Indian Grey Hornbill male bird feeding berries to female - filmed in Gujarat state, India.
Discovering the nesting site of a hornbill was a dream come true! When we found their nesting site, female was already sealed in a natural crevice of a very ancient-looking tree behind a Lord Shiva temple. The male hornbill was a busy bee, brought a variety of berries to feed his mate. During our visits, we noticed something amazing: the count of berries he fed to his mate in a single trip! Our highest record? Nine berries! 😲 It's incredible to see how much effort the male hornbill puts into feeding his partner.
The nesting site of the hornbills was a hub of activity! During our visits, we spotted various prey birds hanging around. On the first visit, it was the Oriental Honey Buzzard, then on the second it was Shikra, and on the third, a juvenile Crested Serpent Eagle. After a fortnight passed, the nesting site became quiet, but we spotted several Indian Grey Hornbill juvenile birds foraging nearby. It seems like the nesting was a success.🤞🏻

The Indian grey hornbill is known for its unique nesting behavior. They choose specifically indigenous trees with suitable hollows 10-13 m up for nesting. During the nesting period, the female hornbill seals herself inside the tree hollow leaving only a narrow slit through which the male can pass food to her. This sealing protects the female and the eggs from predators.
The male hornbill diligently searches for various prey items, including insects, small reptiles, fruits, and seeds, to feed its mate and offspring. It then brings the food items to the nest and passes them through the narrow slit in the seal to the female and later to the chicks. This transfer of food is typically done through regurgitation, where the male regurgitates the food into the female's mouth or directly to the chicks.
This feeding behavior of Indian grey hornbills during the nesting period is a remarkable example of parental care and cooperation between mates, contributing to the success and survival of the species.
