Actually it’s the Lithium battery that is affected by high temperatures. They become unstable and have been known to catch on fire and burn the vehicle down. Cold temperatures also affect the Lithium batteries and lessen the range of the vehicle. The NiMH(Nickel Metal-Hydride battery is unaffected by high or low temperatures. The Lithium batteries also cost a lot more than the NiMH batteries. No one knows how the Lithium battery will compare to the longevity of the NiMH battery because they haven’t been in service nearly as long. The NiMH batteries have been known to power a vehicle for 200,000 to 300,000 miles. FYI

Here's an oddity: Prius e-AWD and Corolla Hybrid models for the U.S. Market do not have a spare tire--only a fix a flat kit. Non e-AWD Prius models for the U.S. do have the compact spare tire with it. Canadian model of the Prius e-AWD and Corolla Hybrid includes spare tire. With the U.S. model Corolla Hybrid, after you remove the styrofoam, there's actually enough room to put a full size spare tire. For many, not having a spare tire is a complete deal breaker so I think Toyota ought to rethink their cost cutting strategy.

Hi, I suppose the only question which is left to ponder is whether the Lithium-Ion batteries have the same impressive lifespan as the Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries. The Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries have been around since the first Prius made its debut over 20 years ago.

if you park it in the garage, it will last at least 15 years and unlimited miles. the problem is aging and heat, not so much about mileage. in \UK/ireland, they have unlimited miles 15 years warranty because it is always cloudy there. i lived in Florida for decades and my Prius 2nd gen battery gave up after 11 years 230k miles. Heat is the main problems for battery, your AC is part of the cooling and make sure it runs in summer all the time.

I own a 2016 Prius with about 155,000 miles. Being that's its 5 years old with higher mileage, would my battery require to be replaced sooner because of the higher mileage? Or can I expect age to be a better gauge for battery life expectancy.

    • @MuhammadAli-ev5jc
      @MuhammadAli-ev5jc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

dont go off of just age of the batteries, look at your MPG, if your city MPG has gone down significantly over the years it might be time to think about changing the battery. If not, dont touch it. Most of the time the battery wont totally go bad, it will just be a faulty cell in the battery that dings the code, you can get a cell to replace that one. (NIMH btw) there are lithium kits available for the prius to upgrade from NIMH but again you have to consider costs. I just got a 2010 prius with 207k miles and original battery. From what I have tested, It is giving me slightly less than the original city MPG when it was new. and with gas prices the way they are, it actually is still worth keeping around with the older battery. Using the AC in the summer will drain it quicker, same with heated seats in the winter. Use the cabin heater when on the highway, that is basically free heating. resistive heating will rely on the auxilary battery and will also require it to be recharged from the main hybrid battery, I'll be posting a video on making a custom auxilary battery if you're interested, i think I might actually be able to make the hybrid battery too based off of voltages and the way the system is set up. But again, this is really only going to affect city milage rather than hwy, At those speeds you would end up using the gas motor to power the vehicle rather than electric.

Same exact type of coolant. But the two systems (engine vs. inverter) are completely separate. The engine coolant gets a lot hotter vs. the inverter coolant. You need to change coolant in both systems. Inverter coolant change is incredibly easy = drain and fill. Engine coolant change is a little more complicated, making sure the heater is set to hot, draining completely from the block as well as radiator, and filling to ensure no bubbles are trapped. Still not rocket science.

Hello expert. I have a Prius 2006 that requires some hybrid battery modules or cells. Do you know the part number for the hybrid battery modules that are within the hybrid battery pack? The hybrid battery module is NiMH, 7.2v, 6.5amps. Thanks for the information.

Good discourse, thank you both. My 2c worth is merely that NiMh in other guises, are pretty poor for shelf-life and self-discharging. The small NiMh batteries I use for replacing consumer batteries in torches, cameras, etc, they do very badly if left unused for more than 6 months, even the ‘long life/pre-charged’ type. My Li-ion or LiFe (Lithium-Iron, a similar set of characteristics), experience is from my small motorcycle replacement battery. Short version, bike off the road during winter, the lead acid antiquated batteries die after 6 weeks or 2 months non-use. You can;t even turn the bike over without recharging it. The Li-ion is about 2/3 charge, when the lead acid one is dead. Thus, it starts the bike, and runs fine and you may not need to charge it at all. I don’t have a NiMh battery for my bike, so I have to refer to the lead acid experience…but, crucially, the single thing NiMh and lead acid have in common, is ‘dying’ through non-use, and being unable to be revived. Li-ion or LiFe types, are fine, they tolerate remaining at low charge states, the same as deep-discharging. Critically then, the later year toyotas are the ones you want, they have moved with the Yaris hybrid, to Li-ion from NiMh.
There’s many, many Yaris hybrid owners have troubles with batteries. And famously of course, the 12V batteries are commonly a terrible issue on both EVs and hybrids! It’s astonishing, and should never happen now. Hybrids and EVs ought to have 12V batteries that are Li-ion, as of the 2020’s. There is a price difference of maybe $300 or so? If it averts even one single ‘breakdown’ or failure to start, or warning light episode, it’s paid for itself - and by the problem pages in various online discussions, it will definitely happen to a lot of owners. Take care all, and thanks for this video info.

I have a 2006 Prius I bought in 09 with 331k miles, original hybrid battery. I just upgraded this week with lithium iron phosphate batteries. Even though my original battery still showed in good shape, I wanted to try the lithium. Also have a 08 Prius with 313k, original miles, original battery. This car sits in Florida year round, 6 months parked in the brutal summer heat, and 6 months I drive it. Like one reviewer said, they changed very little, in fact my 06 and 08 are identical in every way except different colors. I love the 50+ mpg! I'm not the classiest guy on the block but I sure enjoy no car payments.....

I just saw something on the internet that scares me about the Vehical, that i dident know. Transmission is the last thing may fail in hybrid 3rd gen or newer. They may last millions of miles. The battery is the weakest point especially if you live in hot weather. They last typically 11-12 years just after the warranty is over. If you park it in garage or live i mild weather like Seatle, they last really long. At least 15 years, unlimited miles.

Change the ATF fluid. Don't use the OEM WS fluid. It's not synthetic. And don't use the phony "Synthetic" ATF at the auto parts store (Group 3) It has no synthetic base. Order from Amazon real synthetic ATF: REDLINE D6. It's Group 4/5.

For a video specifically about lithium-ion and nickel batteries, it's not so great on the facts about lithium-ion and nickel batteries. The lithium-ion batteries are the ones more affected by extreme temperatures, and the AWD prius is the one with the nickel battery, not the FWD prius which has lithium.

    SUMMARY:
Jeff Teig from Fred Anderson Toyota introduces expert Ali, who discusses the differences between nickel-metal hydride and lithium-ion batteries in Toyota hybrids. Lithium-ion batteries are lighter, faster to charge, and provide better mileage. Toyota hybrids typically have nickel-metal hydride batteries, but some, like the Venza, have lithium-ion batteries. Hybrid battery packs are typically four to four and a half feet wide, one and a half to two feet deep, and one foot tall. They are located in the trunk or under the second back seat and must not be covered to ensure proper cooling. Other components include the coolant reservoir, washer jug, gasoline engine, air filter, inverter converter, and 12-volt battery.

Because you don't live in mild enough weather. If you live in FL or Arizona, for sure it will die in less than 11 years. You should keep it in the garage or shade to make it last 15 years or more. Don't forget to turn the AC on all the time, it is part of the cooling too. It cost about $3000 not $1000 on Camry.

My 2016 prius gen 4 has 150k miles and it's still running very good but Toyota doesn't want you to know this also dealership won't tell you this simple thing you need to change your damn air filter for fan blower or else you will ens up replacing the fan witch is expensive in between$200 up to $400 or you will burn your battery when it does over heat so be aware replace your filter for $15 or less evey 60k up to 80k miles

Hybrid vehicles have so much equipment and electrical systems. So much to fail. Give me a small displacement gas engine with a turbo.
Simplicity is better and more reliable. I had a friend that drove a VW Rabbit that got 52mpg with her Diesel engine. And that was back in the 1970’s.

    • @andreien1445

Well my choice would be an unaspirated small block V8. But those have pretty much gone by the wayside. Engine options are limited nowadays. That’s why I have a 2007 Mustang GT that gets 25mpg on the highway and 17 in town. That mpg is not good enough for the government nowadays.

That has not been the history of Hybrids. Many Prius's have gone well over 200k without any issue and no battery replacement. The Hybrid transmission (ECTV) has been bullet proof for Toyota over 20 years.
