There has been some great comments and questions to this video. In efforts to keep this video relatively simple and not super long, I only included the states that didn't tax certain types of income at all without exceptions. For example, New York doesn't tax federal pensions but they do tax some private pensions so I didn't include New York in the list that doesn't tax pensions.
The video would have to be very long to cover the nuances of each state. You may want to look in to the specifics of your state to understand exactly what your retirement might look like.

I just read New York’s ruling on the taxability of the TSP. The case involved someone who had rolled over an IRA into the TSP. The state said that the money in the TSP that was based on the rollover is taxable, and the money that was based on the federal wages is not.

Withdrawals from retirement accounts and pensions (both public and private) in Georgia are only partially taxed. Anyone over 65-years-old can deduct up to $65,000 of retirement income. I don't know anyone (I'm sure there are D.C. politicians) that has a Fed Pension over $65,000. So basically, for the vast majority of retired Fed Employees, their pensions are not taxed in Georgia once they reach 65. If I'm reading this incorrectly, please inform. I plan on retiring in GA partially based on the no SS and no > $65k pension tax.

The Social Security retirement "benefit" is taxed by the federal government because it was not taxed when the federal government took it from one's pay (same as TSP). As we all know (some ignore it), our federal government loves to tax [take] everything that it can. Listen to 2:40 through 2:55 of this video.

We live in Alaska...limit our 401k income to less than $80k so our federal tax rate is 12%, and we qualify for subsidized Blue Cross Gold health insurance under Obamacare...that saves us over $25k in health insurance per year. Alaska has no state income tax, no state sales tax, no state estate tax, at age 65 the first $150,000 property appraisal is waived from property taxes. Our annual permanent fund dividend check is taxed by the federal government.

If state tax is withheld from the amount you paid into TSP, you may be able to not pay state tax, again, on that amount (but on the earnings and match). I started drawing a state pension and for the first 1.5 year, I am receiving the amount I paid into the state pension fund so no state tax, just federal. I will consult a tax accountant the first year I draw FERS and from my TSP. When I filed for it, I received a letter explaining that the State first pays you what you contributed to the pension fund; I held onto it for my tax return files. Also got same explanation with my state W2 R for my pension for 2021. Beware though: TurboTax couldn’t calculate it so I had to do it myself.

It all depends on the state you live in. For example I have heard horror stories about how some states would go after federal employees for unpaid state taxes while they were working overseas for many years and had zero property or ties to that state but simply failed to change their address to a new state. Your safest bet is to officially change your state residence to one of these states that have zero taxes. You should also research how your state handles state residents who live outside the US, you may have to file a state tax return every year even if you owe no state taxes.

Now if I were to move to FL (or one of the states that dont tax tsp distribution) if i choose a lump sum distribution while living in one of these states can I thereafter move to CA or NY without any tax ramification of that lump sum distibution while living in FL? Again, articulate and precise. Thank you

You missed NY State. NY State does NOT tax Federal Pensions.

@@PlanYourFederalBenefits Plus, NYS does not tax TSP distributions for FERS retirees. NYS considers those distributions as pension payments. There is a Tax Advisory Opinion from 2015 on this. TSB-A-15(6)I

Your information is very informative, thank you always. But I came across it on the New York website. “Your pension income is not taxable in New York State when it is paid by: New York State or local government. the federal government, including Social Security benefits”

That is correct, NY doesn't tax federal pensions but they do tax private pensions so I didn't include it. Nice clarification!

@@PlanYourFederalBenefits What?! Your TH-cam Channel name is Haws FEDERAL Advisors! The name of the video is "The States That Won't Tax Your FEDERAL Retirement Income," but it wasn't worth mentioning the states that DO tax other pensions but not Federal?!?!?! Example, I live in KANSAS and they don't tax FEDERAL pensions.
So, you're audience is FEDERAL employees but all you show is is the few states that ... oh, never mind. You blew this one! I request a BIG DO OVER! Example, I KNOW Kansas doesn't tax the FERS annuity, but I'm not sure about TSP withdrawals. (Yes, that will require some actual research on your part!)

@@PlanYourFederalBenefits I too was surprised to not hear NY as I knew they didn't tax government pensions. This is true at the state and city level as well. No government pensions are taxed. You mentioned it but probably would have been helpful to just list the states that have no income tax whatsoever.
