I have an all stock 2000 Civic Si. Maybe I'll do a walkaround after I'm done getting all the dents fixed and getting a fresh coat of Electron Blue Pearl... It's in the body shop right now.
sniper1334 Yeah, I picked it up a few days ago. One owner, 123k miles. I've already put about 400 miles on it. My plans are to restore it to factory spec (just needs paint, body work, and some new oem floormats) and then I am going to do some minor modifications that are easily reversible. It's the closest I can get to starting with a brand new Civic. I am a kid (19), but I have an appreciation for the car that most people do not, and I work hard for the things I own as well, so they get taken care of.
***** You know what? I thought it would be rare to find a stock one, but they seem to be popping up left and right where I'm at. If you're on facebook look for the group EM1 Crew and join. Ask some questions there. Also, just keep an eye out.
Great video.i am a V8 guy. But have a soft spot for 2000 civic si vtec.my uncle brought one new black put custom 18 rims tires loud exhaust lowered it with coil overs spring and custom intake loved riding shot gun windows down sunroof open bumping dj screw
I have a 98 hatch DX and love it. I drove a 2010 civic and couldn't care less for them. New hondas have in my opinion become "soul less". my dx may not be hella fast, for for a single cam non vtec, but it is a fun and reliable car. Even if I had a another car I'd still hold on to it:)
I just bought a 99 civic as a beater, my other car is 2013 sonic its got electronic steering, digital everything, touch screen. Then I get into the 99 civic the I can feel what the wheels are doing and it gives me the whole 90s feel. Its slow as hell but I love driving it because it brings back memories of the way cars used to be.
Numbers speak better for the new Si, but it's not as fun to drive. The electronic power steering is totally numb, the drive by wire is also numb and sometimes slow to react. Even my 2009 Si feels numb in the same way. The 90s and early 2000s were the best time for Honda.
It's no big difference, the new Si may have way more HP and torque, but it is about a half-second quicker than the EM1 which is not enough for more HP and torque but it is because of the heavier curb weight over the EM1 and all the technology options that the old one lacked that made no big difference but then the old Si is meant for the pure sport car experience where all that tech did not matter, drop the new Si's K-series engine into the EM1 without mods and race against the new Si stock, then the EM1 will whip the new Si and the EM1 is better and more fun to drive than any newer Si, the EP3 Si was good too, but they should've just used the K20A2 motor from the RSX-S instead of the slower, low compression K20A3 motor from the base RSX, if they couldn't make a USDM Type R, the least they could've done is put the USDM K20A2 motor in the EP3, it would already had some competition with the old GTI's that spanked out the EP3 at that time and other sporty compact cars.
I totally agree when he said it's not raw as the 2000 civic, older vehicles were just for driving, not all those electronic gizmo. Well I'm proud of owning a 88 civic lx, handles way better than new cars today, in my opinion
this is the best Si review on the internet. well put. (97 dx sedan CTR LCA+RB F+R EM1 Brakes F+R NOT Lowered!) handles amazing drivability is awesome. wish they made a SI sedan in the ek version too. Pure Joy.
Even though newer cars are getting faster, they're boring as heck. I own a 2012 Honda Civic LX and I believe it's just as fast as the Civic Si was in 1999-2000. I owned a 1999 Honda Civic Si back in the day. I miss that little car. It was fun to drive, and although it wasn't super fast, it felt faster than my current Civic. I traded it for a S2000 that I owned for a total of 6-months, haha. Of course, that car was incredible, but I ended up having to get rid of it because the insurance on it was too expensive for me at the time. I traded it for a Honda Fit that was still fun to drive, at least on curvy roads, it did really good in the corners, but didn't have a lot of power, especially with passengers. I owned the Fit the longest, almost 8 years. I am very much a Honda person, but I really think they need to dial back the comfort just a little bit to make their "sports" cars more sporty and go back to their roots. First things first, bring back the S2000!
You just prefer the 'american' style of power delivery. Nothing wrong with it, but you can't appreciate the EM1 civic if all you care about is power delivery at 3K RPM. Like the guy stated above, it was about you taking the care to its full limit and working to create the power. If all you did is shift at 5K and get pissed off, then the car would obviously be slow.
very rarely do newer cars outbreak the earlier models.. weird but iv seen so many reviews and this is one fact that constantly stands out to me. supercars included.
Its really hard to find a good condition 99 00 civic si here in california I see a lot of decent condition ones on autotrader but they're all on east coast so all you east coast people are lucky haha the ones here are all jizzed on and raced to hell.
There are actually a lot of really nice ones down here, all you have to do when you live on the east coast is undercoat your car before it does become a rust bucket. This will cost $100 every ohhh two or three years. If its a special car do it every year
The only Si I kind of like other than the 1999-00 version is the 2006-08 Si Coupe and I like the 2007-08 Si Sedan even more than the coupe. It's mainly the wheels and the front end I like better on the 06-08 cars. I don't like the wheels of the 2009 and up and I don't care for the front end either. The fog lights are nice, that's about it. Just my opinion.
***** Even with the 600+lb weight difference there is still no way that makes up for the 100hp gap the mustang gt has over you, plus the fact that the 300lb of torque moves the mustang shell quiet easily. At best these year si's would be able to handle a 5spd 2000 v6 mustang which was a complete pos in stock form.
Even the 4.slow mustang gave the 8th gen civic a good run (friends had 4.0 mustang vs 2008 si and both were even until 80ish then the civic pulled a nose for the win ), I had compared the 3.8 mustang vs same year si and if both stock then its a drivers race with civic having a slight edge, same between 05-10 mustang v6 and si's, NOW the current mustang v6 would destroy almost anything honda has in stock form. The mustang gt from 99 and up would beat any current stock civic, so i don't know how salemned is saying that a stock 2000 si would beat a 99-04 GT when it's clearly slower than the current civic si
@TheJdecka My mistake, I thought you were comparing the the previous 06-11 (8th gen) Si to the new 2012 (9th gen) Si. A lot of people liked the 8th gen Si because it was very similar to the 99-00 Si in a lot of ways. The changes that Honda made from the 8th gen to 9th gen Si are why many people are displeased/disappointed in the new Si.
This is Honda Civic SIR in canada if i'm not mistaken, because this honda is DOHC b16 vtec, which in canada, Honda civic si 2000 is Sohc Vtec. Correct me if i'm wrong.
@ehcivicracer You stated some very valid points here, and I have no clue whether you've ever driven a 99-00 civic coupe (Si or Ex), but I on the other hand have driven both, and have driven an 8th gen multiple times. Sure the 6th gens were less powerful, they also weighed less and were still considered a subcompact. One thing in particular I really love about all 92-00 civic is they're double wishbone suspension which gives the 2000 and older civics the sporty drive feel they have.
Was the strip conditions horrible? Those times sound pretty bad. I was doing 15.7 @89mph in a bone stock 99SI many many moons ago at strip at Milan Michigan. The old Si was a great Autocross car. Very nimble, predictable, feedback, and responded amazingly well to suspension mods. 350lbs front and 400lbs rear spring rates, a 22mm sway and tie, with Falken Azenis tires and I was pulling 1.01g's on a Gtech Accelerometer. Not sure how reliable those Meters are though. give or take so...
There's 4 99-00 civic si's with original paint. 2 with stock rims. 3 of em are blue. 1 red. While 3 of em aren't stock they're tastefully done. Not riced or slammed. Lowered a little for smoother ride and some engine upgrades.
I have a flawless electron blue 2000 Si coupe. In my opinion, the 99-00' si coupe owns that color. I bought it new and it has never been damaged in any way. There is 103,000 miles on the odometer and she still runs and looks like the day I bought her. Great little car. I will never sell her. Hope this doesn't sound like bragging, I was just trying to point out that there are good examples of this car out there.
Wow thank you for this! No doubt in my mind I'm getting an 99-00 si. My first car was a 96 civic dx hatchback and it was a great car. I've owned a 88 325is and 92 vw 16v GTI.
92 vw 16v gti's are bad ass,my cousin owned one with ported and polished head, big 50mm intake manifold, nice big cams, chipped, and exhaust, that thing boogied all the way up to 8,000rpm and I beat 04 gli jettas with k04 turbo upgrade
After my moms wreck which ended with a destroyed Hyundai Tiburon, I was informed by a close friend (who worked at a Honda dealership) that a stock 99 civic si was about to go up for grabs, so, I convinced my mom to buy this epic car, in hopes that I would one day have it. Long story short, I'm getting the car in 1 month. We're talking one previous owner, every documented oil change, and absolutely no mods.
I wish this review was a little more thorough and longer. I know there's the full feature write up, but I kinda wanted to see that 2000 Si in action more. :)
If you buy a used 2000 civic. Make sure it has nothing wrong with it. My old si ran good for about a half year and then hit me with a shit ton of mechanical issues. Stay away from private owners if you're looking at these. I just sold mine for 2k recently was hoping to get @least 5k.
The 00 si was my first love lol... I had an 07 s2000 too but it wasn't the same. I agree the feedback through the steering , no drive-by-wire made a big difference.
I've owned older Hondas and when I got my new Si I felt the same way about the drive my wire and the electric power steering, even the gear shifter doesn't move, I definately feel disconnected when im driving it
I like the new SI, but man that VTEC crossover on the 2000 SI sounds so much better. The DC2 Integra Type R, EK9 Civic Type R, and NSX R are still till this day the best racing oriented models Honda has made.
@edgar2k4 I picked up my 1999 SI and I am so happy. The newer SI's are great to but it comes down to what SI you want. I was lucky and found a mint condition, all stock now with 70000 miles. Driving this car never get old.
Idk. I have an EK. Yeah it does feel different between the two but with that said you can go back and compare it to the EF or DA...obviously you can "feel" the car better but isn't the purpose to have the car perform better?
I have the EX trim level of the 6th generation. My sister has an 8th generation and WOW what a difference. I prefer the feel of my car because I actually FEEL more.
Don't the 2012s have a little slower time than the 2015? The 0-60 time is like 6.2-6.5 seconds depending on the condition I believe for the 2015 (I own one and did a test but didn't launch it). This was done in warm weather I assume?
Sounded like the '99 had atleast part of an aftermarket exhaust to me. Nice. If you guys wanted a full comparison, you should have added my 1990 Si :) to the mix.
interesting video, but correct me if im wrong but dosent the 2000 si have 160hp so its down atleast 40hp and lots of torque compared to that 2.4 in the 2012. All in all I think it compared well considering the age diffrence.
Before I knew anything about Hondas, this video defined for me what a Civic and especially an Si is supposed to be. Light, simple, tactile, and revvy AS HELL. The closest a car can be to a Yamaha RD350.
ouch grind @ 29 , limiter was hit twice between 1:24 and 1:20, the 8th gen si coupe looks the best. they should make a hatch, but not like the ep3. FG2 is the best
For USDM yes the 99 to 2000 was the nicest looking Civic USDM. I owned a electron blue pearl 99 Si when I was 16 has my 1st car. YOU CAN FEEL THE POWER IN THE STEERING WHEEL and everyone use to tell me for some reason when my Vtec would engage it sounded lowered then others LoL
how so? also compare the 8th gen to the type r and mugen rr in japan, just a little differences in looks but i think it still looks like a civic. The 9th gen kinda looks too much of a normal car to me IMO
I had a brand new 1999 Civic Si, I ran 14.9 in the quarter at Carlsbad raceway, bone stock. This guys 16 second quarter mile is very wrong. Supposed to launch it way harder (higher RPM).
My first car was a 99 Civic Si, a Flamenco Black Pearl one. That 0-60 and 1/4 mile time were a little slow. I ran a 15.2 at 89mph in mine bone stock. I could tell it was a bad launch, didn't launch it at a high enough rpm. I launched mine at 5k rpm.
@TheJdecka Umm, the old Si (8th gen) had 197hp, not 160, and it DID have an LSD. Sure the new engine has about 40lb-ft more torque, but that's about it. It lost most of the things people liked about the old Si. It doesn't rev as high (7100 vs 8000), it no longer has VTEC on the exhaust cam, and has a cast in head exhaust manifold instead of the old separate manifold (so no aftermarket headers0.
idk, i havent driven the new one but it doesn't seem like that bad of a car. its making a crap ton more torque and still making 200hp and still revs pretty high.. for a 2.4L. same numbers as the se-r sentra pretty much and i don't think they are considered bad cars. there's only so much u can with an all motor 4cyl. i guess they could've made the handling better, but as far as power, you are going to get a whole lot more than that with this setup.
Ive got a 2012 and I hate hate the rev hang in the throttle... the harsh on and off gas pedal feel in the efi is brutal in stop and go driving. City driving is miserable in rush hour. It is like turbo lag when you take your foot off the throttle. Unless you mash the clutch you got 2 seconds of go at the same speed..
Agree 100% i have a 2008 honda civic SI and I drove the 2012 Honda civic SI.. And i have to say I was a bit disappointed.. I was thinking on trading in the 08 for the 12 and It just didn't feel right.. My 08 stock over all it's a more fun car to drive than the 12 stock.. I think if I can I may buy an old one like a 99 or 2000 and put some work in to that.. :)
This guy hits it on the dot with what's wrong with the current Si. I have an 8th gen and I prefer it over the 9th gen everyday but I do wish the steering at more feel.
I agree on not seeing them around, most have been abused to hell and look like shit. I would only want one in milano red without the spoiler. I drove a few modded ones and they were beat.
+Ah Kas Hawj I just bought a black em1 and picked up from Fresno about two weeks ago,the previous owner swapped in a boosted Jdm b20b in it and I love the damn car,it moves pretty damn fast and feels like an actual car not some zombie car
@Litestorm17 It doesn't have to though. Try out the outlander and outlander sport. It has electronic assists, but it is done so well that you would swear it hydraulics. So E-assist can be done well...just not by honda.
I'm muscle car guy but in high school I was all bout imports. Your crazy thats the nicest looking civic every produced especially in the one of a kind electron blue pearl. I had a fully built NA 1999 honda civic Si running 12.9-13.3 street tires all day. YES FWD suck's but once u simple mods such has stage 3 act clutch, pressure plate, and a light weight fly wheel those gears burnout at least mine burnout thru gears till 5th.
@MrIrony86 there will be no japanese CTR anymore. Honda Japan discontinued their entire Civic line because they have other more popular cars available. The 9th gen civics don't exist in japan
I own an 8th gen (2008) Si. It revs eagerly to 8000 RPM, which makes for some exciting on-ramps. After driving it for 3 years, I would give up the 8000 RPM red line for more torque. When you want any serious speed at 60 km/h (40 mph) you have to downshift to SECOND. Sure, the car springs alive as you thrust it into the vtec range, but you also look like "that guy" with the screaming car... Like I said - lots of fun, but I'd give up the super high revving for torque.
People have to keep in mind that Hondas weren't made for straight line performance. so 7-8 seconds to 60mph is nothing to complain about. The old Hondas were about nimbleness, grip, and fun in the corners.
Whats nice about this car is that there are tons of parts for it, and parts are cheap. Its easy to fix, modify and maintain. You can really enhance the driving experience in just a slight size upgrade in tires. Stock it runs 195/55/15. You can easily fit 205/50/15 which is a good upgrade in size. 15x7 fit well with the right offset. You can go bigger but anything bigger than 17's seem ricey to me. Good tires will really bring out the character of this car. Pair it up with some nice suspension, and you'll really see it handle. Stock were those Michelins HXMXM4s or something like that. Ive run Bridgestone RE730's, Falken Azenis (x2), Kumho MX, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup, Falken RT-615 (x2), and I'll probably try out those new Nitto NT-05s. Or maybe just sell the car. Its been good to me for the past 15 yrs. It has about 63k miles. Garaged now as I just don't drive it. Its seen less than 1000 in the past 2 years. I'm not even driving it anymore so I might just sell it.
he spoke the truth when he said the new civic si is a better car, not a better si
How in the heck did they manage to find a stock 2000 Civic Si? That to me is amazing
I have an all stock 2000 Civic Si. Maybe I'll do a walkaround after I'm done getting all the dents fixed and getting a fresh coat of Electron Blue Pearl... It's in the body shop right now.

That is really cool. Most of them have been riced or ragged out by kids.

That last comment about the new Civic Si being a better car - just not a better Honda Civic Si is spot-on, IMO.
2000 Si looks so sexy

its a shame that most of the 2000 Civics are modded. They are great when they"re stock
+Spleen's Covers Very hard to find... And I find some waaay overpriced!
+Spleen's Covers I've got a stock 2000 Civic SiR! So much fun!
Alex
Mine is stock
I would have to agree. The older felt more like a 'drivers" car. Still both nice. But the best FWD I have ever driven is the integra type R
mzondi1970 integral type R is my favorite car. Hopefully someday I’ll own one!!
@@tma4137 rock that B18C5!

fasthonda i drive a 12 civic si and i cant speak about steering difference but throttle response is not slow at all
Agreed. I had a 2000 civic si and it was the funnest car I've ever driven.
the new civics are just too luxurious for me

best comment iv ever read

Yeap
I totally agree when he said it's not raw as the 2000 civic, older vehicles were just for driving, not all those electronic gizmo. Well I'm proud of owning a 88 civic lx, handles way better than new cars today, in my opinion
Agreed, I have a 1989 Civic Hatch and it's the most fun car to drive.
I love the 2000 Civic. It's been with me since high school, and it's never failed me once for 13 years.

I own a 00 si and my dad owns the 2012 si, this review is spot on in terms of comparing the two and how they handle and feel.
why do all the new civics look fugly, ill just stick too my 2000 civic coupe with B16a2.

New civics are so ugly! 1993 to 2000 were the best looking civics!
They look similar to an Mitsubishi Eclipse.
Evan Kornblum the em2 has a nice ass. mine does ;)
actually em2 are the best looking dd cars...
Paul Williams so u think the 06-11 civics are ugly
The 99-2000 Si really is a great looking car. Very simple, and clean.
EM1 can run a 15.7 bone stock.

I like how he puts that. "its a better car, just not sure if its a better Civic Si." Perfect! Same thing i thought too man.
Not sure how reliable those Meters are though. give or take so...
awesome vid u hit the nail on the head w this one. B-series power over K-series power neday.
good work
There's 4 99-00 civic si's with original paint. 2 with stock rims. 3 of em are blue. 1 red. While 3 of em aren't stock they're tastefully done. Not riced or slammed. Lowered a little for smoother ride and some engine upgrades.
@wideopen704 12 years ago Gas was cheap, so now the new Civic is focused on fuel efficiency which compromises performance
As a current owner I think you nailed it.
What I’d like to know is… how did the open diff in the 2000 not get mentioned when the 2012 has an LSD. Seems quite strange.
Love the review. Fair and honest.
Wow thank you for this! No doubt in my mind I'm getting an 99-00 si. My first car was a 96 civic dx hatchback and it was a great car. I've owned a 88 325is and 92 vw 16v GTI.
92 vw 16v gti's are bad ass,my cousin owned one with ported and polished head, big 50mm intake manifold, nice big cams, chipped, and exhaust, that thing boogied all the way up to 8,000rpm and I beat 04 gli jettas with k04 turbo upgrade
love the honda civic em1, my friend has one, the vtec kick in so hard i cant hear stock stereo going on half
em1 ftmfw
Awesome Video!! Please make more vids like this!!
@splewy No problem, i can see why alot people are dissapointed with it, engine not reving as high and such.
Glad to see a completely stock EM1!
@PeetPeeet He's trying to say the 2000 Si feels more alive & "naked" than the new Si which seems to assist the steering in a soft manner.
The 00 si was my first love lol... I had an 07 s2000 too but it wasn't the same. I agree the feedback through the steering , no drive-by-wire made a big difference.
Very cool video. I'd like to see more of this kind of comparison.
Thanks for the comparison!
I've owned older Hondas and when I got my new Si I felt the same way about the drive my wire and the electric power steering, even the gear shifter doesn't move, I definately feel disconnected when im driving it
Such a fun little car. 99-00 will Definitely be a classic.
I like the new SI, but man that VTEC crossover on the 2000 SI sounds so much better. The DC2 Integra Type R, EK9 Civic Type R, and NSX R are still till this day the best racing oriented models Honda has made.
the last phrase he said really sums it up perfectly...
@edgar2k4 I picked up my 1999 SI and I am so happy. The newer SI's are great to but it comes down to what SI you want. I was lucky and found a mint condition, all stock now with 70000 miles. Driving this car never get old.
I'm buying a 2010 si coupe this weekend I love the 2000 model but rare to find one
i drove my buddy's '99 civic and its engine noise still makes a sportier noise than my '10 mazda3. I plan to get a civic for the engine noise someday
Idk. I have an EK. Yeah it does feel different between the two but with that said you can go back and compare it to the EF or DA...obviously you can "feel" the car better but isn't the purpose to have the car perform better?
Question, did you drive a 99 civic in good repair, or a 99 civic that nobody's maintained since the warranty ran out?
Love to see more bids like this
Im going to save up for this 2000 SI as my dailydriver when I get a job in a couple months hella nice
8th gen? as in 06-11 models? I seen some dropped ones and they looked pretty nice
The EM1 is a legend but a modified 9th gen is a dope ass ride exterior & interior
I'd like to see it timeless design such a nice car either way. Just got into a 2013 FB6 could not be happier with my choice.
interesting video, but correct me if im wrong but dosent the 2000 si have 160hp so its down atleast 40hp and lots of torque compared to that 2.4 in the 2012.
@tstonesports Mustang v6 w/ 305 horses starts at 22,300
Camaro v6 w/ 312 horses starts at 23,800
Challeneger v6 w/305 horses 24,600 point and match
Love to see a bone sock em1 as well. Extremely nice. Depending on mileage that car is worth a pretty penny.
I like how here he says the 2000 version has lots of roll but on the picture caption on their website is says it cornered flat -__-
you guy should do a Vw MK6 GTI vs a MK4 2002-up AWP 1.8T GTI there is only 20hp difference between the 2 cars i would like to see what you guys thing
Old car didn't have ABS and it stop at 129ft. Not bad. But why does the New Civic still stops at 129ft?
This guy hits it on the dot with what's wrong with the current Si. I have an 8th gen and I prefer it over the 9th gen everyday but I do wish the steering at more feel.
those were the old days.. miss those 99 si, so rare to even seen on now....
I agree on not seeing them around, most have been abused to hell and look like shit. I would only want one in milano red without the spoiler. I drove a few modded ones and they were beat.
+Ah Kas Hawj I just bought a black em1 and picked up from Fresno about two weeks ago,the previous owner swapped in a boosted Jdm b20b in it and I love the damn car,it moves pretty damn fast and feels like an actual car not some zombie car
great and spot on review!
@Litestorm17 It doesn't have to though. Try out the outlander and outlander sport. It has electronic assists, but it is done so well that you would swear it hydraulics. So E-assist can be done well...just not by honda.
I'm guessing that 2000 wasn't a museum piece, meaning that there was wear on components and probably replacement parts etc.
What a beautiful Electron Blue EM1 ! Shows how perfect the 6th Gen Si was!
@MrIrony86 there will be no japanese CTR anymore. Honda Japan discontinued their entire Civic line because they have other more popular cars available. The 9th gen civics don't exist in japan
love it this comparison...Thanks!!!...1999-2000 is still the best Civic series...Multi-link suspension and as you said raw honest power...
@joeyhcmc I think the 8th gen civic si FG2 is the best with the EM1 coming close second
