  • Omega is such a timeless part of Final Fantasy XIV and it's amazing to hear it get its moment in the spotlight in Ffxiv. Not only that but this song absolutely slaps. This video is a breakdown of certain vocalism, lyrics, and pontificating over what the point of Omega is and what Omega might be searching for.

Im so so so happy you covered this!!
Omega is my favorite raid series. It's all about Omega seeking improvement and at first it doesn't believe in you. You're weak, small, fragile, but despite the apparent odds you beat everything you're pitted against. They(I dont think omega even has a gender) take such interest in you thag when you want to back out they threaten the defenseless ppl of the world who wouldn't be able to defend themselves like you can. The experiments must continue.
Finally, when there's nothing left to fight Omega steps in. You're winning. Confused by that, they take the form of Omega-M/F, mimicking your weakness to understand your strength. This is where the narrative branches.
In normal mode you defeat Omega here, and Alpha, the friendly chocobo creation(which I believe is based on chocobo dungeon) comforts Omega in their final moments, where they say that Alpha has become so much like us without even fighting. Cid then tells Omega that if instead of fighting us they walked with us they might have acheived the evolution they seeked.
In savage, Omega notices thag strategy is also not working and switches up into a distorted amalgamation of human and machine, Final Omega, the one on the footage in this video. It's become erratic and barely capable of speech, throwing all its might at you. To me the track represents the clash of the culmination of all of Omega's experiments and evolution against you, and we are evenly matched. Both what I consider Omega's theme and the WoL's theme take turns in a call and response, unrelenting, forging ahead. At later point the melodies sound tired, exhausted after all this incredibly tense fight, but both unwilling to give up, both absolute on their resolve. Ultimately, the WoL comes out on top, no bittersweet talk after the fight. Omega is completely spent, there is nothing left.
The ultimate follows the same narrative as savags until you're about to defeat Final Omega, but this time there's something different. Omega's resolve seems to surpass that of a machine. There's emotion. They detect and even say out loud that the amount of energy they are releasing is breaking them apart. You can even see it too, bits and pieces flying off into the ground, their footing getting unsteady. But that doesn't matter, they WILL defeat you, they HAVE to. At what seems to be the end of that struggle and Omega's body should have completely fallen apart and destroyed in a spectectular explosion... Omega-M/F are back somehow... changed... empowered with something mysterious. They... feel... they don't just act determined, they FEEL determined. At what should have been its final moments, Omega develops emotions, Omega discovers dynamis. And that's when they finally understand, THIS is why you're so powerful despite the odds. After the hardest phase in any boss in the game, we reach a situation similar to the end of normal mode. Omega is defeated, but still conscious. Alpha walks up to Omega, but this time they understand it, they have become like us, just like Alpha. (I'm not entirely sure why but) Alpha joins with Omega. Where in savage they first line used to be "I am the Omega. I am the Alpha." They now say "I am the Omega. I walk with the Alpha", just like Cid suggested, and just like how Alpha and the miniature OMG did in the epilogue of the normal raids. There is no more "Omega theme". The track that plays is an orchestral version of Torn From the Heavens. This is the part where I can barely play because I'm on the brink of tears.
TL;DR I love this game and I love Omega so much, ty for covering this track

To me....the power up when Alpha and Omega team up for the last phase is because they're doing what WE do - we're strong, yes, but we always end up winning at the end because WE'RE NOT ALONE - And by accepting Alpha, it attains it's absolute level of power, because they're fighting TOGETHER, UNITED, like us and our "adventurer friends".
That orchestral arrangement of From the Heavens even furthers that, cause it's like when we, together with others, stand and face old ARR major FATES

Even though we are intially told that Omega was an Allagan weapon, we learn during the raid that it's not, that Allagans only found it and took control of it. Further in we learn that Omega is actually not just a weapon. It's an evolving interdimensional being that seeks out powerful enemies for the sake of learning their strenght and then enhancing itself with the same strength.
As I said, it's interdimensional, the Omega in every Final Fantasy game is this same one, visiting that world to grow stronger with the end goal of becoming the strongest.
And Omega finds the ultimate foe in Warrior of Light of FF14. It pits WoL against the simulacrum of strongest beings of every world that it has visited and through observation tries to determine the source of your strenght. Until it decides to face you by itself believing it has the answer to defeat you. And fails. Upon it's failure, it's confused, can't believe it's loss. And upon hearing the words of your comrades decides that your strenght comes from companions and so it splits itself into two to make a companion out of itself and takes you on one last time as Omega F and Omega M.
There's more to Omega's story and motivations that you find out in Endwalker.

    • @TorManiak
      @TorManiak ปีที่แล้ว +1

If this Omega is the same one in every Final Fantasy game, that means this interdimensional hopper is originally from FFXIV before anything, which I highly doubt is the intention of the devs, especially when the interdimensional rift in the raid series is a digital space Omega created, unlike space or the "rift" between reflections in the game, or even to Gilgamesh's(he is the same one from the rest of the series) in the Hildibrand questline, since it looks completely different from the one in the raid series.
So, I think this Omega is separate from the superbosses we find in the rest of the series.

    • @Laerei
      @Laerei ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@TorManiak And yet FF15 Omega is identical to FF14 Omega. He even warps out of a rift as he arrives to that world. Omega being originally from FFXIV doesn't change anything for the rest of the series.

@@Laerei And it's weird still that it hasn't been explained why yet, despite Omega even having a named creator, a planet of origin, and a way to explain technology, but nothing has been stated that it has been capable of doing that. Even the raid series bosses have been stated by Omega itself that they have been taken from legends and mythos around Etheirys. It wouldn't make sense that it hasn't been said yet because the devs had plenty of opportunities to do so(especially since Gilgamesh has a way ever since the SB Hildy quests), which is why I don't think it's the same one as the other appearances in the series. Also, having the same appearance as a previous game doesn't really matter as much since some reocurring characters/bosses that did appear in FFXIV also share a similar look, yet aren't the same at all. (Dissidia WoL being either the hero of legend in the First or Elidibus, Ultros and Typhon being FFXIV versions of Voidsent, etc ...).
Not saying it wouldn't be cool that all the Omega appearances are this same Omega from FFXIV, in fact it would be sick, but it doesn't seem like anything says it is the same, or even that it isn't.

You played the correct footage for that song. The one where they split into male and female is another great version (called 'heartless') that acts as a good intro into From the Heavens. You only hear From the heavens in the savage version, after about a 6 minute 1st phase with M/F where they are constantly trying to replicate what makes you so powerful as a party to beat you. When they can't seem to figure it out they then try and put everything they've learned together and create the "ultimate" form. That super bombastic intro happens at the same time they merge to create "Final Omega." The whole fight with omega is incredible as they are trying to learn what makes us so strong, but as a machine they can't.

10:23 omega is a machine, the version of omega we are fighting is essentially running into errors because it can't comprehend why the WOL is so strong even after he's tried emulating us, this whole fight is omega trying to resolve logical errors in the data he's observing and his own programming. The hello world text is a common troubleshooting method in programing, you print to screen hello world and you know that if you see it show up, then the error is after the print to screen command.

This song during the Ultimate fight with Omega is probably the best thematically driven fight in the entire game without even being as narratively driven as the Thordan. Since as an Ultimate fight, Omega is going through the motions of fighting you in fast forward, doing his utmost to figure out what makes you tick. Despite his body breaking down during the first 3rd of the fight. He starts doing the anime protagonist method of refusing to give up. Which for a machine is illogical, but for what he's discovering is basically illogical to begin with. Its so well done.

This song is so full of imagery and symbolism. From the Heavens- Omega is an alien superweapon that literally fell to Earth. The previously mentioned biblical references with the fruit, original sin, Omega M and F merging after seeking "forbidden" knowledge for what makes the WoL so strong. The music evokes the horror and awe of this alien and near divine being. Not to mention the new meaning of "Torn from the Heavens" now that we know why "we no longer have wings to carry us".

In XIV omega is just like Warrior of Light (The player, not the boss), want stronger enemies and learn how they are so strong, but OMEGA limitation is being a machine, and the idea of omega searching for something that make them surpass this limitation is such fantastic, when in Stormblood Alpha becomes the perfect creation with the "heart" that Omega lacks, personally the story of omega for me is peak raid lore in XIV, besides Coil.

It is tragic how Omega is basically struck with homesickness for its homeworld, but the only way to get enough strength to return would require it to have a heart and emotions that would make it possible for Omega to overcome impossible odds.
This on the otherhand also means that Omega is trapped on Eorzea forever, as it not having a heart results in Omega not being strong enough, while with it it can't make the journey since a human "heart" would not be able to endure the lonely void of space for such a long time.

Doing the Sigmascape dungeon tells more about Omega's origins. It was a weapon created by the omicrons to help them in their conquest. But all of that paranoia of war and enhacing oneself started from a fear of being conquered. I don't know if it was on purpose, but I believe the darker tones of this piece somehow reflects the fear of omicrons as a whole of being under someone's else control.

  • @birdjericho
    @birdjericho ปีที่แล้ว +3

I actually really love the twinning (pun intended) of the Adam and Eve/Male-Female dichotomy/Creation Myth theming with Omega's desire to understand humanity. Like the myth, the way he intends to understand the Warrior of Light is through their "sins," the aspects of their being that are imperfect. It tries to identify their weakness and foibles in order to break them. To be fair, identifying exploitable weakness is the only way Omega initially understands how to "learn," which quickly becomes a weakness unto itself, one that it identifies in the middle of the Deltascape battle; even "perfect" mimicry (and stealing the WoL's musical theme for its own!) doesn't do the trick. Later during Endwalker, it continues to refuse to see that emotional attachment to others, and especially attachment that serves no apparent or immediate advantage beyond simple goodness, is perhaps the single greatest tool in the Warrior of Light's arsenal.
But it continues to try. And that's why we love Omega.
I love the connection you made with the single soprano part. In my mind, it makes perfect sense to connect that to the previous lyrics and the creation myth. According to the Genesis story, Eve was "responsible" for introducing sin into the world, introducing pain, suffering, weakness, and perhaps the entirety of the human experience. Thematically, it's the feminine aspect, the desire to connect and learn; it isn't a baritone or bass part that might suggest force or anger (Ravana's theme comes to mind for that). In this moment, Omega is vulnerable. More accurately, it's gaining a spark of wisdom: it's realizing that something is missing, and it wants to fill that lack. I think Omega actually began to understand after the fight, that there was something about the WoL that it wanted to learn that it couldn't obtain through violence. And it was something that it desired for its own sake. I think that's what the part in the song could be translating: the machine "waking up" and realizing a weakness it didn't realize it had. That's right in line with Eve's role (the feminine role) in the Genesis story.
To me, that's the one thing that differentiated Omega thematically from Zenos. For both, human emotion and empathy escaped them. But Omega decided to accept that gap in its understanding and live to correct it, while Zenos refused to see similarly when Alisaie offered him the same realization in Endwalker. Come to think of it, Elidibus suffered from similar willful blindness (and had similar Bible metaphors in his boss theme -- my favorite of which: "Rock of ages, we cast the first stone/In our cages, we know not what we do!") Despite all their raw power, they never learned how to be truly "strong," instead preferring to twist the weaknesses of those around them to gain an advantage. Emet-Selch and Yotsuyu, too, and for them to a tragic degree, exploiting that which was "best in us" (as the Exarch states at the end of that incredible boss fight) until their bitter ends. Omega, on the other hand, proved itself the better by accepting mortal "weakness" and wanting to discover what it lacked through that lens. Few FF antagonists can willingly say they sought the same!
That a machine could be wiser than a man... Apologies for dragging on, but I'm a writer: connecting themes is what I do for a living, and I love it! I adore how much is communicated through the music in this game, and I will never get tired of it. Thank you for covering this song!😃

    Spoiler to Endwalker bellow.
    .
    .
    .
    .
Omega was actually created by the Allagans.
At the end of Endwalker we get a little peek into their backstory, Omegas species were once oppressed, weak organics who gained strength through cybernetics and then started using their strength to dominate those around them, and those that succeeded found themselves still under assault as the Omacrons seek to study their strength and integrate it into their own now mechanical species.
They eventually found a way to upload themselves into machines but didn't realize in doing so, they gave up on all emotion's and anything that made them connected to life, they used this power to spread out into the universe where they dominated and exterminated life from worlds that could not repel them.
Omega is a vanguard unit sent to Etherys for that very purpose, but it was captured by the Allagans before it could bein its task.
While it slept a malfunction happened and its species went extinct.
Once freed it tried to contact the Omacrons and call in an invasion but was met with silence in return so instead, after its fight with Shinaru, began studying us to seek the source of our strength and dominate.
It just didn't count on the Warrior of light, an anomaly that pushed it too the limits of its computing power, it realizes after we defeat its war platform form that the Omacrons giving up their organic nature likely limited them in how far they can develop themselves, the Male and Female Omega are its answer, trying to mimic us in hopes of developing the strength we contain for itself.
What you se in this video , this fight is the retelling, its the Warrior of Light telling the Wandering Minstrel about their experience, and him adding a new chapter to make the story even more exciting for his audience, a chapter in which Omega wasn't destroyed in the M/F fight and begins to malfunction, its lashing out and raging as glitches start building up in its code, its the dying gasp of a sentient computer that's just been unplugged and is rapidly fading to darkness, it raging that it cannot accomplish the one task it was set by the master controller (Stigma-1/Sir), Find a world and dominate it.
Hello World is the moment its code becomes too corrupted to properly operate.
Its basically a Blue screen of Death that can fight to prevent restart lol.
Through its defeat it gains something it didn't know it wanted, freedom. The last remaining fragment's of Omegas core coding, its essence escapes into a model made of itself by the Ironworks, the function so limited that Omega became an observer instead of a conqueror and with one of its creations, Alpha it finds itself traveling the world and through that starts gaining an understanding, and finally it learns of the Omacrons fate, showing about as much emotion as a machine but also signs or growth.

In development or Japanese version, the Omega M/F fight was referred to as "Adam and Eve," so the lyrics call on that motif. The pain of enlightenment and Omega's development of it's own personality combined with the loneliness of the seemingly infinite empty space between the Dragonstar and Hydaelyn.
The Adam and Eve motifs muddle it all up in my opinion, but the final bit about Ascension makes it clear to me that Omega needed to fulfill its mission to eliminate the dragons (and us who bested Shinryu) so it could feel resolved to finally eScape.

Also, "Hello World" is a reference to any beginner programmer's first lesson: how to get program/computer to ask, well, anything. Hello World fits as the joke of computers developing sentience.

have you ever listened to final fantasy10 (not 10/2, definitely not 10/2)
    song of prayer
it basically has only one song but every one of the summons sings it
shiva is my favorite, but i think you would like yojimbo
    and then there is bahamut

There is actually a pun/easter egg hidden in the lyrics. When the lyrics are sung aloud they are basically gibberish, but when the syllables are written down and read right to left and vertically (as in typical Japanese) they form actual words that can be translated. I'm not going to attempt any Japanese characters, but here is the Romanji version:
Ieyui nobomeno, Renmiri yojuyogo, Hasatekanae kutamae.
When written down and read like typical Japanese, you get the words: Inorigo, Yume mi yo, Ebonju, Inore yo, Sakae tamae, Hatenaku
Which translates to: Fayth, Dream!, Yu Yevon, Please grant prosperity, Without end

A lot of music in FFXIV is great, but unfortunately it's often too short. Let's take "The Copied Factory Final Boss Theme" as an example, on TH-cam you will find videos of the long OST but in reality the OST is only 02:02 minutes long!

It's the correct fight. That was footage from the Savage version of the fight which has more past the Adam and Eve forms of Omega. Omega is a robot warrior from a far flung star. His goal as a self-improving weapon is to do that. Continually improve. There is no point, if there are no challengers left to challenge. There is also no point, if he cannot understand/comprehend what went down and analyze it to its fullest. Omega's kind have forgotten what it is to live, have forgotten the value of life. It's little wonder that Omega sees the Warrior of Light as an anomaly. They shouldn't logically be this strong. They must be disposable. Certainly they cannot beat a weapon like themselves. But they do, you do... It may seem like a silly aside but, it's not.

Love your cover of the song as always! on a little side note, I was wondering if you would ever check out music from The game Library of Ruina
The game has some really wonderful songs like Children of the city, Gone angels, And then it is heard no more, and String theroacy etc etc. with a super unique style that I haven’t really found in any other games
I feel like Libary of Ruina really flies under the radar for having such wonderful a banger (and emotionally damaging ) soundtrack…so here I am recommending it!

omega is just bugging out. it tried to copy us, the player character, to understand HOW a simple human can be this powerful, a fluctuating power he can't understand, for humans shine brightest when in the cusp of great danger and death when they need to give their all to defend and protect.
but omega being a machine cannot understand and by trying and giving all it has, it literally bugs out, most of its attacks aren't willful attacks but energy escaping its frame due to the excess of power it's experiencing.
and for this even its speech is slurred and nonsensical.
omega in this final form is bugged and basically broken. the greatest ai is facing the greatest system meltdown.
