Dude, even as a bassist myself I sometimes forget there even is a bass playing while listening to this.
Lee is just such a support player and just so rock solid and secure, the bass morphs together with the rest of the rhythm section into a singular, groovy instrument. It's actually nuts how relaxing his grove and pocket are - like a warm, cosy hammock. Until he doesn't follow the root notes any more, sticks to a single drone and makes it feel like the hammock just stopped mid air on the apex of a swing.

I love how Sklar stops playing for multiple bars in the beginning. He shows you just how important the bass is but also shows you that you can be even so impactful when you pull back and take it away for just a little, you can sorta feel the tension build and you start wondering “when’s it coming back in?” Then he gives you a slide and that’s it before giving the song a massive shock and starting up that beautiful heartbeat that the bass is once more!

Nobody “plays for the song” like lovely Lee Sklar. I constantly try and play with his wonderful musical empathy in mind. Just what is needed, no more.

This is what I come here for. I used to get to jam with guys like this almost every night for hours on end. You settle into a bubble with each other and go group exploring. Great stuff.

Wow! That Clavinet through a waa pedal, has to be the funkiest keyboard sound out there! Tight as ever but then what would you expect from this band of heavy hitters?

Neal Evans from Soulive combines that setup with a distortion pedal. Might be a bit extreme to some. But I totally dig it!
