The San Vitale mosaics in Ravenna also use crimson lining for facial features, so you're in good company.

a great video but it may be te video but to be perfectly honest I cannot see any difference between highlights except for the step from the darkbrown to the basic skin colour and the ink wash.

It’s a mixture of a limitation of the equipment/lighting available and the later highlights being relatively subtle. The further along in the process the more the difference becomes more slight, that’s why I recommend adding or taking out steps to taste. My other videos and photos should show the difference between the end product and the initial stages more clearly. Hopefully the process is still useful.

many thanks, it wasn't a criticism just how my computer screen fails to distinguish the highlighting

Not at all, it is a bit indistinct in places. Helps me confirm things that I need to take into account in the future. The shifting daylight also contributed a little bit.

@@thelastbattalion3509 I think that was why artist's studios always tried to have north lighting as then the direction of the light would be constant

That’s why I recommend taking out or putting steps depending on what you want to achieve. I do vary techniques over time to try and make them a balance of efficiency vs result.
