Repairing Blade on a Caterpillar 140M Motor Grader | FCAW Welding

- This video is a job we did for repairing a blade on a Caterpillar 140M Motor Grader. The blade has started to wear through so we are fabricating, fitting and FCAW welding on a “skin” plate to the grader blade. First we need to cut to size the bisalloy plate using an oxy-lpg gas cutting torch. We then fit the skin to the grader blade, tack weld in place before welding the skin to the blade using flux cored (FCAW) wire. We also cut and weld on wear plates to the sides where the blade is prone to wearing out quicker. We finish it off with some hardfacing to the tops of the welds to give it a longer life.

Hey bro I'm a welding contractor here in NZ. Loving your vids and learning heaps mate. Here's a lesson from me, "Wear a freaking respirator bro...please!" I know they're shithouse, they give you a headache after you've been wearing them for an hour but you'll just live longer.

I'm no welder but I was thinking the same thing!
Ear protection when grinding is also key. I use mine all the time, they're worth it in the long run.
Respirator is a good idea when you're grinding too, especially if you are grinding tungsten carbide tools or (even worse!) thoriated tungsten TIG electrodes.

I have been in industrial maintenance and engineering for the past 50 years and have never come across a tradesman so talented and dedicated to his craft as you. Watching your videos and seeing how you are concerned for the quality of product you supply to your customers is admirable. Please keep the videos coming.

Indeed I do! I stopped watching Abom because he eventually quit making machines and fabrication videos and has turned into a look what I bought video maker. Rucker also does not make many machinist videos anymore, and his intro is a flag-waving advertisement.

My hat is off for Your "missus". I bet she already knows about Your work almost as much as You do. In order to get the video right You really need to know about the process You are trying to present.
I quess it's part of the video but I have found out that sound editing is also important. Metal workshop sound environment is quite harsh as there is a lot of dynamic around. Getting the angle grinder sound right, for example, is not a trip in the park. Good equipment helps but there is still quite some to do to make it right. I quess Your "missus" does the sound editing as well.

Awesome job. I own a small business in USA. Primary customers are rock quarry but not limited to just quarry. We use the XL525 wire alot. It is nice wire. We repair Caterpillar Equipment as well. I do more machine repairs, electrical, Hydraulics, engine, also own a machine shop mixed in with a parts store in which we purchase used equipment and rebuild components for resale. I can tell the 3 of you are very passionate about quality. From the work to the videos. Its hard for the younger generation to get a chance at a trade. I would rather hire a kid willing to learn. I share your vids with my employees. Thank you very much.
In more than 50 years of being around this kind of work its rare to see someone as skilled on both the machine work side and in welding/burning.. Combine this unusual skill with the motivation to take on the "dirty work" and you have a world class craftsman... If you'd like a skill test, stand on the blade, squat down, hold yourself steady with one hand, and put in a great weld, with one hand on the MIG torch, as we see in the video on the back of the blade... And then, in the next video, show you are a master of all the machine tools in the shop.. Can others do it.. Probably, but there aren't many who can and are willing to explain what they are doing.. Great video and it's fun to watch the dog... I almost never comment, but this is too good to miss the chance!! Thanks for sharing your skill!!!

I don't know how often you have to make long cuts on steel plate, but I have a circular saw made by Milwaukee that has an 8 inch carbide tip blade that makes cutting plate a dream. I don't use it very often, but everytime I do, I tell myself how glad I am that I bought it.
Those blades aren’t gonna be happy with that abrasion resistant 8mm steel, but in mild steel they’re great for sure. I’ve ruined a lot of blades learning these lessons.

All your videos are excellent. They've taught me so much and a time served toolmaker at 50 years old will definitely give you a thumbs up. Please though wear a mask when sanding off the rust. 👍
I was going to leave a comment about my favorite parts of your videos, but I can’t decide which of these is actually my favorite.
1. Homey, the safety officer. Fantastic part of all of your videos.
2. The outtakes. It takes humility, a good sense of humor, and strong self esteem to include these.
3. Using a welding helmet over the camera so we can see the welding process up close. As someone who has never even touched a welder in my life, it’s really cool to be able to see what is going on inside that bright light and shower of sparks.
Really enjoyed the video mate. I've never reskinned a maintainer blade. That wire looks like its a smooth as butter. I may need to look into it.

That really is some "cutting edge" work you did there. This brought back memories. My dad drove a motor grader as much as I can recall. There were always pieces and bits of grader blades around the house. We used the old steel plate for everything.

I keep getting flashbacks seeing this job from countless buckets and blades done in winter maintainance time. 👌job.
I have done a lot of repair panels on trash trucks. Trash is amazingly abrasive. The prep is cut out the old then tack in the repair panel followed by hours and hours of welding. I recommend always using a face shield when using a torch. I do but had a torch spin in my hand with it up and burned my nose pretty bad. I was looking at what to do next and it caught me by surprise. I have done some replacement curring edges on bobcat buckets as well. That was a nice looking repair on that grader blade.

I have also done lots of flux core welding. Most were with 0.0625" wire using CO2 gas. Those were 3 phase machines. I use Dual shield 7100 ultra in my personal mig, 0.045" also using co2 gas. it is a single phase unit. I have done some aluminum mig as well.
It's amazing how strong mig welds are, I did a bucket repair for a friend on a 22 ton excavator 2 years ago. We didnt have the materials for hard facing so ran the lines with just standard mig. 2 years of digging hard rock and granite and most of it's still there. Been good to see it after all this time has passed and to still see all the work I did is still holding strong.

You do some outstanding work Kurtis. I stumbled upon your channel by accident but it speaks to a lot of my interests. I really had no idea so many seemingly monolithic components were made of so many individual parts! The engineering on this stuff is amazing, and your knowledge of how it comes apart and goes back together is wicked impressive. Lots of people can run a bead and join two pieces of metal but you FABRICATE and that is awesome!

@@bradleywilliams2401 probably worse is the fiberglass or fibers that hold many grinding wheels together, I know in a shop that is dim and having sunlight coming in from a window you can really see there is a lot floating around. Stay safe Kurtis......

Interesting video and a well thought out procedure. I used to work in a steel mini-mill and we made a lot of the consumable blade edges for graders and the like, just another piece of the puzzle . Very well done video work as always. Cheers from Canada!

I've done quite a bit of steel-working/cutting/welding and more welding. Never, ever heard a guy say, "I like to grind..." Always a treat to see your channel in action..!
Loved the use of the toe clamps as work holding. For the top edge, or similar you could look at Kant twist clamps. You should be able to get the same pressures but not have the bar sticking out in your way.

Kurtis excellent video as we've become accustomed to viewing. You may wish to consider turning the oxygen to about 70psi when gas cutting that AR450 steel. The extra O2 will almost completely burn the AR away leaving very little or no dross to grind away. And to your viewers in the States, his primary welding wire is Hobart FabCO XL 525 which is what we would call a "Dual Shield" Low Hydrogen Flux wire equivalent to our e7018-1 H4R Rods...
Who else was waiting for the forklift forks to be bitten by the cutting torch ? 😈

I've rebuilt loader buckets and moboard skins and I always welded diamond shapes on the edge plates to trap a layer of dirt as it slides by to help with the wear. An old timer told me when I started that the diamonds held dirt and dirt on dirt wears longer than steel and dirt.
Hey Kurtis, Search up I C Weld on TH-cam. He is amazing with the oxy torch. He shows the big difference in the cut quality by pre-heating. The tips might save you a fair bit of grinding. Keep up the great work! Much better than some other machinists channels (eg KR) where it is 95% talk and 5% action.

@ Ron,,,,I was thinking the same thing both IC doing alot of jobs like this one and some guys who yak and yak and yak about a 5 min job. Watching most tubers, where is a fine line between too much info and not enough. Kurtis toes the line nicely.
They are using different cutting fuel gasses. So they have different characteristics.

I stopped using oxy ages ago. Best thing I ever bought was my Hypertherm.
Last Time I Used The Forks To Hold A Sheet Of Steel For Cutting I Cut Into The Forks. In A Hurry Not Thinking, Stupid Me. Love Your Videos.

Iron is good for you. Your body needs iron to transport oxygen through it. Iron is good.

@@imienazwisko7052 Pozwolę się nie zgodzić z Kolegą - po pierwsze, korund to tlenek glinu, Al2O3 (w postaci krystalicznej), a materiałem ściernym w ściernicach do "gumówek" jest węglik krzemu, SiC. Zwnay potocznie, acz niezbyt poprawnie "elektrokorundem" (a po angielsku "carbide" - od "silicon carbide").
Oraz, żelazo wchodzi w skład hemoglobiny, więc potrzebne jest nam i basta (bo bez niego jest bieda i anemia, prawdaż) - podczas gdy węglik krzemu w organiżmie potrzebny jest nam jak zęby w dupie, ew. jak psu piąta noga (no chyba że ktoś ma życzenie "pylica płuc" - a to w takim razie najmocniej przepraszam ;-)
Kwas cytrynowy i kwas askorbinowy (a.k.a. witamina C) zawarte w soku z cytryny rozpuszcają tlenki żelaza, podczas gdy wódka z węglikiem krzemu nijak reagować nie chce. Wierzaj mi, technik chemik coś wie o tym ;-)
And, oh, by the way - tamto to była ino aby taka podśmiechujka, o czym zaświadczała buźka ;-) na końcu.
