If it looks right... This is a beautiful aircraft. Italy has been a force in design from the earliest deveopments in aviation. It is nice to see this heritage continues.
Stunning achievement! Beautiful, graceful and efficient design. Hats off to the design team. Airbus and Piaggio are giving us Americans a run for our money! Good job.
I saw one of these beauties flying over my house the other day! The plane has a very distinct sound unlike anything that I have ever heard from a small plane.
Holyshit i saw one of these the other day here in Sicily and i thought it was a Starship at first! Sooooo glad someone is making a sleek looking pusher config again!
I like the look and the thought behind the design of the Avanti 180. It has a futuristic look to it so I believe it is a step in the right direction. I hope to fly in one someday so feel what it is like to fly.
This is a beautiful airplane. Although similar, it really can't be compared to the Starship because the Piaggio has a more conventional tail. There are a few of them around my area, and knowing how the PT6/prop match sounds on other turboprop, this airplane has a very distinct sound not like the rest. Even flying overhead on approach/take off, the noise level is very mild, and very tolerable indeed. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for posting this video. This is a spectacular aircraft, with great performance, and it is still being produced, which is more than I can say for the Beechcraft Starship, which it superficially resembles. May they always grace our skies, and inspire other beautiful means of transportation.
Icing on airframe / props, prop vibration, lacks pure jet altitudes and higher price than entry level jets. Starship hit the same wall. But some great ideas with wing / engine position. Also helps prevent prop erosion with pusher design. Sandy areas of operation are corporate staple. Does relieve cabin noise levels and I guess the baggage goes in the rear fuselage, where the lav also shares space. 9000hrs turboprop time, wish I could have flown one to see differences. Best wishes and good luck!
I have owned three Ferraris. In the 20 years I have owned them, here is what I experienced. 2 water pump replaced due to leaks, replaced spark plug wires. One of these was a 1975 car that was 20 years old. I wish I had that kind of reliability in my toyota (which even the door handles broke off in my hand in normal use). I understand all the comments that this post can bring, but this has been my actual personal experience. In my opinon, considering the performance Ferrari is a quality product
I saw the plane before it was obtained by this Italian company...our FAA did not understand lightweight materials and so they were unhappy...it was amazing for me to see it at the Davenport, Iowa airport...glad to see it is being built again !
Indeed. The front surface allows compensation of the pitching moment of the main wing but with a positive lift, not a negative lift as usual configuration. This tri-surface layout is extremely efficient in cruise thanks to this.
Cool plane. Saw one flying out of Austin Texas today. I heard from inside my house, went outside and there it was - climbing out and easy to hear even though it was probably close to 4,000 feet already.
Well if you go by stereotypes yes, but if you leave them aside, you'll find out that the Japanese, the Germans, the British, the Koreans and even the US boys among many others others are capable of building stylish objects. Style is a matter of taste, there's a reason why some prefer driving a Maserati rather than a Ferrari.
I was saying: "Italians, when they construct something, then they do it with style." I did not say, that I think that Italians are the "only" one in the world who construct things with style. Has nothing to do with stereotypes, more with a nice comment about a Piaggio aircraft. ;-) Best regards
MisterRedBlueBlur i bought an italian espresso machine...real nice...big name..and broke as soon as the gaurantee expired and i havent fixed it since. just sits there as a bad ad for their product.
I think the test pilot was pulling your leg. :) The definition of Canard: In aeronautics, a canard (French for "duck") is a fixed-wing aircraft configuration in which a small horizontal surface, also named the canard or foreplane, is positioned forward of the main wing in contrast to the conventional position at the tail.
The tradeoff is that Avanti II lands fast and is not a short field aircraft, restricting the number of airports and conditions that you can arrive in. I have not flown the P.180 just yet, but I imagine it's a much more demanding aircraft as compared with a King Air.
This aircraft was recently involved in a well-publicized event in the US in which the pilot lost consciousness due to hypoxia. It hasn't yet been made clear whether there was a leak in the aircrafts seal system, no oxygen in the tanks, or perhaps carbon monoxide in the cabin. The air traffic controller, with help from another pilot, were able to awaken the pilot, ultimately, when he failed to respond to the tower. He reduced altitude immediately, and safely landed.
The shape and form reminds me of the ship that took off in the movie " Elysium" carrying the company Exec. that got shot down only it had the Bugatti Logo.
That's great and also answers why there's such little sweep for the wings for that cruise speed. Interesting prop blades choice: 5 of them but such thin airfoil.
Advanced, unique design. Speed, economy and style. Surprised about all the negative comments. Jaguar made a signature King Air, Baron and Bonanza. I like them all. But none of the Jag edition aircraft can you get in, take off and wave to most VLJs and even some mid-sized jets as you fly past them at 400KTAS at FL350. Ferrari (the car) made all of their magical power with about 3.5 liters of engine displacement. It's arguably the same concept. Bitches
I wish there was something like MS Flight (minus the greedy and unsupportive developers) where you can fly a bunch of this kind of passenger planes. I loved teh whole relaxing theme of that game
Yes, of course. It's the most efficient design because it's a canard. I'm surprised there's not more of them. If you think about it, the first successful flight was done with a canard style airplane. Introducing the Wright Brothers. This design is safer because the back (main) wing is stall proof because the front stabilizer wing will stall first, returning the nose to a more level pitch. Where else are you going to get 400mph at 19 gallons/hour? Oh, that's right ... there's the car! :)
Its always interesting to see how long lived airplane designs are, compared to the automotive industry. The design of the Avanti dates back about thirty five years, and the maiden flight of the prototype took place almost 28 years ago on September 26th, 1986. Its introduction to the market followed almost exactly four years later.
aircraft manufacturers do their best to design aircraft that provide a really solid platform for innovation and retrofits for a long time into the future. Getting a type certification, as is required for every airplane to be designed manufactured and sold, from the FAA is a nightmare and a very expensive process, look at cessna, the 172 platform dates back to the 50's. creating new airframes is not quite the same as a car company creating a new chassis.
I know that aircraft are designed with a long service life in mind but it still is fascinating how long this design managed to stay "fresh" for the lack of a better word. Even more than 30 years down the road the plane still looks futuristic.
Did I see this right, are the engines counter-rotating? Whatever the case is, I love this plane. For a turboprop, it's fast, and I'll bet it's easy to fly. Plus, it just looks good.
@52111centrumcz In fact, Avanti is superior in every way - it flies faster and further (also climbs faster, has higher ceiling etc.). Avanti II is even better. All that for less fuel. Impressive.
@iibw Founded by Rinaldo Piaggio in 1884, Piaggio initially produced locomotives and railway carriages. During World War I the company focused on producing aircraft.
"The Ferrari of the Sky"... a somewhat appropriate name, but I suppose "The Ultra-efficient Ferrari of the Sky" doesn't produce the same effect...*Sigh* Awesome plane, awesome video!
rnordquest The new EVO model has different shaped props that drop noise by 5dBA and coupled with reduced prop speed should change the noise signature significantly. Cannes was another airport looking to ban the plane.
Loud (think King Air) and beautiful on the outside, super quiet and beautiful on the inside. This plane is awesome. The upsides: beautiful, comfortable; large, quiet, luxury interior; very efficient compared to a jet (40% better), near jet-like speeds (400 kts), short takeoff and landing (3300 ft.), fully enclosed bathroom, 9 psi pressure differential for comfortable cabin at altitude The downsides: slower to climb (2,950 fpm) as compared to a jet, expensive ($7 million), complex maintenance
I often see a front finned, non-delta winned turboprop plane flying over Essex in southern England. Firstly I thought it might be some sort of drone but it seemed to large. I know its not new but this is the closest plane I can find that resembles it.
One of these lands at Manchester Airport regularly and you wouldn't believe how loud it is compared to the other private jets that fly in over my house on a daily basis

So it's got a canard and an elevator on the tail? Is there not enough authority from the canard design up front that it needs the T Tail? Interesting design, good looking aircraft.
Mr Alberto Galassi says thet P 180 burns 90 gallons at 400 knots with 7 passangers plus two pilots, but its very different from pilots review: some say 6 passanger plus two pilots at 390 knots burning 120 gallons, and some else reports 2.39 km/lit at 398 knots. Seems to me 90 gallons per hour is some far from reviews, for customers is always very dificult to chek fuel renditions.
,Always loved this design on jets .That short wings cuts the winds before hitting the bigger wings making the engine work smoothly not draft amazing design from the easy eighths Paggio been around but now they have inprove it more power more safety even with one engine that JET flys
While I can't recall the exact date, there's an easy-to-find video on TH-cam featuring a Piaggio Aero pilot who lost consciousness while flying in the states, and was brought back to a lucid state by an air traffic controller and another pilot who was alerted by the Aero pilot's slurred speech. If it was the latter, was the problem due to poor ground crew maintenance (failure to check the O2 levels before take-off), or was there an actual delivery issue within the flight system itself. Not that I'll every be able to afford one, but I've admired this aircraft and its configuration (similar to the earlier "Starship" planes), and would live to fly in one someday.

@52111centrumcz - im sorry, you said you "watched" them - have you actually flown either of them? Have you flown IN either of them? Just curious how you can come to that conclusion from watching a video?
For those of us who are pilots, and who know the stories behind the Starship as well as the 180, and who have flown them both, you can't compare the two aircraft from your arm chair. Until you've flown both, "you" really don't have any right to post comments about which aircraft is "better", because if "you" really knew what you were talking about, you wouldn't make such a vanilla comparison.
Small wing in the front mean it will stall before the main wing bringing the nose down and keeping the plane from stalling; much safer. Yes it look like a duck, but that is why that setup is named canard-wing, as it is French for duck. Many fighter jets are canard wing. Props in the rear (pusher-prop) means less turbulence over the surface of the plane thus less drag. Jets all put the thrust aft of the main wing. This design is not new; the Wright Brother used it in 1903.
1:24 "Piaggio is considered one of the oldest aircraft manufacturers in the world, it was formed in 1884." How can this be, the Wright brothers flew the first aircraft in 1903??
There are only 50 starship ever made even though it was the most popular and costliest project. Also 4 more companies made similar Canard aircrafts in the 80's which never made past the prototype.
@Bellecoline oh it´s much better than the King Air:) the piaggio has a bigger range, she´s quieter, needs less fuel because she´s able to fly higher and reach her target more faster than the king air:) sorry for my bad english^^ i´m german:)

Bellissimo
A Canard is also good because the front wings will pull the nose automatically up were it to go into a nose dive.
Just what the elevator in the back does for any other plane flying faster than trim speed.
So, how often did you drive them? For how many km?
Someone at the Toronto City Center (Billy Bishop now) has one of these....so loud and fast hahaha

This does have a jet. It's just turning a prop instead of using exhaust to push the plane.
@csabipirate looks like santas going bankrupt this winter for the next 20 years lol
@allijosue it the fastest propeller plane of all time though
1:24 "Piaggio is considered one of the oldest aircraft manufacturers in the world, it was formed in 1884."
How can this be, the Wright brothers flew the first aircraft in 1903??
There are currently 220 of these planes flying, not as many as mosquitos but better than nothing.
There are only 50 starship ever made even though it was the most popular and costliest project. Also 4 more companies made similar Canard aircrafts in the 80's which never made past the prototype.
Is that Felipe Massa before or after his accident?
@Bellecoline
oh it´s much better than the King Air:) the piaggio has a bigger range, she´s quieter, needs less fuel because she´s able to fly higher and reach her target more faster than the king air:)
