I usually think of classic as ending with cataclysm, but the changes started to compound earlier in wrath. The subject matter of the intro cinematics kind of shows this change: vanillas intro is just player characters all round the world crossing paths with each other; TBC starts and ends with illidan but the middle is player characters crossing paths again; wrath is entirely centered around Arthas, the cinematic is cool and feels deserved but the priority is different
People think the game became how it is magically out of thin air. It became the way it is in Retail because the people who were actually alive playing it back then got sick of everything taking 5,000 hours to do. That's why they added flying, that's why they made things more accessible, that's why we got LFD and LFR. Don't ask me why they killed 10 man raiding, that was actually a good feature, something about classes and buffs and composition and basically no one cares about any of that in a video game, we just wanna play and have fun, people have lost touch on all sides. You can tell you're talking to a psycho if you ask them about 10 man raiding and they claim it was bad somehow. Of course younger people who haven't wagered all their time yet think Classic is neat and swell. Give it time. There are very few things we never grow out of.
You are assuming Blizzard makes changes to this game because "the people want it" and not simply because the devs want it. It's a big assumption, you should demonstrate it.
That along with be open to potentially logging into pure chaos that newer to the game players might not understand. Barrens chat being Barrens chat, the occasional 100+ naked gnome runs on Orgrimmar, someone kiting a world boss to a hub city. One of my fondest memories was when my old guild's raid lead got it into his head that we were going to hold Stormwind hostage on our server. It was insane with a couple months of planning/strategizing, working out timetables with other guilds doing For The Horde runs as our cover, working out what to do when the GMs stepped in along with the inevitable randoms just coming in to join the crazy, having ventrilo channels to co-ordinate the raid teams and the spies we had in Alliance chat. We ended up holding the Trade District for around four hours before the GMs sent in the unkillable city guard. It was total dumb fun that I just couldn't see happening today because someone would have a hissy fit demanding bans.
I have to disagree about Mists of Pandaria. I can name more memorable trinkets and weapons from Seige of Orgrimmar and Throne of Thunder than any version of the game.
I know its hard to believe, but cataclysm is now 14 years old. like cataclysm is as old as i was when i started playing wow. Frankly if its not live retail its classic WoW.
I dont play WoW but I always assumed that classic was just going to be that. The original day one version of Wow. No other expansions or updates. How theyre going about it now is kind of a conundrum because what happens when they catch up to current content? Will they start all over again and revert to classic?
That's kind of what they do with other MMOs. They typically call them progression servers, but basically they restart the game from a certain point, then the game progresses through the natural cycle of expansions until it meets current meta stuff. I know at least everquest does that, but I'm not sure the details. I don't know if blizzard would commit to that though. They might have to just spin wow off as a separate company to allow that to happen.
I despise when people use Worgen as an example of art direction. You're comparing an NPC to a PC, and that looks the same even if you compare Vanilla scourge to Forsaken.
i truly hate the more handheld aspect of later ekspansions, its to easy now, us old players who remember classic, love the hardcore aspect of it, tried multible times starting a new char in retail but holy f... its SO boring and easy mode i stop caring about anything in the lore..
For me Classic ends with WOTLK. Things that don't belong in Classic: wow token, in-game shop items, accelerated leveling, scripted new player experience, LFG/DGF, transmogrification, "woke" artstyle. I do agree SoD is somewhat true to Classic in this regard allthough due to the extra (op) runes the world has become less dangerous.
I will answer your 13 min vid and like 5 hours of recording and editing down to a simple question. Are "Vanilla" or Classic players playing blizzards 'classic' cata or are they are on a private server?, Playing SoD ? I can tell you right now that the real classic players are NOT playing cata.. maybe those that didn't finish all raids but the OG's are playing on P servers again.
Blizz has been trying to get people into retail again with SoD. They dont want us playing classic. Thats why they are re-releasing cata and other garbage xpacs. SoD was becoming modern WoW in less than 3 phases. Hence why 70% of the players left. This is why P servers have been popping up like hotcakes again. Players are tired of Modern trash.
They dont understand the spirit of vanilla. They dont understand for what we burn for. They have no clue about the game the company created what they did buy from them.
Classic for me is from Vanilla to Wrath, when the game was at its peak and had everything going for it, past Wrath and going into Cata and on is just not it, people then realized it and quit and people now will probably realize it and quit.

Classic WoW is another lost opportunity Blizzard had to actually go back and rethink the timeless design of their great game, make it even better, actually use the experience and resources they've gathered over the years, try to find middle ground between living breathing world and an instanced ARPG modern wow is. However, their management decided to forego that opportunity and do an easy cash grab instead. Obviously, it's way easier to just repeat all the mistakes all over again, way less developer time required, and the crowd doesn't know what's best for them anyway. Corps don't care what's best for you, they just want your money. Corps spit on your childhood. Take it personally for once.

Classic is NOT vanilla, classic is basically another word for RERELEASED, hence it works for TBC, Wrath, Cata etc. We had The Burning Crusade Rereleased, we gonna get Mist of Pandaria Rereleased and eventually maybe even Dragonflight Rereleased, classic has nothing to do with the old games or vanilla or any time period

Now they're just stuck with the same problem that led to classic WoW in the first place - players want to play in the original vanilla world with no expansions, so they create private servers for that. With the Classic WoW servers being upgraded to Cata and next MoP, they're just going to start creating private servers again.
you can still play classic vanilla, in the launcher you can choose between cata or vanilla, and i recently got into wow again and been playing classic, theres SOOO many people in stormwind and the other big cities, so theres def a craving for vanilla

It's like people never heard of progression re-release servers with other MMOs before WoW. The concept of Classic in an MMO isn't that new.

Even ffxi has a 'classic' hankering. Retail is still alive, but there is a burgeoning classic scene of private servers.
