So glad to have found this! I tried it today, and it worked! Until I opened my doors to put the groceries in and it shut off. When I unlocked with the fob it shut off. I went through the process again, and then used the door sensor to unlock the car...and it still shut off. This seems to defeat the purpose of cooling the car down if it shuts off the moment I open it (plus that doesn't seem good for the engine to turn on and off and then back on when it's time to go). What am I doing wrong that the engine shuts off when I unlock the car? Thank you!
Unfortunately I think that is just subaru cars. We purchased the extra fob to remote start our car and even with that, when you open the door the car shuts off.

How new does the car have to be for this to work? I’m getting a 2019 with push start and would be interested to see if this remote start trick works 😋😁
If your vehicle you're interested in has Push Start Only - Then you would 1) Pay for StarLink and use the App to Remote Start your 2019 Forester, OR Purchase the Remote Start Module and use the included Remote Start FOB, or use your KeyLess entry FOB. If you keep your vehicle for a long time the Remote Start Module for me is the better option. The Remote Start FOB has a longer range, and the KeyLess FOB is handy to remote start without taking along the Remote Start FOB.
Just got my 2024 Forester Limited, RES works thru my cell phone via the MySubaru app if I'm in an area with cell coverage, but where I live there is no cell service coverage. Looking for a trick myself. As I understand it, if I want RES bad enough, I'll have to buy the RES module have it installed and paired to the car then it works with a separate remote.
does the other fob, not the starter one, beep as well to know it started and can you shut off with the regular fob too and again get audible confirmation?
So, my car didn’t come with remote start, but if I get and pay for Starlink, then I can get the My Subaru app which will give me remote start? Is that correct or am I misinformed.
Two versions of remote start... in order to get this feature to work you would have to either have the remote start previously installed or install the accessory from a Subaru Dealer... the other option is to pay the subscription to Starlink, both have there pros and cons!

Kyle, your title, 'Subaru Hidden Remote Start Feature', using the word hidden is Click Bait and a lie since the feature is listed and described in the User Manual, and also mentioned in the Remote Start Module paperwork you get when you have it installed by the dealer OR included when ordered with it installed. * IMPORTANT: I'm just amazed that the use of the KeyLess Entry FOB is actually unknown or not well known by Subaru employees. I asked the NY dealer, then called the CT dealer and also a NJ dealer. Each asked their staff but none knew about the feature and how to operate it. I had to read the manual, and find the paperwork included with the Remote Start Module that they handed me after it's installed. This was in January 2021 when we purchased the 2021 Forester Premium with it installed by the dealer.
Yes, it's hidden when you are told at the dealership that the main fob will not start the car. Until we saw the instructions left in the glove box after the remote was installed. They are kind of clueless.

Can these remote start relays be purchased and installed by the owner or do you need access to dealer level diagnostic tools to reprogram the car computer?

1 - How can I program the key fob not the start fob to start the engine ? 2 - Is ac start automatically if you keep it on ? 3 - Can you roll windows up / down by key fob ? Thank you
1. If you have the remote start accessory, you should already be able to start the vehicle from the key itself. 2. I believe the climate control will automatically either heat or cool the vehicle due to external temp and what the vehicle system is set to. 3. To my knowledge, no. Right now the market is so crazy that there is no such thing as a discount. But in a normal market, you're more likely to get a better deal if you choose to finance through Subaru. This is because they can make money on the loan too. Cash discounts are a myth.

The app will work if you have the starlink safety and security. The remote will only work if you have the remote start module installed as an accessory as the vehicle didn't come from factory with the receiver. It is part of the additional accessory that is optional! Hope that helps clarify!

Subaru turns all off all engines once you opne a door thats been remotely started. They claim it's a safety feature.
@@aleshiaphillips2129 You are right! I love my Subie, but this is a really dumb design. When it's 115F (or higher) outside (I live in the desert), I want to get in a cool car--especially when my 81-year old mom is with me because I have to take extra time to put her walker in the car which means any tiny smidgen of cool air after the shut off escapes out the hatch while loading the walker. In the meantime, she's sitting in a dangerously hot car. I didn't think the car could be put into gear if the fob isn't inside the car, so it can't be stolen? What's the concern on SOA's part? This just doesn't make any sense. Plus, all the stopping and starting can't be good for the engine, can it? So weird!
Toyotas also turn off if you remote start and then open the doors.
@@tqless Gaaaaa! Why do they DO that? It completely defeats the point of the remote start, and just can't be good for the engine. If the car can't be put into gear unless the fob is inside the car and someone is sitting on the seat, I fail to see the problem. The a/c escapes so quickly when it's 115F. *sigh* That said, it's good to know Subaru isn't the only daft manufacturer--thanks for sharing. lol
i have a 24 crosstrek limited and can only remote start with the app. will this work for me too as long as i have the subscription??
I have 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Limited with push button start but remote start doesn't work. Any help?
Was remote start an option you got when you purchased the car? If not, you don't have the option.
If the car has the my subaru smartphone remote start, can the key fob be programmed to start the car as well?
@@SonnyHung mine has remote start and I got the app. But it doesn’t have remote start…so yeah. Must be an American thing 🤷♂️
How do I do that with the 2024 Forrester? I follow your procedure and it doesn’t work. Thank you.
@@hnd2893 true I was told about$800 for the module
Wow.. I didnt know that.. Nice info! Thanks so much!
Would this apply to every Subaru or just the ones equipped with remote start??
Equipped with Remote Start because part of that installation is adding the receiving end that goes into the vehicle.
does the other fob, not the starter one, beep as well to know it started and can you shut off with the regular fob too and again get audible confirmation?
So, my car didn’t come with remote start, but if I get and pay for Starlink, then I can get the My Subaru app which will give me remote start? Is that correct or am I misinformed.
Two versions of remote start... in order to get this feature to work you would have to either have the remote start previously installed or install the accessory from a Subaru Dealer... the other option is to pay the subscription to Starlink, both have there pros and cons!
Works sometimes for me. Whats the allowed distance for starting it up?
Technically it should up to 400 feet away.
I just bought used 2020 forester privately and I only have the original pust to start fob and my auto start is not working. Any suggestions? the car only had 13,000 miles.
Is the car equipped with the control unit and wiring that is necessary for the factory key fob to be paired with the car's remote start circuit.
@@carlmeyer6840 Hi I bought the car with a R title it only came with the original fob no remote fob. How can I tell if it was ever equipt with the remote start originally as a 2020 forester?
Thanks very good video for all the confusion surrounding this Subrau oddity of NOT providing remote start built in as practically every other manufacture where any upgraded trim packages INCLUDE this common convenience since 2013! We have a 2021 Touring, highest trim package available and still no remote start. Only Subrau quietly requires another $500 to make it work??
Use Subaru’s Stupid-link instead? Why pay for a subscription ($149.00/yr) that only works when there is a wireless internet connection?? Pathetic for a vehicle this expensive!
Absolutely Agree . . . Gamed then Scammed Again.
💯💯 I regret my subaru purchase and its primary because of this fact.
You can not do this on a system that has the standard keyless fob with out purchasing the remote option? I do have the start from the app feature.
Calm down Sonny- he’s nice enough to make a video that’s easy to follow and pleasant to watch - don’t be so critical. Btw spelling error in your post- hope no one is so critical of you too
@@chrisasselin5244, hm the title of this video is click bait - it's a fact because it's being used to to draw in viewers. Why don't we let Kyle respond to that directly so we hear from the horses mouth. I'm not being critical just calling it straight about what I see as this is a normal practice in the TH-cam world because it entices viewers to check out the video. I don't see a problem if he chooses to do that but don't be naive and try to white wash my accurate statement about the title. Eh, yeah I'm not a bad robot with typos but an actual person who corrects my mistakes if it's pointed out to me or if I happen to catch it as I'm writing it. Yeah, he does a good Jon and is easy to follow in his video.
I just bought a 2022 Impreza Sport Manual, I haven't tried this because I assume it wont work because its manual.
You need a Subaru model with both keyless entry fob and the installation of the Subaru remote start engine module (receiver) for this to work. The transmitting range of the keyless entry fob is about 75 ft. as opposed to the 250 ft. of the dedicated remote start fob (thanks, @tommymas1) Hope this answers some FAQs.
Does the remote start without subscription? How to install this receiver?
I lost my remote fob. so im trying to learn how to start with regular key. I have a 2014 Outback and this technique doesn't work. Neither does the lock 4 times technique. Don't know what I'm doing wrong.
I have a 2020 Forester and this does NOT work.
I do have the app on my phone that will let me start and run it.
It is a push button start setup.
The procedure is simple, can't imagine why it is not working.
Please advise.
There's a timer on my subaru start only stays running for like 10 minutes is there a way to take the timer off ?
No. If you can't get into your car in 10 minutes after remote starting, then you have a problem. You can always restart it. But why the idling for more than 10 minutes? 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Just tried it on 2017 Subaru Outback with my key fob on and it does not work. Any ideas?
Can these remote start relays be purchased and installed by the owner or do you need access to dealer level diagnostic tools to reprogram the car computer?
I purchased the remote start kit from a Subaru dealer and installed it myself in less than an hour. Took it back to dealer to have is programmed. Works fine.
I bought a 2022 Subaru Outback limited. Does this feature come standard with key fob? I tried your way of starting the engine but didn’t work.
You would have to get the remote start accessory installed for it to work!
@kyleboline Does this hold true for 2023 models. I have a ‘23 Outback limited and am weighing the Starlink vs. remote fob options. Thanks!
Go with the Fob. $150/year feels like a lot when remote start is about the only useful feature to StarLink, unless you get in accidents often
Will this work on my subaru crosstrek 2021?
I have a 21 Outback and 22 Forester. Both vehicles have push-button start.
This method does not work on my vehicles. Neither car was purchased with the "fob Remote Start Package".
That's why it's NOT working.
do both offer same range?
1 - How can I program the key fob not the start fob to start the engine ?
2 - Is ac start automatically if you keep it on ?
3 - Can you roll windows up / down by key fob ?
Thank you
1. If you have the remote start accessory, you should already be able to start the vehicle from the key itself.
2. I believe the climate control will automatically either heat or cool the vehicle due to external temp and what the vehicle system is set to.
3. To my knowledge, no.
Hope that helped and thanks for the comments!
@@KyleBoline helpful and will come
Does pressing for 3 seconds work on 2012 outback??
How can I disable all the sensors on my XV, PLEASE? When it rains, the car beeps incessantly!
Does the remote start FOB come standard on any of the models, or just the APP? I'm not allowed to have my phone inside the building at my place of employment so the APP isn't terribly useful for me.
You would still have to have the remote start accessory installed to have the fob. I don't believe it is standard on any trim!
@@KyleBoline, that's my understanding as well. For the price of these vehicles, it's a shame it isn't standard. Fortunately, I figured out I can use the MySubaru website from PC and start my vehicle that way, so the remote start accessory isn't necessary.
I have a 2016 Forester with remote start installed, this did not work for me. I would love to not have to carry the extra fob around...an option on this car?
If you are local to Boise, stop down at LHM Subaru and let me see, I don't have one specific on the lot with remote start installed otherwise I would try it. I can keep researching for you!
This only works some of the time for me on the fob with the Subaru button. I don't know why. I follow the instructions it just doesn't work. I don't know if its a line of sight issue or what. . . . the remote start fob works every time.
Try replacing the battery in your fob.
How do you turn off the horn when you remote start the forester? My neighbors hate me at 5am
I don't believe there is a setting to do so. You can the chirps but not the horn. You would have to modify your vehicle with a switch set up.
I have a 2022 Outback Limited. Does anyone know if the remote start still shuts off when the car door is opened, on newer models? I'm trying to decide between Subaru remote start, or aftermarket. I don't want to use Starlink. They keep raising the price ($150/yr), and I don't always have ATT service.
That helped immensely but when I open the door it shuts off, you have a fix for that? Thank you.
It is annoying to have to start the car twice. Still looking for a workaround for that also.
I just purchased a 2021 Impreza Premium with the push-button-start. Does anybody have a link to this OEM remote start receiver package. My dealer didn't know about it apparently.
Is there a difference like 25 ft and 100 yards?
200-250 for the separate fob. 75 feet for the main fob.
Great channel; how much does Subaru would take in cash for me to drive off the lot with a wrx?
I appreciate the feedback! Really depends on the trim level and what is available though cash out the door on a base typically would be around $31k roughly!
@@KyleBoline so $4k discount if paid in cash?
No, that doesn't exist. Depending on the dealership you go to they will either be at MSRP (like the one I work at) or some dealers have been marking up at $2k-$4k over.
Right now the market is so crazy that there is no such thing as a discount. But in a normal market, you're more likely to get a better deal if you choose to finance through Subaru. This is because they can make money on the loan too.
Cash discounts are a myth.
Thanks for the information!
Does it work with 2020 subaru ascent?
To my knowledge it should!
Kyle, my primary key fob was stolen, including my remote start. How do I reprogram my spare and remote start? I'm really not trying to spend upwards to 500$ at the dealership. Thank you 🙏🏾
Does not work on 2021 limited Crosstrek still have to use the app to remote start. I tried it a few times on my Crosstrek.
Good info. My 2018 Legacy 2.5i Premium didn’t come with remote or push button start and I’m one of those who work in a secure location so no cell phones. As I type the dealer is installing the remote start accessory. Looking forward to it.
I had my car repaired and the somehow messed up my remote start. It used to work off of the main fob before it was repaired. Any advice on how to recalibrate it? Thanks 😊
My guess is that a Subaru dealership may have to pair the fob to the system again? If I find anything out I can let you know!
Hi i'm Edwin Martinez live in Boston massachusetts how much is the cost for 2009 Subaru Forester remostat
There are multiple forms of Remote Start out there in the aftermarket realm. Subaru didn't make a Remote Start accessory until 2010 I believe. I really like the Viper Remote Start applications and you would have an audio/ lighting company install it. Link to the company who makes Viper Products: www.viper.com/car/remotestart/
Hope that helps!
I purchased 2018 Subaru and had no idea I could start car with key. Made appointment at dealer where I purchased car and they said nothing to me about the fact I didn’t need it, already have it. Being a senior I would have expected better customer service than this. I would like to know why I was not informed of this. Not a happy customer.
I just purchased a 2024 forester wilderness and the hack mentioned in this video doesn’t work on it.
this did not work for me. I have a 2022 ascent and nothing happens when I use the key fob, the app does work for remote start though
The app will work if you have the starlink safety and security. The remote will only work if you have the remote start module installed as an accessory as the vehicle didn't come from factory with the receiver. It is part of the additional accessory that is optional! Hope that helps clarify!
@@KyleBoline can you use both of these interchangeably? Or is it one or the other
Is that happen on the sti too?
I tried this on my 2019 Forester sport and my 2021 Crosstrek limited. Did not work for either. Both cars auto start using the phone app.
On either of those cars, had you paid for the remote start accessory from Subaru? You have to have that for this to work as that accessory includes the receiver that gets wired into the car.
Does that work on 2019 3.6r as well?
Yes if you have the remote start accessory installed as it needs the receiver.
I have a 2018 Subaru Legacy sport and I can’t get my key fob to do remote start
Do you have the remote start accessory installed? If not their is no receiver for it to take the signal.
@@KyleBoline no I do not
Great tip. Dose this work on 2017 Outback that has keyless entry feature?
Yes it does! You do however have to have the remote start accessory from Subaru installed.
@@KyleBoline what about a 2019 Forester?

How do you unlock the car after using this feature
I tried, I click two times on the lock button then the third time I hold on for three seconds. I don't know if I am doing it correctly?
Sam, do you have the remote start accessory installed in your Forester? It will only work with that as the accessory includes the extra remotes and the receiver to receive the signal.

Unfortunately no.
Does this work 2023
I just tried it on my 2022 Forester Touring and it did not work.
Do you have the Remote Start Accessory installed?
My 2019 Impreza doesn’t do this :( maybe it’s just an American thing? I’m in Australia
I can start my 21 crosstrek from my phone.. but not the key fob...why ?
Two separate systems... the phone remote start works with connecting to the car off of cell connection and the Starlink Subscription. The Remote start off of the physical fob is an accessory you can purchase from a Subaru Retailer that includes the extra fobs and receiver to allow for the main key fob to do this function. Hope that helps!
