- We visited Dean Lister at Victory MMA in sunny San Diego, CA and he gave us some tips and showed us new tricks for devastating leg locks. Here Dean demonstrates a straight kneebar from inside the half-guard. You can check out more of the techniques Dean showed us in issue 22 of Jiu-Jitsu Magazine.
About Dean:
Dean is a is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who won the 2003 ADCC (the world's most prestigious submission wrestling/Nogi event) in the open weight division. He has a background in wrestling, experience in Sambo, and has competed in MMA for the top organizations.

Dean how are you keeping your bottom leg from getting caught up?
Caught up on what?
There's nothing for it to get caught up on. After learning this one from Dean I've hit it a ton of times. You have to be sure to stuff the arms before you commit, otherwise you'll get stuck in no mans land. As you fall to your side your bottom leg will free up since your opponent's body will not be on top of your leg. Dean also mentions in the video that if their on their back you'll go for a pass and play a different game. So this move is predicated that your opponent's on his side.

What if the guy on the bottom has his legs in a figure four position?
go for the toe hold on the foot he crossed with, when he straightens to defend go back to the kneebar
