- What a day. A huge 8hr drive to Detectival in the south of England, van breaks down.
Marty Pete and I all get hammered silver in the morning session.
I spend three hours arranging a mechanic to come out and the van needs to be towed all the way back to Scotland…. 450miles! …. Then it’s back out for the last three hours of the day and not only do I get an amazing silver medieval hammered but also an EPIC gold hammered too!!

I got next to Naff all but had good info but plans did not work out and then I got tired. Next year I will have a different approach. Lovely to see your finds coming up. The majority found next to nothing but there were some very nice finds I saw out on the fields and quite a few roman coins and at least 3 brooches. Rings too. 👍👍👍👍👍

What an Incredibley Emotional day ? Broken van....followed by the sixpence, a thruppennybit.....a silver 800 year old coin...then....BOOM ! a Gold stamped coin that looked liked it was lost yesterday?? Then to Top it All off .....a Good Angel flyby by of all things....a Spitfire ?? You Sir, walk in Blessed fields of Valor and unimaginable History ! Thankyou for bringing it back from where it was hidden, for all others to see ! P.S i had a thruppenybit beneath the mast of my old girl....french sailor from 1948....she sank the year before COVID Fiasco....to see that coin almost made me cry i can tell you ! Could you consider a reasonable offer for it from an Old Salt like me ?? The date of it is also of Great significance to me ...but cannot say here ??

That gold is amazing. It really sucks about your van, and the towing expenses, but it's like the world said 'it's ok, I got you fam' and gave you a gold coin to pay for it. Brilliant dig. 👍

It was hard to celebrate because I had that horrible feeling of dread hanging over me of how I get home and how I get to work, but all turned out well in the end!
Brilliant stuff John. You guys had a blinding session on the fields. Definitely put me to shame as finds weren't so good. Think I'll go myself next year and maybe go further than the 1st 2 fields without having to constantly remove my headphones to see what my brother wants this time 🤪 I even had to give him my water as he drank his 2 litres in the 1st hour 😄 Oh dear. Was nice to pass you on the Saturday, albeit by your broken van. Hope it didn't cost too much. Thank you for all the great videos. Top man 😉

I happen to know that gold coin was inadvertently dropped, by one of my English ancestors.(Probably fleeing the scene of the crime, after he purloined a small cache of coins, from an undeserving landowner, who'd gave him the excuse,he [landowner] didn't have "exact change on his person"). It (the aforementioned gold coin) was described,in exacting detail, in a note I found secreted behind an old painting, in the attic. He said the coin had no monarch on the obverse, & as he was, making his "egress" across that VERY field, that particular coin, slipped through a hole in his handkerchief. If that's not enough proof, I can come up with several more descriptions. Honestly, VERY happy for you. I'd wager to say, you're the Detectival Midas.(not the auto muffler/brake business here in the States. Who some how determine a simple brake pad replacement, requires an additional $1000 worth of work, or they CAN'T LEGALLY replace the brake pads, on your vehicle!!!) Congratulations!!!! Very happy for you.

Of course the vehicle problems, are a real "pisser".I've got a tip for you, my 2000 Chevy Cavalier lost her "Universal belt" & one of the "tensioners"(if thats the proper name). I bought a new belt & tensioner, (had to manufacture a part for the tensioner. But made a better part than the plastic insert it was missing. The Most important part,BTW) All in all $80 for the parts. Didn't know how to snake the belt through the various apparati on the engine. Searched the internet, found the configuration, did it with the help of a friend who slipped the belt over the alternator/generator pulley.) I've found how to replace several items on YT
, over the years. If you're the least bit mechanically inclined you can fix it yourself. I miss the older motors, easy access to everything. These newer sideways engines, especially in smaller vehicles is for the birds. Hope your repairs do not cost you the value of that Quarter Noble. Good luck with your vehicle. Haha, I know, but cliched! I almost thought of cutting that bit out but I’m sure everyone thought the same when they saw it
New tensioner and aux belt required. Make sure all the other pulleys get checked thoroughly especially the alternator pulley as it is a one way clutch pulley and often is the result of a failed auxiliary belt on many VW and Audi type cars. Hope you get it sorted 👍

great find .. beautiful condition .. will look better when cleaned up.. I'm sure ... just wondering , couldn't a local garage or dealer fit a new belt? I mean it's not like a clutch or head gasket.. should be routine .. service type job ...
Because it was a Saturday then everything closed on the Sunday they couldn’t get a space on the Monday and I needed it for work Tuesday, so they decided to recover it to my local garage and he fixed it by lunchtime Monday and she was good to go for work on Tuesday 🤩

Congratulations John! I’m wondering if you could explain the process of reporting to the “finds liaison” is this someone who inspects what you found on the spot? Do you get to keep your finds?
Hi Katherine. Sorry for the slow reply. At Detectival they had a Finds Liason on site who looks at anything interesting and decides if it should be recorded or photographed. Anything which is recorded, such as my gold coin, was then given back to the finder to keep!
In Scotland it is a very different system. Finds over 300yrs old must be reported to Treasure Trove based on Edinburgh.
They then decide if the item should be claimed as ‘treasure’. If it is claimed then a valuation is given and the finder is paid a market value and the item goes to a museum.
On contrast to Englands system, Scotlands system is very poor and incredibly slow, even before the excuse of covid.
Anything handed in to Treasure Trove in Scotland is taking in excess of two years to be reviewed speaking with others and Martyn who found a gold noble a while back is eight months into the process and hasn’t even had a single email to update him on anything even an identification.
A real shame!

Sorry you are so sore about Detectival 2022. I know it’s tough to take when people do better than you but that’s life. You can just be happy for us without all the conspiracy theories.
I’m not sure what colour or condition you think gold comes out the ground in but I’d be interested to hear.
As well as having been involved in the finding of five gold coins with metal detecting this past 18mths I can confirm all were gold in colour.
Also I’ve done gold panning and sniping in Scotland and yet again can confirm all the gold came out as as….. gold 🤩 …go figure! 😉

I watch a lot of your videos, but these I’m afraid have a very suspicious vibe to them.
I just want to start by saying I’m obviously not talking about the gold coins, even complete amateurs (which I am definitely not) know that gold doesn’t tarnish, but some of those silver coins look very suspicious. When you add to that the fact that you missed half of the day and then started apparently pulling hammered coins out left, right and centre, it just wouldn’t have been possible. By midday those fields looked like a real festival had taken place on them, there was barely any ground that hadn’t been walked over. Then you turn up with your magic Deus II (which you’re clearly trying to promote due to getting one given to you for free) and find more coins in one day than everyone put together for the entire dig. Not to mention you stroll onto a field that you shouldn’t have been on, has signs telling you not to go on there, a field that would have been obviously void of any other people, and you pull out a gold hammered……..Oh and just by chance you’re making youtube videos, sponsored by Regton and promoting the deus II. Those fields just weren’t like that and what you’re doing is letting the organisers of detectival off the hook. People paid a lot of money, travelled a long way (some from abroad) and invested a lot of trust with the organisers. We paid premium money to detect on premium land and it was a load of nonsense. They had to be really trying to find somewhere that bad in that area, you could have gone anywhere around there and been literally walking over history, but they chose to cash in on those fields. IF you’re selling out just to get free stuff then shame on you, your videos are good enough without having to do that. Whether you want to admit it or not, we both know the truth…..and so do the other umpteen people that went to detectival.
