Warning: Long Post: Watching this clip, literally brought tears to my eyes and I’ll tell you why. Neil Diamond was my mother’s absolute favorite singer of all time. Growing up I think I heard every Neil Diamond album from beginning to end so many times I’ve lost count and not just because she was playing them but because I loved his music as well. To this day every time I hear one of his songs my childhood comes flooding back, her love for him comes flooding back.. Case in point: we had a bowling alley not far from our house that we all bowled at. I can remember that it took exactly one playing of Cracklin’ Rosie to get from our driveway to the bowling alley parking lot if we did not catch the traffic light. For some reason that song seemed to be playing on the radio just about every time we went to the bowling alley together, and we used to make a contest out of it. Anyway, I’m getting off track. The reason this clip brought tears to my eyes, is not necessarily of the song, but because of those memories. One of my most cherished memories is of the time took place in 1987 when I got to take my mom to a Neil Diamond concert. I remember the day the tickets were going on sale was the same day that Michael Jackson tickets were going on sale. In the mid-80s I used to work for a record store that had a BASS Ticket outlet so we often got first pick when tickets would go on sale (shhh, we weren’t supposed to do that. Don’t tell anyone). At that time I wasn’t working there anymore though and I was so anxious about how I was going to get tickets the first day they went on sale because I wanted to get the best seats. Luckily, I had a very good friend, who is still my friend to this day, break the rules and sneak me a couple of tickets before the massive mob of MJ fans came storming into the store. I came to the store shortly thereafter and the store was absolutely mobbed!!! , My friend came to the front of the store with the biggest smile on her face because she was able to get us two FRONT ROW seats to the show!!! Now fast forward to the day of the concert. My mom was so excited!!! The show was amazing and watching her during the show with the biggest smile on her face is, to this day, one of my fondest memories in my life. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen her as happy as she was at that moment. It was just pure joy!! Fast forward again from 1987 to 2016 when sadly, I lost my mother to cancer. A few days after she passed, I was going through her things and I came across a jewelry box of hers. This jewelry box had a little drawer at the bottom of it where, along with my father’s driver’s license (who had passed away 13 years prior) was the ticket stub for that show. My heart just exploded! Over the years I’ve had a lot of awesome concert experiences and because of some of the connections I had while working at the record store and fan club access I have had the opportunity to meet a few artists including my personal Idols Ann and Nancy Wilson. I’ve met them a total of seven times, and I have never been able to form a coherent sentence to them. But that night, watching her with such joy on her face, is a moment that surpasses even that. I’m sorry for rambling on but after watching your segments for a while now, hearing about how much music touched you growing up, I thought you and maybe even some of your followers might like to hear that story. I Loved Your story. My daughter Stacie took me to see BON JOVI, while she was at the University of Washington. Stacie passed away recently and I have that wonderful memory that makes me cry and smile when ever I hear BON JOVI.

Love Neil Diamond. He is one of my top 10-20 all-time favorites. I'm so glad you did another episode on him. It's been awhile. "Sweet Caroline" is a very special song to me. My mom and I were very close. Sadly, she died of cancer in 2001. My mom's name is Carolyn. She would always tell me that "Sweet Caroline" was her song. Back in the early 1990's, my favorite radio station, WCBS-Fm , was doing an all-request weekend. I told my mom that I was going to call and dedicate "Sweet Caroline" to her. She didn't believe I would be able to get through. I was determined. After an hour of busy signals, I finally got through to speak to one of their operators. I, then, told my mom that I got through and that her dedication would be played within the hour. So, my mom and I were listening to the radio and then the DJ, Dan Ingram, announces the dedication. He announces "Isn't this wonderful? This is from New Jersey. From Stephen to Mom, from Stephen to Mom (he said it twice). Then, Sweet Caroline played and we both sang along. It brings back great memories of my mom's favorite song. Even though she has been gone for over 20 years and I still miss her very much, to me, she will always be "Sweet Caroline".That was her song.
You forgot to mention that Neil wrote several songs for the Monkees! Whenever I hear “I’m a Believer “ I can hear Neil singing it! That song is completely his style!
He did. Neil was making money off songwriting during the 60s; he was one of the Brill Building songwriters that had Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry, and Neil Sedaka, which wrote songs for the Monkees first two albums at the behest of Don Kirschner. "Solitary Man" was the first time people heard of him; it was first released in 1966 and didn't chart well, but was rereleased in 1970 following his success with Sweet Caroline and his label move from Bang to UNI/MCA.
Correct Neil Diamond's first number one hit was not sung by him, he wrote "I'm a believer" for the Monkees and it went to number one.... I did a biography on Neil Diamond back in highschool many years ago ....

My father played bass guitar for Neil Diamond. “Shiloh”, “Solitary Man”, and “The Boat That I Row” has my father on bass guitar. He was Neil’s first choice to tour with him, but my dad turned him down because he didn’t want to live on the road.
Even if Neil's music isn't your style, it's hard to deny he has one of the most beautiful voices in the industry. He also wrote three of my favorite Monkees songs.

I almost agree with that. I would say the late 70s/early 80s was the best. That being said, my favorite Neil Diamond song is Longfellow Serenade from 74. I was 12.
I still play Neil for my mom who has dementia and it brings her right back every time. With a musician father we were surrounded by great music, but mom always played Neil so us kids also love Neil. Great artist, great episode professor!
My mom is a huge Diamond fan. Growing up through the 70’s and 80’s there wasn’t a weekend that went by that Neil wasn’t blasting on the stereo while mom cleaned and did laundry. He was the first live concert I ever went to and I’d seen him live a number of times before his retirement. He was an incredible live performer, a tremendous talent.
Neil Diamond was my first concert as a child. Now at the age of 51, I've seen him about 10 times in concert, and he never disappoints. When my son was 7 years old, Neil was his first concert. So glad he got to experience a master performer before he was forced to retire. Thank you Neil for all the memories you have brought to generations!
Neil Diamond is a genuine American treasure!! I remember seeing him in concert in the late 1980s in California and it was an utterly wonderful show!! It was a huge concert with > ten thousand in attendance. I was likely one of the youngest people there, everyone was having a GREAT time singing along to every song, no one was misbehaving and the memories are still vivid and cherished!
This song is really one of the fundamental touchstones of American rock music. Everyone, EVERYONE, starts moving when they hear that iconic opening. And everyone sings along at the chorus.

I'm sure you can't even walk into a bar in any town in this country (I would really say all countries, except in some alcohol is illegal), get the bartender to play this song, and you'd see nearly every head bobbing right away and everyone at least mouthing the words.
Bittersweet memories here. My mom loved him and i took her to 2 of his concerts, one in the 80s and in 2009. He's great and yes, everybody in 2009 sang the "extras" on Sweet Caroline. I lost her on Christmas eve of 2022. Also, Sweet Caroline was my husband's go to for karaoke. Mostly bc of the audience participation. I lost him in October 2023. But these songs make me smile. Thanks for this.

I didn't know this but I remember them on the song You Don't Bring Me Flowers. I saw Neil in New Orleans in summer of 1971, one of the happiest years of my life, ay Loyola of NO Fieldhouse. Back when artist toured to sell records, the tickets cost $5, & not gouge their fans..

A absolutely concur! I went looking for it, online, and could only find some "new'ish" reworked or remastered or fiddled-with version of it. I was, and am, pissed! I know every last nano second and sound of "Hot August Night" as it was originally released, and what I found during that online search was not it. Do you know anything about that?
@jafquist27 I had to digitalize one of my vinyl copies back in the day. Spotify has it with some additional songs that is good so I made a play list that exactly matches the album. I listen to Hot August Night frequently and probably like you know every song, word, phrase, pause , and musical lick.

My Mom absolutely loved Neil Diamond. Her, my aunt and I went to a concert in 2018 in Toronto, Ontario. It was so wonderful. The crowd sang along to all the songs and yet his voice was so strong he could be easily be heard. Sadly that fall he cancelled his remaining tour dates. So grateful to have had the opportunity to see him with my Mom and her sister ❤
Amazing how many of our mom’s loved him. 😊 He was definitely one of my mom’s favorite too. He cancelled the tour because of Parkinson’s right? Very sad.
Neil Diamond has been my favorite singer/songwriter since I first heard his music in the 60’s. What a voice; what a poet. Never heard a song of his that I didn’t enjoy! He’s the real deal!! My daughter and little granddaughter took me to see him in concert over 20 years ago for my birthday. What a showman! I was visiting them in Texas. What a special gift that was for me! Won’t ever forget it. It’s the only time I was able to see him in concert. I will pray for his health and we’ll-being! May God bless him always!!
Neil's generosity following the Boston Marathon bombing of 2013 reflects what a mensch he is, and I loved the "Hands washing hands" PSA video he released toward the beginning of the pandemic. He's a gem. 💎 Despite his having Parkinson's, he maintains his sense of humor. (He was hilarious in "Saving Silverman.") I hope the love and positive energy from millions of fans around the world (and-of course-that of his family and friends) help him deal with the challenges he is facing. The man is a legend, and even though he's an honorary Bostonian and lives in California, we New Yorkers consider him one of the best things to have originated in our city. 🗽
Thank you for mentioning the Hands Washing Hands PSA. I came here to make sure someone did. I had no idea he had Parkinson’s when I originally watched it. I hope that means it’s progressing slowly for him. He really is an American treasure.

I don't know how aggressively the Parkinsons has affected the man, the icon, but from what little I've seen, he seems to be dealing with it in good spirits. I think he's achieved a sort of Zen or stability at this point in his life, and he's always had a great sense of humor.
Oh, Sweet Caroline. My mother loved that song. In 2014 she was in her last hours at the hospice and her family including my adult daughter were at her bedside. My one sister was a nurse and we knew that one of the last things to go is hearing. So, my daughter pulled out her phone and played several of her favorite songs that were popular in the 70s. But, we played Sweet Caroline several times and even sung it around her bed. While she was unable to respond we knew she heard it and heard us because her face relaxed a little. Instead of tears she went with that song playing and her kids around her singing the chorus - somewhat quiet as not to disturb the other patients in the ward. And it was one of the songs played at her funeral. We did not play that draggy music. We had french songs - she was from France - and her favorite songs from the radio. Instead of the usual funeral fare instead we all got up and spoke of fond memories and funny stories. When everything was over we felt from the last hours through her funeral she had quite the send off and we knew an off beat service and music was more to her liking then the boring, droning and depressing service. Sweet Caroline will forever now be a sweet favorite for me -

I can't think of one bad song by Neil Diamond. One of my favorite alums is the soundtrack to Jonathan Livingston Seagull. The music is such a beautiful fit to the story that you feel like the magic has come alive.
I remember when that album came out & I would load it on my turn table, put my head set on & go to sleep listening to Neil sing out the songs. Great memories!
I saw Neil Diamond in concert at the Marriott Center on February 5, 1976 when I was a student at BYU. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. He was so personable with the crowd and such a nice person. I spent literally every single day of the entire 1969 summer swimming at my best friend's home pool. I'll never forget hearing Sweet Caroline on the radio every day, especially as I was half asleep laying out in the sun between dips in the pool. I was 15 and it was the summer before my freshman year in high school. After school started, I would find myself daydreaming in class, thinking of those wonderful summer days out by the pool listening to Sweet Caroline on the radio! It always brightens my day even now at the age of 69 when I think back of that time or hear the song on the radio. Thanks for the memories, Neil!
A couple of weeks ago I joined other mourners in singing Sweet Caroline In honor of the lovely elderly man and lifetime Red Sox fan who had passed away a few days before. The minister said it was the first time he'd ever led people in a funeral parlor in singing Neil's classic song. It reminded us of what a wonderful man we had lost and allowed us to celebrate his life and spirit.

Back in the early nineteen seventies, my mother would listen to Neil Diamond quite a bit. She turned me on to his great musical talent. My mother influenced me to admire quite a few musical artists. To include The Beatles, Elton John, and Barry Manilow. Thank you, Mom. RIP I love you!
I got invited to a Neil Diamond concert in the late 70's .. I was reluctant, I thought it was going to be all "we're coming to America" and "you don't bring me flowers" & whatever. But I went and it was THE BEST CONCERT EVER!!!! He just wandered out, climbed up on the piano & sang for over 2 hours .. songs you could sing along, songs you'd totally forgot he'd done ... he was hoarse by the end and finished with an encore of Sweet Caroline. Just Awesome.
Thanks so much for highlighting Neil Diamond. He has always been mesmerizing to me. His writing style, his stage style, his studio style - all amazing. And, through his willingness to thrust himself into awkward situations, he gained a wide fan base for himself. Neil is one of those rare artists that, even though Mega-Stardom, stayed true to his craft. His artwork was never about money or fame. It was only about expression. I got to see Neil Diamond during his 50th anniversary tour in 2017, before his diagnosis. At 76 years of age, he danced around that stage, singing his heart out, for 2 hours with no break. Then he took a 10 minute break and came back to sing for another half hour. Truly a magnificent performance, I’m blessed to have been able to see him still in his prime. He was my first “favorite musician” as a kid in the 60’s, his music is the backdrop of my formative years. ❤️💎

What a great video professor. As a kid my mom loved Neil Diamond and would play his albums all the time. I knew just about every word to every song. I was mostly into classic rock and 80's metal later on. One year my dad had bought my mom tickets to see his concert and I went too. One of the best shows i ever saw. He sounded fantastic!
It is a guilty pleasure to sing Sweet Caroline at a ball game. He really came into my consciousness in the early 80's at the time "The Jazz Singer" was on HBO. To this day "America" gives me goosebumps.
When I think of Neil Diamond, the song ''Heartlight'' comes to mind. It's my favorite from him. I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned as it charted rather well, #5 on the US Billboard Top 100.
Hi Jess, I know what you mean; it was on my commercial radio DJ playlist many times. There was also no reference to the #5 hit "Longfellow Serenade," but that didn't have the E.T. level connection of course.
One of your best, Adam! You mentioned several times how music transcends barriers and brings people together, something I believe. More proof of this is in his rendition of the Christmas classic, “Joy to the World” sung with a joyousness and reverence befitting such a song to Christians and Catholics. Neil, being raised in the Jewish faith and tradition, sang the song with such gusto…and nobody cared that it wasn’t celebrating his traditions. He stepped out of his cultural upbringing to put his heart into a Christmas song. If Neil Diamond’s music doesn’t touch your soul, then maybe one ought to question whether or not they’ve got one. Neil as a rare class act in a business sorely lacking class.
I ❤ Niel Diamond songs! My younger sister's name is Caroline. I adore Song Sung Blue. As a piano student, I learned the melody of this song is Mozart piano concert #21. Neil added the lyrics. My piano teacher when I was a kid was teaching me some Mozart songs, and I told her " This is a Neil Diamond song! She laughed and said "Mozart composed the melody.
Nice story, Catherine! His first name is spelled "Neil." "Song Sung Blue" was inspired by the second movement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Piano Concerto #21," not "Piano Concert #2." How do you like Altered Images' cover version of "Song Sung Blue"?
Neil’s songs can be so uplifting (holy Holy) and he is THE singer songwriter. Seen him live probably 5 times and even seen Super Diamond (tribute band -SO FUN!) 7 times. Hot August night first time I heard that album gave me chills. Professor - this was a GREAT tribute.
I saw Neil 3 times over the years with my Mother. She adored him and his music. When she started losing her memory it was rough. Even rougher through the Pandemic. During that time I made a playlist of Neil on my phone. To keep her from getting too bored I'd take her for a ride down a bunch of back in and around Tallahassee, Florida where we live. She loved hearing those songs, especially Sweet Caroline, I Am, I Said, and Soolaimon. She finally passed away in March this year. I still listen to that playlist now and again and think of her. Absolutely love Neil Diamond's music! We often had The Jazz Singer soundtrack playing on the turntable and about 10 years ago I finally saw the movie. I loved it as I loved the soundtrack.
The Jazz Singer is my favourite film, because it literally changed my life for the better! In November 1983, we started buying our first home. My husband suggested we wait 3 years before trying for a baby. After about a year, I felt broody, but felt I owed it to us, to be earning money towards the mortgage . (We both agreed I should leave my job if we had a baby.) The JS was on TV, in late December 1985. My husband noticed how I was gazing at the screen when 'Jess Robin' sees his baby son for the first time. That night was the first time we had sex without using any contraception. It took me just over a year to conceive - but our daughter was well worth the trying!

Any time I need reassurance that my mom and dad are watching over me from above...I pull out some Neil Diamond, Frank Sinatra, or Dean Martin...the voices and music just bring them back a little closer. I was born in 1955 and it just so happens my name is Caroline Rose and Neil Diamond and Gordon Lightfoot are my all-time favorite singer/songwriters. Because of the worldwide recognition of those names, I've been called Sweet Caroline and Cracklin' Rosie. The latter fits me the best 'cuz I truly am a "store-bought woman". Rock on, Mr. Diamond. Rock on....❤
Adam you've done it again. What a topic. Growing up my mother would play Done Too Soon and ask me to look up every name mentioned. The most difficult for me to find was Fannie Brice who is the second name Neil mentions. Once I found out about her I completely understood why Neil Diamond featured her in such a prominent position. It's an incredible song. Later Billy Joel would adopt the format in We Didn't Start the Fire but Done Too Soon was the original and still a tremendous listen

I attended a Neil Diamond concert in Memphis in the early 1970s. He was brilliant and did a great show. He explained to people with cameras that pictures with flash would not come out well and invited everyone that wanted to take pictures to come down near the stage and he would preform a couple of song for them to get good pictures and then no more flashbulbs. It was a great performance.

When I was in my first apartment after being thrown out of my parents house with my older brother and, for a reason I don't recall, we bought Taproot Manuscript and, since music has always had a profound emotional impact on me, I fell in platonic love with the guy. And, I got a new-found respect for Neil Diamond when I was watching The Last Waltz and The Band brought him on stage for Dry Your Eyes. MY eyes are all wet, now. What a TRUE SUPERSTAR he is!

I've been a fan since age 13 in 1964. My husband and I were able to see Neil Diamond in concert when he came to Oklahoma City. My on!y big name concert, it's been a favorite memory for years even though the exact year now escapes my mind (1978-1980?). Neil Diamond is the only artist whose work is represented in my music library in more than 3 albums.
i remember this story very well, my father was andrew t. hatcher...the associate press secretary for j.f.k.. my father knew quite a few celebs from back then and occasionally, he would tell me stories about some of the things he experienced while working for the president. sweet caroline was a true favorite of mine on a.m. radio in the late 60's into the mid 70's. one of my older brothers, avaery went to the whitehouse school with caroline and they were good friends. i often look back to those days and i thank you again for doing the stories that you do. young folks of today simply have no clue about the great old days. again thank you professor.
My daughter, born in 1990, was named after this song. At her wedding the DJ played Sweet Caroline and the dance floor was packed and everyone sang along. IT was awesome!
I love Neil Diamond. He’s just fantastic- I’m really bummed I never got to see him live. One of my favorite movies- Beautiful Girls- plays tribute to Sweet Caroline wonderfully. I can’t think of a better singalong. ❤
When I heard he was doing a tour of the UK, in 2017, I felt I just HAD to get to a gig : reasoning that because of his age - he would not be touring much longer. I bought tickets for a friend and myself, and we spent 4 days at a hotel, to make it a mini-break. If my friend had not wanted to go, I'd have happily gone by myself, as I don't regard company as a necessity for going to watch a show - or for that matter staying at a hotel.
I'm a high school teacher. Occasionally, usually during the first hour or fifth (after lunch), I'll spin one of my 70s CDs. Most kids, even in 2023, know enough to enjoy the tunes. But when I play the CD with "Sweet Caroline" I'll look up from my perch and see heads swaying and without fail they'll ask me to play it again. Music is the most potent toxic out there. He’s the best! He was my first ever concert in ‘92 with my parents . I saw him again in ‘05 with my parents. He’s definitely a bridge between myself and them, when we had little else musically in common.
Mom was a Child Protégé Pianist with a seriously infinite-seeming repertoire and though she loved many musicians and artists; she simply adored Neil Diamond's Song Sung Blue and Sweet Caroline...Can still hear her singing everywhere and playing Piano at every opportunity possible with or without harmonica. Thanks for this memory today...With Mother's Day coming it's wonderful to think of Mom now gone and always missed as my siblings and my Mom/BFF.
So weird thinking of Neil Diamond being in a street gang. It's inspirational to know one can overcome so much adversity. I saw him in concert once. When he performed "You Don't Bring Be Flowers," he had one of his backup singers do it with him, but he left her at her mic in the back and sang facing the audience, which I thought was weird and uncomfortable. He was up front singing facing the audience as usual, but he left his duet partner, one of his backup singers, in the back, not equally visible. I doubt he'd have done that if Barbra Streisand had joined him like she did on the recording.
Jill -- As a musician and performer for ~30 years, I can tell you that, well, sh*t happens on stage that you don't intend or don't realize in the moment. There are a hundred reasons a mistake like that could happen. You can bet he knew it was a mistake, and that it never happened again.
The rest of the story, Neil bought his plane ticket from Cali to Boston just to sing that song at Fenway, unannounced. Of course the Fenway brass were thrilled. Red Sox fans were unaware of this until he walked onto the field. Amazing gesture and great to hear that moment created millions donated by Neil. Neil's da man, no doubt about that
That's amazing that Neil was on the NCAA-winning fencing team! The best part of a Neil concert was when he'd sing "America" with a giant flag behind him. Definitely an icon with multitudes of classics, and too bad he's no longer touring. The good news is that there's a superlative Neil cover band called "Super Diamond" (featuring Surreal Neil on lead vox). I saw them in NYC (20 years ago last week, in fact!) and they were fantastic and even came out as their own opening band doing originals (Tijuana Strip Club is what they called themselves that night, I believe). Neil did not write "Sweet Caroline" after seeing a magazine with Caroline Kennedy on the cover. He has stated in numerous interviews that there never was a Caroline and that he simply needed a three syllable name. Then he gave a single interview where he stated that the song was about her and that was at the same time when she was considering running for office. He later recanted that statement.
I grew up in the 70s listening to Neil Diamond and I got to see him live at the Boston Garden and Sweet Caroline was always played at all the Red Sox games and probably still is

See, My Mom’s name was Caroline🙏, and my Pop would play this for her. Later on, myself would play this and” Concrete Blonde’s, Caroline, a favorite of mine. This guy is the BEST EVER, followed him since 1967, paid way to much (scalper) on occasion just to see him in concert. Was blessed to see him for his 50th (and sadly last) concert tour, my wife and kids allowed that happen.

Niel Diamond's double album Hot August Night was my introduction when I was in high school. I played it so many times that I got memorise every word and would used imagine myself on that Greek Theatre stage singing to the tree people and then used to sleep with my headphones on listening to my music hero. Now years later I still remember the words and listen to it as much as possible.
I knew as soon as you mentioned his fencing studies that it could only be about Neil Diamond. Neil was my first mainstream pop hero. I heard his first 3 80s albums when I was three years old and was then introduced to whole portions of his classic material. When I learned of his training as a swordsman, it emphasized how and why he recorded a piece in 1977 titled "Dance of the Sabers". Part of how I relate to his music has to do with my own roots; my own father was a Brooklyn Jew (who taught me my first guitar chords). Before I saw real pictures of him, I deluded myself into thinking he must look like my dad - which he doesn't. I grew up with the *Hot August Night* performance of "Sweet Caroline" at the Greek Theater. Something about it satisfies me more than any other, including the original or any of the other live captures with the singalong parts (which sprang up after I was a child).
My elementary school bus driver had a tape deck and played Neil Diamond almost every day. As a young kid it really wasn’t my favorite. But today I love his music. Such an icon.
I was in a casino recently when Sweet Caroline was playing. The looks I got when I let out a loud " BOM BOM BOM" were priceless. Even better, the next time it rolled around at least 20 other people joined in. Amazing how a casino in Quapaw OK. became the 7th inning stretch at Fenway Park in Boston.
My Nan loved Neil Diamond, when I was young I didn’t get it, wasn’t my kind of music but I’ve grown to love MANY of his songs, and every time I hear them now it reminds me of my Nan. His songs have a permanent place in my music library.

I was 12 years old on a trip to Hawaii with my family - My mom put a tape in a Cassette player on the plane ride told me to listen and be good - It was Neil Diamond I thought I was going to hate it cuz it wasn’t my kind of music - I was hooked and loved it
We went to Oktoberfest In Munich Germany in 2015 &2016 and they started playing Sweet Caroline ,hundreds of people were singing along in the Tent . was funny to me because I was just expecting Om-pah music .......this song and John Denver "take me home" fun times.

Warning: Long Post: Watching this clip, literally brought tears to my eyes and I’ll tell you why. Neil Diamond was my mother’s absolute favorite singer of all time. Growing up I think I heard every Neil Diamond album from beginning to end so many times I’ve lost count and not just because she was playing them but because I loved his music as well. To this day every time I hear one of his songs my childhood comes flooding back, her love for him comes flooding back.. Case in point: we had a bowling alley not far from our house that we all bowled at. I can remember that it took exactly one playing of Cracklin’ Rosie to get from our driveway to the bowling alley parking lot if we did not catch the traffic light. For some reason that song seemed to be playing on the radio just about every time we went to the bowling alley together, and we used to make a contest out of it.
Anyway, I’m getting off track.
The reason this clip brought tears to my eyes, is not necessarily of the song, but because of those memories. One of my most cherished memories is of the time took place in 1987 when I got to take my mom to a Neil Diamond concert. I remember the day the tickets were going on sale was the same day that Michael Jackson tickets were going on sale. In the mid-80s I used to work for a record store that had a BASS Ticket outlet so we often got first pick when tickets would go on sale (shhh, we weren’t supposed to do that. Don’t tell anyone). At that time I wasn’t working there anymore though and I was so anxious about how I was going to get tickets the first day they went on sale because I wanted to get the best seats. Luckily, I had a very good friend, who is still my friend to this day, break the rules and sneak me a couple of tickets before the massive mob of MJ fans came storming into the store. I came to the store shortly thereafter and the store was absolutely mobbed!!! , My friend came to the front of the store with the biggest smile on her face because she was able to get us two FRONT ROW seats to the show!!! Now fast forward to the day of the concert. My mom was so excited!!! The show was amazing and watching her during the show with the biggest smile on her face is, to this day, one of my fondest memories in my life. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen her as happy as she was at that moment. It was just pure joy!! Fast forward again from 1987 to 2016 when sadly, I lost my mother to cancer. A few days after she passed, I was going through her things and I came across a jewelry box of hers. This jewelry box had a little drawer at the bottom of it where, along with my father’s driver’s license (who had passed away 13 years prior) was the ticket stub for that show. My heart just exploded! Over the years I’ve had a lot of awesome concert experiences and because of some of the connections I had while working at the record store and fan club access I have had the opportunity to meet a few artists including my personal Idols Ann and Nancy Wilson. I’ve met them a total of seven times, and I have never been able to form a coherent sentence to them. But that night, watching her with such joy on her face, is a moment that surpasses even that.
I’m sorry for rambling on but after watching your segments for a while now, hearing about how much music touched you growing up, I thought you and maybe even some of your followers might like to hear that story.

Love Neil Diamond. He is one of my top 10-20 all-time favorites. I'm so glad you did another episode on him. It's been awhile. "Sweet Caroline" is a very special song to me. My mom and I were very close. Sadly, she died of cancer in 2001. My mom's name is Carolyn. She would always tell me that "Sweet Caroline" was her song. Back in the early 1990's, my favorite radio station, WCBS-Fm , was doing an all-request weekend. I told my mom that I was going to call and dedicate "Sweet Caroline" to her. She didn't believe I would be able to get through. I was determined. After an hour of busy signals, I finally got through to speak to one of their operators. I, then, told my mom that I got through and that her dedication would be played within the hour. So, my mom and I were listening to the radio and then the DJ, Dan Ingram, announces the dedication. He announces "Isn't this wonderful? This is from New Jersey. From Stephen to Mom, from Stephen to Mom (he said it twice). Then, Sweet Caroline played and we both sang along. It brings back great memories of my mom's favorite song. Even though she has been gone for over 20 years and I still miss her very much, to me, she will always be "Sweet Caroline".That was her song.

You forgot to mention that Neil wrote several songs for the Monkees! Whenever I hear “I’m a Believer “ I can hear Neil singing it! That song is completely his style!
He did. Neil was making money off songwriting during the 60s; he was one of the Brill Building songwriters that had Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry, and Neil Sedaka, which wrote songs for the Monkees first two albums at the behest of Don Kirschner. "Solitary Man" was the first time people heard of him; it was first released in 1966 and didn't chart well, but was rereleased in 1970 following his success with Sweet Caroline and his label move from Bang to UNI/MCA.
Correct Neil Diamond's first number one hit was not sung by him, he wrote "I'm a believer" for the Monkees and it went to number one.... I did a biography on Neil Diamond back in highschool many years ago ....

My father played bass guitar for Neil Diamond. “Shiloh”, “Solitary Man”, and “The Boat That I Row” has my father on bass guitar. He was Neil’s first choice to tour with him, but my dad turned him down because he didn’t want to live on the road.
Your dad missed a big opportunity, but made the right decision. Life on the road is Tough(!) and anything but glamorous.
Even if Neil's music isn't your style, it's hard to deny he has one of the most beautiful voices in the industry. He also wrote three of my favorite Monkees songs.

My mom is a huge Diamond fan. Growing up through the 70’s and 80’s there wasn’t a weekend that went by that Neil wasn’t blasting on the stereo while mom cleaned and did laundry. He was the first live concert I ever went to and I’d seen him live a number of times before his retirement. He was an incredible live performer, a tremendous talent.
Neil Diamond was my first concert as a child. Now at the age of 51, I've seen him about 10 times in concert, and he never disappoints. When my son was 7 years old, Neil was his first concert. So glad he got to experience a master performer before he was forced to retire. Thank you Neil for all the memories you have brought to generations!
Neil Diamond is a genuine American treasure!! I remember seeing him in concert in the late 1980s in California and it was an utterly wonderful show!! It was a huge concert with > ten thousand in attendance. I was likely one of the youngest people there, everyone was having a GREAT time singing along to every song, no one was misbehaving and the memories are still vivid and cherished!
This song is really one of the fundamental touchstones of American rock music. Everyone, EVERYONE, starts moving when they hear that iconic opening. And everyone sings along at the chorus.

Bittersweet memories here. My mom loved him and i took her to 2 of his concerts, one in the 80s and in 2009. He's great and yes, everybody in 2009 sang the "extras" on Sweet Caroline. I lost her on Christmas eve of 2022.
Also, Sweet Caroline was my husband's go to for karaoke. Mostly bc of the audience participation. I lost him in October 2023.
But these songs make me smile. Thanks for this.

A absolutely concur! I went looking for it, online, and could only find some "new'ish" reworked or remastered or fiddled-with version of it. I was, and am, pissed! I know every last nano second and sound of "Hot August Night" as it was originally released, and what I found during that online search was not it.

@jafquist27 I had to digitalize one of my vinyl copies back in the day. Spotify has it with some additional songs that is good so I made a play list that exactly matches the album. I listen to Hot August Night frequently and probably like you know every song, word, phrase, pause , and musical lick.

My Mom absolutely loved Neil Diamond. Her, my aunt and I went to a concert in 2018 in Toronto, Ontario. It was so wonderful. The crowd sang along to all the songs and yet his voice was so strong he could be easily be heard. Sadly that fall he cancelled his remaining tour dates. So grateful to have had the opportunity to see him with my Mom and her sister ❤

Neil Diamond has been my favorite singer/songwriter since I first heard his music in the 60’s. What a voice; what a poet. Never heard a song of his that I didn’t enjoy! He’s the real deal!! My daughter and little granddaughter took me to see him in concert over 20 years ago for my birthday. What a showman! I was visiting them in Texas. What a special gift that was for me! Won’t ever forget it. It’s the only time I was able to see him in concert. I will pray for his health and we’ll-being! May God bless him always!!

Neil's generosity following the Boston Marathon bombing of 2013 reflects what a mensch he is, and I loved the "Hands washing hands" PSA video he released toward the beginning of the pandemic. He's a gem. 💎 Despite his having Parkinson's, he maintains his sense of humor. (He was hilarious in "Saving Silverman.") I hope the love and positive energy from millions of fans around the world (and-of course-that of his family and friends) help him deal with the challenges he is facing. The man is a legend, and even though he's an honorary Bostonian and lives in California, we New Yorkers consider him one of the best things to have originated in our city. 🗽

I don't know how aggressively the Parkinsons has affected the man, the icon, but from what little I've seen, he seems to be dealing with it in good spirits. I think he's achieved a sort of Zen or stability at this point in his life, and he's always had a great sense of humor.

In 2014 she was in her last hours at the hospice and her family including my adult daughter were at her bedside. My one sister was a nurse and we knew that one of the last things to go is hearing. So, my daughter pulled out her phone and played several of her favorite songs that were popular in the 70s. But, we played Sweet Caroline several times and even sung it around her bed.
While she was unable to respond we knew she heard it and heard us because her face relaxed a little.
Instead of tears she went with that song playing and her kids around her singing the chorus - somewhat quiet as not to disturb the other patients in the ward.
And it was one of the songs played at her funeral. We did not play that draggy music. We had french songs - she was from France - and her favorite songs from the radio. Instead of the usual funeral fare instead we all got up and spoke of fond memories and funny stories.
When everything was over we felt from the last hours through her funeral she had quite the send off and we knew an off beat service and music was more to her liking then the boring, droning and depressing service.
Sweet Caroline will forever now be a sweet favorite for me -

I can't think of one bad song by Neil Diamond. One of my favorite alums is the soundtrack to Jonathan Livingston Seagull. The music is such a beautiful fit to the story that you feel like the magic has come alive.
I remember when that album came out & I would load it on my turn table, put my head set on & go to sleep listening to Neil sing out the songs. Great memories!
I had that one. I was like 11 when the movie came out and I was obsessed with it.
I play it almost every Sunday to this day. That album is so heartfelt and amazing. It transformed my life as a teenager.

I saw Neil Diamond in concert at the Marriott Center on February 5, 1976 when I was a student at BYU. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. He was so personable with the crowd and such a nice person. I spent literally every single day of the entire 1969 summer swimming at my best friend's home pool. I'll never forget hearing Sweet Caroline on the radio every day, especially as I was half asleep laying out in the sun between dips in the pool. I was 15 and it was the summer before my freshman year in high school. After school started, I would find myself daydreaming in class, thinking of those wonderful summer days out by the pool listening to Sweet Caroline on the radio! It always brightens my day even now at the age of 69 when I think back of that time or hear the song on the radio. Thanks for the memories, Neil!
A couple of weeks ago I joined other mourners in singing Sweet Caroline In honor of the lovely elderly man and lifetime Red Sox fan who had passed away a few days before. The minister said it was the first time he'd ever led people in a funeral parlor in singing Neil's classic song. It reminded us of what a wonderful man we had lost and allowed us to celebrate his life and spirit.
I was collecting Neil's albums as a teenager and only learned who Sweet Caroline was today! I loved Neils the backstory also! Thanks, Professor!

I got invited to a Neil Diamond concert in the late 70's .. I was reluctant, I thought it was going to be all "we're coming to America" and "you don't bring me flowers" & whatever. But I went and it was THE BEST CONCERT EVER!!!! He just wandered out, climbed up on the piano & sang for over 2 hours .. songs you could sing along, songs you'd totally forgot he'd done ... he was hoarse by the end and finished with an encore of Sweet Caroline. Just Awesome.
Thanks so much for highlighting Neil Diamond. He has always been mesmerizing to me. His writing style, his stage style, his studio style - all amazing. And, through his willingness to thrust himself into awkward situations, he gained a wide fan base for himself. Neil is one of those rare artists that, even though Mega-Stardom, stayed true to his craft. His artwork was never about money or fame. It was only about expression. I got to see Neil Diamond during his 50th anniversary tour in 2017, before his diagnosis. At 76 years of age, he danced around that stage, singing his heart out, for 2 hours with no break. Then he took a 10 minute break and came back to sing for another half hour. Truly a magnificent performance, I’m blessed to have been able to see him still in his prime. He was my first “favorite musician” as a kid in the 60’s, his music is the backdrop of my formative years. ❤️💎

What a great video professor. As a kid my mom loved Neil Diamond and would play his albums all the time. I knew just about every word to every song. I was mostly into classic rock and 80's metal later on. One year my dad had bought my mom tickets to see his concert and I went too. One of the best shows i ever saw. He sounded fantastic!

He really came into my consciousness in the early 80's at the time "The Jazz Singer" was on HBO. To this day "America" gives me goosebumps.
When I think of Neil Diamond, the song ''Heartlight'' comes to mind. It's my favorite from him. I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned as it charted rather well, #5 on the US Billboard Top 100.

One of your best, Adam! You mentioned several times how music transcends barriers and brings people together, something I believe. More proof of this is in his rendition of the Christmas classic, “Joy to the World” sung with a joyousness and reverence befitting such a song to Christians and Catholics. Neil, being raised in the Jewish faith and tradition, sang the song with such gusto…and nobody cared that it wasn’t celebrating his traditions. He stepped out of his cultural upbringing to put his heart into a Christmas song.
If Neil Diamond’s music doesn’t touch your soul, then maybe one ought to question whether or not they’ve got one. Neil as a rare class act in a business sorely lacking class.

I adore Song Sung Blue. As a piano student, I learned the melody of this song is Mozart piano concert #21. Neil added the lyrics. My piano teacher when I was a kid was teaching me some Mozart songs, and I told her " This is a Neil Diamond song! She laughed and said "Mozart composed the melody.

I have always loved Neil Diamond. His music touches every fiber of my being.
Neil’s songs can be so uplifting (holy Holy) and he is THE singer songwriter. Seen him live probably 5 times and even seen Super Diamond (tribute band -SO FUN!) 7 times. Hot August night first time I heard that album gave me chills. Professor - this was a GREAT tribute.
Holly Holy is my favorite song by him.
I saw Neil 3 times over the years with my Mother. She adored him and his music. When she started losing her memory it was rough. Even rougher through the Pandemic. During that time I made a playlist of Neil on my phone. To keep her from getting too bored I'd take her for a ride down a bunch of back in and around Tallahassee, Florida where we live. She loved hearing those songs, especially Sweet Caroline, I Am, I Said, and Soolaimon. She finally passed away in March this year. I still listen to that playlist now and again and think of her. Absolutely love Neil Diamond's music! We often had The Jazz Singer soundtrack playing on the turntable and about 10 years ago I finally saw the movie. I loved it as I loved the soundtrack.
The Jazz Singer is my favourite film, because it literally changed my life for the better! In November 1983, we started buying our first home. My husband suggested we wait 3 years before trying for a baby. After about a year, I felt broody, but felt I owed it to us, to be earning money towards the mortgage . (We both agreed I should leave my job if we had a baby.) The JS was on TV, in late December 1985. My husband noticed how I was gazing at the screen when 'Jess Robin' sees his baby son for the first time. That night was the first time we had sex without using any contraception. It took me just over a year to conceive - but our daughter was well worth the trying!
“Brooklyn Roads” and “Once in a While” are not often played but are two of my absolute favorites!
Brooklyn Roads is a masterpiece. It always stops me dead in my tracks and transports me to my room (in Detroit) 60 years ago.

I was born in 1955 and it just so happens my name is Caroline Rose and Neil Diamond and Gordon Lightfoot are my all-time favorite singer/songwriters. Because of the worldwide recognition of those names, I've been called Sweet Caroline and Cracklin' Rosie. The latter fits me the best 'cuz I truly am a "store-bought woman".

Adam you've done it again. What a topic. Growing up my mother would play Done Too Soon and ask me to look up every name mentioned. The most difficult for me to find was Fannie Brice who is the second name Neil mentions. Once I found out about her I completely understood why Neil Diamond featured her in such a prominent position. It's an incredible song. Later Billy Joel would adopt the format in We Didn't Start the Fire but Done Too Soon was the original and still a tremendous listen

One of the greatest songs by one of the greatest songwriters of all time! I saw Neil in concert for the very first time in 2012, and he was absolutely incredible... one of the best concerts I've seen!!!
I attended a Neil Diamond concert in Memphis in the early 1970s. He was brilliant and did a great show. He explained to people with cameras that pictures with flash would not come out well and invited everyone that wanted to take pictures to come down near the stage and he would preform a couple of song for them to get good pictures and then no more flashbulbs. It was a great performance.

When I was in my first apartment after being thrown out of my parents house with my older brother and, for a reason I don't recall, we bought Taproot Manuscript and, since music has always had a profound emotional impact on me, I fell in platonic love with the guy. And, I got a new-found respect for Neil Diamond when I was watching The Last Waltz and The Band brought him on stage for Dry Your Eyes. MY eyes are all wet, now. What a TRUE SUPERSTAR he is!
Love Neil Diamond, so many great sing along songs and one of the best live albums of all time in Hot August Night. He is regularly on my playlist and never fails to brighten my mood if I need it. I woould have to say Neil diamond, Billy Joel and Bob Seger are an iconic American trio of singer/songwriters and I love them all.

I've been a fan since age 13 in 1964. My husband and I were able to see Neil Diamond in concert when he came to Oklahoma City. My on!y big name concert, it's been a favorite memory for years even though the exact year now escapes my mind (1978-1980?). Neil Diamond is the only artist whose work is represented in my music library in more than 3 albums.

I love Neil Diamond. He’s just fantastic- I’m really bummed I never got to see him live. One of my favorite movies- Beautiful Girls- plays tribute to Sweet Caroline wonderfully. I can’t think of a better singalong. ❤
When I heard he was doing a tour of the UK, in 2017, I felt I just HAD to get to a gig : reasoning that because of his age - he would not be touring much longer. I bought tickets for a friend and myself, and we spent 4 days at a hotel, to make it a mini-break. If my friend had not wanted to go, I'd have happily gone by myself, as I don't regard company as a necessity for going to watch a show - or for that matter staying at a hotel.
I'm a high school teacher. Occasionally, usually during the first hour or fifth (after lunch), I'll spin one of my 70s CDs. Most kids, even in 2023, know enough to enjoy the tunes. But when I play the CD with "Sweet Caroline" I'll look up from my perch and see heads swaying and without fail they'll ask me to play it again. Music is the most potent toxic out there. Love your show.
He’s the best! He was my first ever concert in ‘92 with my parents . I saw him again in ‘05 with my parents. He’s definitely a bridge between myself and them, when we had little else musically in common.
Mom was a Child Protégé Pianist with a seriously infinite-seeming repertoire and though she loved many musicians and artists; she simply adored Neil Diamond's Song Sung Blue and Sweet Caroline...Can still hear her singing everywhere and playing Piano at every opportunity possible with or without harmonica. Thanks for this memory today...With Mother's Day coming it's wonderful to think of Mom now gone and always missed as my siblings and my Mom/BFF.
So weird thinking of Neil Diamond being in a street gang. It's inspirational to know one can overcome so much adversity. I saw him in concert once. When he performed "You Don't Bring Be Flowers," he had one of his backup singers do it with him, but he left her at her mic in the back and sang facing the audience, which I thought was weird and uncomfortable. His music is iconic though, that's for sure, and I'm glad I got to see him. Thanks for telling his back story, Adam. Have a great day.

He was up front singing facing the audience as usual, but he left his duet partner, one of his backup singers, in the back, not equally visible. I doubt he'd have done that if Barbra Streisand had joined him like she did on the recording.

Jill -- As a musician and performer for ~30 years, I can tell you that, well, sh*t happens on stage that you don't intend or don't realize in the moment. There are a hundred reasons a mistake like that could happen. You can bet he knew it was a mistake, and that it never happened again.
The rest of the story, Neil bought his plane ticket from Cali to Boston just to sing that song at Fenway, unannounced. Of course the Fenway brass were thrilled. Red Sox fans were unaware of this until he walked onto the field. Amazing gesture and great to hear that moment created millions donated by Neil. Neil's da man, no doubt about that
That's amazing that Neil was on the NCAA-winning fencing team! The best part of a Neil concert was when he'd sing "America" with a giant flag behind him. Definitely an icon with multitudes of classics, and too bad he's no longer touring. The good news is that there's a superlative Neil cover band called "Super Diamond" (featuring Surreal Neil on lead vox). I saw them in NYC (20 years ago last week, in fact!) and they were fantastic and even came out as their own opening band doing originals (Tijuana Strip Club is what they called themselves that night, I believe). Neil is definitely a unique spirit who had a special salvation show. Have a good one! - Dave

My dad was a huge Neil Diamond fan so l grew up hearing all his records and went to several N.D. concerts.. They were always great.
Neil did not write "Sweet Caroline" after seeing a magazine with Caroline Kennedy on the cover. He has stated in numerous interviews that there never was a Caroline and that he simply needed a three syllable name. Then he gave a single interview where he stated that the song was about her and that was at the same time when she was considering running for office. He later recanted that statement.
I'm glad to hear this. Remembering the lyrics, I was creeping out a little at the thought.

As a kid, with our Stromberg Hi Fi in the living room, Sweet Caroline and all of Neil’s songs and albums were stacked and played on the trurntable. See, My Mom’s name was Caroline🙏, and my Pop would play this for her. Later on, myself would play this and” Concrete Blonde’s, Caroline, a favorite of mine. My Mom and Dad have passed, but Sweet Caroline will live in my collection and in my heart and mind forever.🙏🙏🙏

This guy is the BEST EVER, followed him since 1967, paid way to much (scalper) on occasion just to see him in concert. Was blessed to see him for his 50th (and sadly last) concert tour, my wife and kids allowed that happen.
So I went to look this up. Neil was 9th on the list of all time albums sold by a male artist, just behind Eminem at 8th and in front of Kenny Rogers at 10th. That's amazing!

Niel Diamond's double album Hot August Night was my introduction when I was in high school. I played it so many times that I got memorise every word and would used imagine myself on that Greek Theatre stage singing to the tree people and then used to sleep with my headphones on listening to my music hero. Now years later I still remember the words and listen to it as much as possible.
Still have my 45 of "Thank The Lord For The Nighttime". Was in first year high school, heard it on the radio and soon ran out to buy it.
I knew as soon as you mentioned his fencing studies that it could only be about Neil Diamond. Neil was my first mainstream pop hero. I heard his first 3 80s albums when I was three years old and was then introduced to whole portions of his classic material. When I learned of his training as a swordsman, it emphasized how and why he recorded a piece in 1977 titled "Dance of the Sabers".
Part of how I relate to his music has to do with my own roots; my own father was a Brooklyn Jew (who taught me my first guitar chords). Before I saw real pictures of him, I deluded myself into thinking he must look like my dad - which he doesn't.
I grew up with the *Hot August Night* performance of "Sweet Caroline" at the Greek Theater. Something about it satisfies me more than any other, including the original or any of the other live captures with the singalong parts (which sprang up after I was a child).

I was in a casino recently when Sweet Caroline was playing. The looks I got when I let out a loud " BOM BOM BOM" were priceless. Even better, the next time it rolled around at least 20 other people joined in. Amazing how a casino in Quapaw OK. became the 7th inning stretch at Fenway Park in Boston.
My Nan loved Neil Diamond, when I was young I didn’t get it, wasn’t my kind of music but I’ve grown to love MANY of his songs, and every time I hear them now it reminds me of my Nan. His songs have a permanent place in my music library.

I was 12 years old on a trip to Hawaii with my family - My mom put a tape in a Cassette player on the plane ride told me to listen and be good - It was Neil Diamond I thought I was going to hate it cuz it wasn’t my kind of music - I was hooked and loved it
We went to Oktoberfest In Munich Germany in 2015 &2016 and they started playing Sweet Caroline ,hundreds of people were singing along in the Tent .
was funny to me because I was just expecting Om-pah music .......this song and John Denver "take me home" fun times.
Oktoberfest is definitely on my bucket list of things to explore before I die.

I didn’t know much about his life, other that he’s from Brooklyn. I like his songs, but “coming to America” is my absolute favorite & gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it, decades later. Good video. He’s a gem. Wish I’d have gotten the opportunity to see him in concert.
