegt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have had some go to the dealer under warranty but the majority of the water pumps we do in the shop are coming in around 80k plus. But you have to remember they have a ton of idle time which puts a significant wear on the engine.

  • @gjohns316
    @gjohns316 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This man does a fantastic job and he is a A+ mechanic I’m sure, but there’s a much easier way to do this. Instead of pulling the catalytic converter and messing with the sensor, you can drain the oil out through the drain plug and refill the unit through the vent hose, which is top side. What makes this a whole lot easier is putting the oil in a warm pan of water and warming the oil up before you pour it in. It does take about 30 minutes to drain the oil in but it’s a whole lot better than pulling out all those parts.

    "My" dealer refused to service my flex ptu, even after I explained how it could be done. So now a great independent garage gets all my service work. It wasn't as complex as that Explorer, and I would have paid an hour or so labor, but they are unable or unwilling to think outside the book. The dealership should sell this service as routine at the 35,000 MI Because by the time they reach 75,000 MI the unit is toast. And that goes for Lincoln's as well. Rich doesn't tell us how much it costs but even if it's 300 bucks it's worth doing. The dealership quotes a replacement parts and labor about $2,500. So if you keep the car for 100,000 miles you might have spend a thousand dollars keeping the unit in good shape. It's not a good design in the first place but there it is

Takes a while to fill though the vent, and I maybe a little off on topping it up but that's better than not doing regular changes every 30,000 miles. Hope everything works out for you as well.

    Hi, I just replaced the PTU on my 2016 Explorer Sport. It has the Police Interceptor PTU that comes with the external cooler which attaches to 2 coolant lines. Do you have any advice on how to get the coolant lines back into the cooler once the PTU is installed? I cannot seem to get them to seat back into the housing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

      I don’t believe they care once past 5/60… as long as they can service it during regular warranty. Can’t blame manufacturers because the DOT and towns use salt plus brine in such high concentration and drivers do not clean the undersides of their vehicles daily but they drive them daily . I work at a Highway dept out town trucks are miserable to work on by year number 5 , it’s all we do is work on rusty trucks and police cars pickups …

    Ford just screwed all techs with these 'newer' models. It's a nightmare working on them. Sup-par parts, very hard to access some of them (aside from lacking drain plugs, rear diff [the level screw has a hole in the subframe where you can loose the only T40 bit that can get in there and fill plug is almost inaccessible due to the subframe] and PTU on escapes for example), transmission on Cmax (which imploded at around 95k due to turkey made nsk bearings, it didn't care about doing maintenance at half the intervals required), rattling and timing problems like it's an Audi, filter in the back of the engine on Focus so you get crap everywhere... I would've gotten a chevy if they only had better white paint not flaking... Oh, wait, ford has that too to some extent.

      @procrastinatingnerd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@disabledofficer6360The PTU (Power Takeoff Unit) is on all wheel drive (AWD) vehicles, and it takes power to the rear wheels from the front, these are on primarily front wheel drive vehicles. like on cars and small suv's (like the escape). These usually use gear oil.
      The Transfer case is what transfer's power to the front wheels on primarily rear wheel drive vehicles when 4x4 is engaged like trucks and large suv's. These usually use trans fluid.
      On an escape you should have a PTU. It is still a case that transfer's power to the rear wheels on AWD vehicles so many people still refer to them as transfer cases, so they are probably refering to the PTU. It should have gear oil in it though not trans fluid.

    question for you because i unfortunately am one of fords customers w the 2016 Fusion 1.5 coolant leak issue @ 63k miles. Very frustrating situation but i want to thank you already for the information you have provided however i have some further questions. 1 being does the 2.0 use the same ECU if i wanted to throw in a 2.0 instead of the the blown 1.5 thats in it what would would be my biggest concerns? 2: how much does this cost to have the motor replaced at ford? How many labor hours is it to have your 1.5 swapped? Does ford just replace the lower block or do they swap the whole engine in my situation? I know from your last video about it you said it already has to be a 1.5 newer than june/july of 2019 i believe or it will just have the same gaps between the cylinders. Looking to either throw in a older 2.0 or just replace the motor from a 2019/2020 1.5
    My fusion has blown white smoke badly before i realized it will no longer hold coolant in it, car has been sitting in my driveway for over a year because ive just been unsure how to go about it.
