I’m amazed at your ability to go straight in with pen, especially plain air, AND while traveling! 🤯 Great tips! I’ve never heard of the stabilo point 88 pens.
11:11 I always take my water brushes filled up on the plain with me and have never had an issue. As long as it is not over 100 ml and you are not taking more than 1 kg of liquid total, there is no issue
Great info and very lovely sketches! Just got back from 3 weeks in Turkey, Greece, Italy and my first try at travel sketching. I took very small materials/kit (1/4 pans!) which worked fine. Glad I brought extra paint pans cuz I ran out of a few colors. You are right. We were on a group tour with a tight strenuous schedule and pen sketches (and watercolor later if no time) was the quickest. Sometimes I only had seconds! Tried to catch just a tiny scene or detail in that case. I took photos to know the colors and often painted my sketches on the buses/planes/boats. I filled a whole little book! I rationed the pages per day. Next time a little bigger book for more room. Would have liked to do more pasting in and note taking. I was never bored and enjoyed every minute! I even caught some moods and moments that I like! Thanks for the tips.
Great practical tips!! Thank you! In the past I hardly ever sketched on holiday because I feel pressured when other people are waiting, but last year I went away on my own and sketched every day. I loved it! I was only a one hour drive from home but it was lovely. I made my own sketchbook (a square one) with mixed media paper. I didn’t really know what I was doing but I ended up with basically an illustrated journal. I left a few blank pages which I filled in after I came home. I also drew maps of my walks and even included some photos. It had a bit of everything but it captures the memories so much better than just photos!
very informative video and exactly the info I was looking for, thanks Liz. I have a big trip this year, with kids, and I need my kit to be light and easy to get out and put away. This was great.
Ooh, you will have fun! Lots of sketching opportunities. I met up with sketchers in Adelaide and Sydney, so if you want to meet local artists it might be worth getting onto the urban sketchers where you are visiting??@@AdamSingle
Love your sketches! ❤ I would add a little foldable foam for seating in hard or cold/hot/wet surfaces… I always forget it and it does make siting sketching for a long period more comfortable.
Just found your channel. As a very new person to watercolour, I love your no nonsense approach and simple straighforward techniques and tips. Cant wait for my next trip and plan on taking a travel kit.
I have taken a similar art kit and A5 watercolour book on a couple of overseas holidays recently, but I rarely found the time to sketch while on the move. Your video has encouraged me to do more holiday sketches on my next trip (Turkey and Greece), and I’ll make sure to set time aside just for sketching. I really enjoyed this video - thank you. 🤓🇦🇺
Great tips Liz! I'm going to Japan very soon and will be my first time sketching so i'm quite excited! Thanks too for the reminder of my journal my rules! I was watching lots of people doing their sketches from start to finish on location, but I didn't wanna drag those with me to wait for me to finish my sketch! So I was thinking of doing really quick, less than 10-minute sketches on location and then finishing it all up with color when we're back at the hotel or if there's a long wait somewhere :)
I have a very old Windsor and Newton travel watercolour kit with half pans, a small brush, mixing palettes and a small bottle for water. It all folds together really neatly into a small box and is really handy. I used up the paints years ago but refilled the pans from tubes. If I didn’t have that I would definitely be using your great idea with the mini ice cube tray. Thanks Liz.
Thanks for this. My stylistic preference is for an A4 sketchbook as I can always use a half page and the versatile Pentel pocket brush. Can I recommend taking a quick photo of your subject before you begin? Maybe I'm slower/more disaster prone than most but that record has allowed me to finish stuff later despite adverse weather/unwanted company or obscuring or removal of the subject. ( The most memorable was having a picturesque dead tree felled mid sketch! )
That’s such a good idea. I do it and forgot to include. I think lorry drivers are specifically trained to park in front of artists, but never had a dead tree incident 😂
@@nikkiwells1688 not really. I have such limited colours with me I just improvise. I bought Aussie Red Gold from Daniel Smith especially for the trip and didn’t use it!
We plan to mill around in Sydney a bit, then go bush. My husband is Australian Aboriginal, and he needs to get his feet in some red dirt. 😊 We’ve borrowed a camping rig from a friend of his, and don’t have many plans at all! I do hope we make it out to Broken Hill to see the art. 🤩
Such a lovely and helpful video. I’m going to be brave and start a sketch book this summer. Just to take out and about on my walks initially. I’m a beginner artist, so I’m hoping this will build my confidence and also get me away from following step by step tutorials all the time.
Lovely inspiring sketches and great advice, thank you 😊 I learnt about Twisbi pens from your channel, I had never heard of them and will add them to my wish list That’s a nice Kraft paper sketchbook -
Hi Liz, I’m heading to Japan in a few days and I made your concertina journal. I’m so looking forward to sketching my experience over there. Thanks for all the great tips!
Hi liz, really great video, very helpful too.. it’s always difficult knowing which sketchbook to take on holiday.. I love your sketches and your style.. 😊 so glad I found your channel the other day 😊
I have a laptop/messenger bag which was from ikea. cheap with loads of pockets. Also lightly padded to protect stuff, but any cross body bag is easier to rummage in than a rucksack and more secure from a pickpocket.
Thank you for your concern 😊 I realised it was visible and thought about removing it, but my email is already on my TH-cam page for anyone to contact me and my phone number is readily available because of my art business, so that ship has sailed and I decided it was a risk I would take.
Thanks for the advice Liz. Lovely work.
Glad it was helpful!

The issue is when you forget you have them and don't put them in the bag to declare. It shows the machines work!!
This is such a fantastic list! Thank you for keeping it real and you've got some heckin' amaaaazing artwork! Appreciate the sharing!!
Thank you so much!

Welcome! There are quite a few films on the channel now, so please dive in!
