That might work with smaller statues, but I tried that on a bigger one, and it looked deformed. I made my rubber mold with the stuff from Micheal's craft store. You brush it on and add gauze after every so many coats.
A really cool trick is to put the old on a pece of plywood. Thenhold a running palm sander on the plywood to vibrate the air bubbles out and get the cement into all the crevices....
FYI Cement is the fine gray powder. Add water it becomes slurry. Add any aggregate (sand, rocks, broken glass, perlite, etc) it is concrete. Spent my entire adult life working with this material, I find the need to make it clear. Thx.
The bunnies are so precious. This is so interesting. Wanted to do this in my younger years, 50 years ago. Now to old. But if I had a big property I would have these all around
Very helpful video. It gave me all of the information I needed to get started with this as a new retirement hobby. I had already done some basic reading on this, but it is much easier to fully understand with a video of someone actually doing it. I will start with some of the very small, basic and less expensive molds, then work up to more complex projects as I learn.
This video on how to make cement garden statues is so cool! 🤯 It's a fun and creative way to add a personal touch to our home or garden. 🏡 🪴 You can make a variety of shapes and sizes, and even paint them to match your décor. 🎨 I can't wait to try it! 🔨
This is definitely not a from scratch video, this assumes, a lot of forknowledge about fiberglass molds, mold, releases, and so on. I need an a to Z guide, I’m already lost in the first 60 seconds of the video. Yes I can understand what most of it is and does from context in common sense, but this is not a beginners guide or like an intermediate
A video showing how to make the *fibreglass support* would be very helpful as it seems from your guidance to be a fundamental part of a successful cement statue project. Have you made one of these videos, please?
A video of what you seek would be best but the process in words is 1. Make clay sculpture. 2. Make latex mould over the sculpture. 3. Make glass fibre jacket over the latex mould.
Do any of you actually listen to all the instructions before asking your questions? Most of your answers can be found by paying attention to what is said in the video. A quick google search can answer just about everything else.
If you have a tool such as electric sander, jig saw, etc (something that vibrates basically), remove the blade or anything sharp if it has one and hold that against the mold to remove air bubbles.
Wow, how rude! So many of the comments are derogatory. He’s just demonstrating what he does? He doesn’t have to share his technique with anyone, but he did! Give the guy a break 🙄

Thank you for this video! I’ve always wanted to do this, but I thought the moulds were really expensive, likely. Where do you find them at, please? Thank you!
Before i remove from the mold, I always let it cure at least 1 full day. If it is quite humid, I give it a day and a half up to two days to cure. Good luck with your statues.
Interesting video how long do the moulds last before they rip. I saw in a market here in Australia a few years back some of your selling Australian animals but the eyes, they had put coloured pebbles. It made the statues pop. Cheers Graham
The key to lasting is how well they are kept. They must be kept away from sunlight as it will ruin the latex. I get dozens of pours before the mould starts to break down. The mould will become sticky in areas and then will rip.
Mixing the cement is no brainer. My question is, where do you buy the molds? Or did you make the molds? That would be the hard part. TY for making this video though.
So : What’s the proportion of rubbing alcohol to castor oil? Where the heck do you get castor oil? How long do you let the concrete set before removing it from the mold?
I'm curious about your fiberglass moulds. Are they each made specifically to the silicon mould you made or just a generic form that holds the silicon? Your statues are wonderful :)
We call it a mother mold, it is the rigid mold us sculptors make around the rubber covered model. Sculpt something, cover it in coats of rubber, cover that in fiberglass or ultracal or something rigid, that's a simplification of the process. Advanced molds will have a flange of material along the seams where you think it might need to split a tad, usually a thin piece of plastic that got coated on both sides with the rubber, the fiberglass is added over that and holes drilled along the seam flange to slip a bolt and wingnut through for added precision of the mold holding it's shape. A thin coat of Vaseline makes a good release during the mold making process, whether it's rubber, fiberglass, plaster, etc, to keep parts of the mold from sticking to each other during creation. I learned this stuff 20years ago, they should teach it in schools.
By the time you can create a decent statue you’ll be SO sick of mixing and pouring… and then you’ll have a TON of one thing, or you’ll have spent a bunch of money on multiple molds. Either way, inventory management is a thing. Who wants 50 concrete rabbits in their backyard? How about 50 Medusas?? I promise you, all of your friends will ‘accidentally’ break theirs within months. Anybody who wants one will have already bought it at the local garden centre. They’re cheap and plentiful.
its there anything in the form of liquid that I can use the pour into a sculpture to make it softer and break down without the need of hammering down please anyone

Now that you have taught us how to do it ourselves we will not have to buy a garden of you again. So you might as well sell up your business thank you. For doing yourself out of business. 💡👍🏻
Fiberglass molds last much more longer then latex molds...if you're you're going to make a complicated mold with a lot of detail use silicone instead of latex.
Hey there. I would love to learn more about the concrete skull that you have there and maybe collaborate on a project with you. Would you be willing to chat sometime?
@@johnsonscorner7065 Excellent! I am interested in getting a mold for a large brain so I can make big concrete brains. Interested? If so, what is the best way to get in touch?
It is not necessary for the most part. Keep it out of direct sun to slow the curing. If the weather is hot and dry, spritzing with some water would be fine.
No, the mold release does not evaporate as quickly as plain rubbing alcohol. The castor oil is what makes it work. The alcohol serves to thin the oil. Always drain the mold well as any puddles of the release agent will affect the concrete. I spray the mold, tip it upside down to drain while I mix the concrete.
i do 3D PRINTING.. and with SO many failed prints i need a way to re-melt them and try to re use them.. if i make a cement model , can i use a BLOW TORCH on the CEMENT model so the PLA plastic material can melt around the cement model.. can the cement model be super heated with a blow torch without damaging the cement model ?
I’m not sure if you’re being facetious but mold is a casting mold, also spelled mould. It’s the form that you pour a medium into to make a shape. In this case it’s the silicon mold for the bunnies. The mold release is a thin layer of oil that keeps the concrete from sticking to the mold because oil won’t mix with the water in the concrete mix.
@scarlettsalazar4836 how do you make money with statues? By this I mean, say I took a iron man figurine made it life size and cement statue, would you get in trouble for using the small design? 🤔
@smallnuts2 generally if you only made few they'd leave you alone, sorta like a fair use art project type thing, now on the other hand if made a mold and was pumping them out for profit they'd shut you down and destroy the mold as it is copyright and trademark mark ip, and its owned by the mouse house who are notorious about copyright protection

Anyone can fill a mold with cement so your video doesn’t really teach much. You said almost anything you see can become a mold - how? How did you make the mold and fiberglass shell? I think the bucket of sand is a much better (easier) idea for maintaining the shape of the mold
No steps on making the mold, no steps on making the fiber glass stand, no showing the chemicals of chemical release, and no steps except for putting concrete in an existing mold and frame. #misleading
Wow, I don't expect one You Tube video to be a complete comprehensive lesson on everything about a subject. Knowing about molds would be a different lesson.
You are really using mortar, there is cement in that order but once you add sand to that cement, it is no longer cement. Put gravel in it and it will not even being mortar anymore, concrete now!
If you don’t have a custom fiberglass shell for the mold, you can put the latex mold in a bucket and put sand around the mold so that it can’t deform.
Thank you. This is what I was looking for.
That might work with smaller statues, but I tried that on a bigger one, and it looked deformed. I made my rubber mold with the stuff from Micheal's craft store. You brush it on and add gauze after every so many coats.
Easier said that done. Maybe for a small mold. A medium size mold you can use percolite. But sand and percolite take some experience.
A really cool trick is to put the old on a pece of plywood. Thenhold a running palm sander on the plywood to vibrate the air bubbles out and get the cement into all the crevices....
i was gonna mention using an old electric toothbrush...id bet they could be modified and adapted to get into tiny places
FYI
