      i can totally see that. everyone would soon want to emulate the "raw" vibe and unstable camera-placement in the future. maybe even the vertical ratio of the video lol

      Not exactly, theres a limit to how good it can look, and its reality. Once cameras reach perfect reality-capturing abilities, the only thing we can go back to is slightly less realistic. Which is nothing in compare to modern day vs the super 8.

      Trust me, as an old geezer, who was making Super 8 movies almost 50 years ago, there is nothing like holding one of those cameras, and actually hearing that motor sound when you press the trigger. That's part of the Super 8 magic, that today's film-making community may never understand.

    Always refreshing to hear that someone somewhere still has some appreciation for the analog film past efforts. I still shoot in 8mm minus the Super, on expired film stocks, trying to more closely approximate what was a common home movie. Many films were forgotten after shooting, and only developed many years later, or stored in the poorest of conditions, with broad temperature variations, or worse yet extreme humidity or dry spells which cause the cellulose to deteriorate quickly. Nothing last forever, and pristine images just don't seem to have the same effect as an old picture postcard from a direct contact print from back in the day. Very warm regards my friend. Have a grand holiday season.

    Every single person I've ever heard talk about digital movie making has launched into this 30-90 minute long technical explanation of the various engineering techniques they've spent months and even years deploying in order to make their $10,000 cam corder and $5,000 software plugin suite emulate the look of film. That speaks volumes, doesn't it. I think most people enjoy the suspension of disbelief they get with "film", something utterly unobtainable with digital even if you pacify it with unsteady camera shaking handheld shots and a premise of being documentary.

    • @MRTOWELRACK
      @MRTOWELRACK 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      From my university arts course, I learned about early 20th century photography (refreshing for a bio sci student). However, I was intrigued by how photography was frowned upon among the fine arts community. Film was seen as overtly mechanical. Film has since earned its respect, which makes me wonder about what's ahead for digital.
      It's only after such forms past (e.g. film, vinyl, pixel art graphics) that we begin to cherish them as something to reflect upon. Each form presents limitations but with those limitations comes a reminder to reconsider how you approach a subject matter.
      It's a personal choice but I work in digital and try to be sincere about it. My videos aren't very cinematic and they have digital artifacts because like every medium, they have their own set of imperfections. Maybe that's why I like digital. I've worked in film too. However, I enjoy digital because it presents a new set of opportunities with its own set of challenges.

    • @ChesneyDigital
      @ChesneyDigital 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      MRTOWELRACK Thanks for taking the time to share that. I was most intrigued by the statement about your work not being "very cinematic". Remember what I wrote about the importance of suspension of disbelief? Digital has it's place, but not in Cinema. That's just my opinion, based on a lifetime of watching "movies" made with film that allowed me to forget I was even watching and completely absorb my mind as though I were actually there, an unforgettable dream like experience. In stark contrast, the raw chaffing feel of cam-corder reality TV offered by even "4K" is like waking from a sleep to an operating room of bright lights in your face with unfriendly zombie doctors staring at you, their next meal. It's like: film- soothing cozy dream about something pleasant, then suddenly...DIGITAL- the alarm goes off and it's back to the cold crappy world you were trying to escape by watching a movie in the first place.

    • @MRTOWELRACK
      @MRTOWELRACK 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ChesneyDigital And that's what I like about film. It definitely has a look to it that evokes certain feelings.

    • @MRTOWELRACK
      @MRTOWELRACK 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Trent Michael I understand what you're getting at. According to virtually all metrics, digital is better at achieving clarity, low light performance, and even metrics that film used to champion, like colour range. Film's power, so to speak, is largely based on the nostalgia surrounding it. With movies or shows, you're expecting a shared extent of knowledge (e.g. language, cultural references, history). Feelings of nostalgia fit into that realm which is where I think film is primarily successful at. Additionally, some filmmakers prefer film because they're accustomed to working with it and/or they find the process to be fun. At the end of the day, it is an artistic decision that imparts a distinctive look to a project.

    • @ChesneyDigital
      @ChesneyDigital 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Trent Michael You want to talk about fake and populist, youtubers like yourself getting in a violent tizzy about someone's opinion then using a channel with no content to hurdle insults at a total stranger. Where's your work? Where's your real page? No respect for trolls.

    Why just chang the cameras aspect to 4:3 instead of doing it in post?

    • @thedudezavcx5495
      @thedudezavcx5495 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to have a Canon 550D, I think the only high resolution video modes were 16:9. The maximum you could record with that camera in 4:3 was probably 640x480, and then he would have to upscale the video to properly render the effects like the grain and it would be a mess.

    • @masonmethot3186
      @masonmethot3186 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thedudez Avcx Sounds legit. I'll check my camera to see if what I'm preaching is even worth it.

    • @GraveUypo
      @GraveUypo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      upscaling really wouldn't matter much since he's blurring it by 4 pixels anyway, which gives the final footage lower perceived resolution than 640x480. it wouldn't look the same, but it wouldn't look wrong either.
