It's called a Killswitch. It cuts the signal and feed of the guitar. Also Buckethead plays with a CV.2 Pedal and several Push Buttons on the ground which help give him those distorted or outside the world type effects when playing. He also has an extremely long grasp and fingers which help him play some of those up top cords while utilizing the Killswitch and other equipment he plays with.
Also also his name is believed to be Brian Patrick Carroll. But it is fairly well known that Buckethead is very reclusive and is likely part of the reason for his stage persona. It offers him anonymity to alleviate what many believe is shyness up to and possibly including some sort of social anxiety. Its actually a brlliant way for him to share his music in a way that keeps it pure without any things you may or may not like about him personally distorting your opinion of the music. Either way we Bucket Heads respect his desire to remain out of the public eye and are so grateful for all of his stunning and one of a kind talent and wouldnt change anything so long as he continues to choose to share his genius.
I had no Idea he was that tall but makes sense based on your other comment. Also, that is interesting. Kind of a "coping mechanism" you could say to make him comfortable to perform. I've wondered that about some other artists who do similar things.
Jordan: Live at the Culture Room is usually the next progression with new fans. One of the greatest songs I’ve seen live. He recorded that song in 2006. Buckethead is, in my opinion, the GOAT. He’s a composer. He has not wasted a second of his gift. He’s done it his way, and it shows in every composition. He’s humble, a great kind person, and loves his family. He deserves far more recognition, but it’s not about that, and it’s rare. People don’t understand, judge without knowledge, and it’s why many don’t know how special he is to music culture. I’m amazed everyday...still.
He has a 28 minute long tribute to his mom, whom he was very close with called "Hold Me Forever". Its life changing. Excerpt from Revolver magazine on an interview they did with Ozzy back in 2005 about a band he was plotting to form. Revolver: Have you held any auditions? Ozzy Osbourne: "I tried out that Buckethead guy. I met with him and asked him to work with me but only if he got rid of the fucking bucket. So I came back a bit later and he's wearing this green fucking Martian's-hat thing. I said, 'Look, just be yourself!' He told me his name was Brian, so I said that's what I'd call him. He says, 'No one calls me Brian except my mother.' So I said, 'Pretend I'm your mum then!' I haven't even got out of the room and I'm already playing fucking mind games with the guy. What happens if one day he's gone and there's a note saying, 'I've been beamed up?' [Laughs] Don't get me wrong, he's a great player. He plays like a motherfucker!"
This is great reaction. I just found this guy few month ago and instantly become his fan. There are too many great songs and number of his album is ridiculous!
For real. Every version he does live of soothsayer sounds just a bit different. Bucket head is a musical genius with over 600 studio albums. Edit: 600 projects not albums songs included
Yep, Bucket has two red "arcade" style kill switches. His guitars are 1.25 larger than normal, due to his 6'6" stature and enormous finger stretch. Add awesome alternative picking and three-note--per-string scales (taught by Paul Gilbert in his teens), amazing vibrato, GOAT talent, awesome creativity, and you have Brian Carroll, or Buckethead. He can cover anything ever played, and a few things that haven't been (like the superfast player piano scrolls he thought were just Shawn Lane riffs). He's got 300 or so albums out, so you have a lot of catching up to do. Questions, ask. Otherwise, catch him on tour as COVID eases.
And yes it was custom. Buckethead is actually 6'6" so he has his les paul made to be about 20% larger so that it looks proportionally no different than if an avg sized player had it.
@@Guitarz4Lyf similar idea to tom morello and his “scratching”t. That’s done with pickups at full volume and completely off. Toggling the switch back and forth creates that “kill” effect... bucket does all that with the tap of a button.
@@Guitarz4Lyf Buckethead's guitars are custom made Gibson Les Paul Baritone guitars with the above mentioned arcade style cut-out buttons. The baritone guitar is almost as long as a bass and has a larger, heavier body. Due to Buckethead's physical size, the guitar doesn't look large. But, put it next to a standard Les Paul, and it's quite a bit bigger. Great video!
Also pretty please do more buckethead, well over 300 studio albums,he is basically an enigma. Well worth looking in to him,my fav musician on planet earth
He has his own custom guitar with the Kill Switch (actually 2). He has over 300 albums - more than Zappa for example. He plays all genres and he is free; free in the meaning of: he plays what he wants and he is so, so, so creative. And he is not a shredder: he makes his guitar speak, so that you really don't need words. After listening to more songs, you won't regret it and you will understand my words.
The effect is a kill switch. It's a custom Gibson with video game style buttons installed for kill switches. It's an oversize guitar also since he's 6'6"
When i saw buckethead live, he literally had to have help up and down the stairs to the stage, so he definitely can't see the best in that mask, which makes his playing that much more impressive
Brian Carroll is behind the mask. I saw him live at Sony Hall in New York City on April 15th, 2019. Awesome to watch up close. First, he's 6' 6" tall to start with. Then you add the KFC bucket and he always wear's a Michael Myers one piece jump suit, plus the mask and fake hair. When he played this about half way through the show, everybody went nuts!!! He has over 300 album's out. I think I have about 170 of his song's on my playlist. Keep going, you will not be disappointed!!
Buckethead plays every live performance differently. He's that creative. He's playing a Gibson with two kill-switches, and he's also playing three notes per string scales and extremely proficient alternative picking and awesome hammer-ons and pull-offs, He learned much of his shapes from Paul Gilbert. Buckethead is a GOAT in the guitar world. Obviously, his name is Brian Carrol.
Button is called a kill switch. He play a custom Lesson Paul by Gibson. It's bigger because he's 6'7. He's done over 300 solo albums not including collaborations. Played with guns and roses for a spell. Probably the most talented guitarist you will ever see. Live songs are never the same as studio version just better.. Hes around 50 years old. Never seen anything better!
If you are new to buckethead just check out live in bucketheadland album it’s basically greatest hits remastered. If you dig that, there are a few hundred more to dive into lol, the album is on youtube

Siege engine live is my favorite. We need to send a live recording of that track into deep space, and if higher intelligence still doesn’t reach out then we are alone
Just stopped by to hear the master. He sings with his guitar, plays rhythm and lead at the same time. How does he keep track of all those notes? I wonder that myself since this for him is a very short song. One from some three hundred plus albums.
it's for sure a custom gibson, has the kill switches, and it's just a bit bigger than a standard les paul but that's mostly just because buckethead is well over 6ft and a normal guitar looks like a toy when he's playing.
A special Gibson's they are extra large for bucket head studio edition they call them and they have 2 kill switchs on which are arcade buttons Bucket is 6' 4"
Please react to Buckethead - Pike 65 (hold me forever) which was dedicated to his mom. I'd say it's more emotional than soothsayer, still shreddy but you can feel A LOT of emotion in that song.
Welcome to Bucketheadland. Over 300 pikes (albums / Cd's) to this man's credit. What you just watched is but the entrance into the park. I implore you to dig into his music more.....as silly as it sounds, his music changed me.
How can you remember all those notes, you ask? It's known as phrasing. Basically if notes are letters, phrases are words. You can remember an entire song of many words, but not pay attention to the letters, because you know the words. And a lot of the phrases in this song are repeated over and over, just all over the guitar so they sound different, creating an extra illusion of mastery 🤪

The solo was pretty much completely improvised in this version
But it really sounds good, that's the reason why is one of the most beautiful versions of Soothsayer.
