  • I recently purchased more Super 8mm CN footage from the mid-70's. It begins with a ride on the "Rupert Rocket" in BC approaching the Alberta border. Then there are some runbys of the Rocket and Super Continental. After some scenes around Jasper station and a brief freight scene, it concludes with another Super Continental runby. Sounds were added from my library to the original silent film. Enjoy!

    Great footage and sound expertly added. You may have the only footage of ex Milwaukee Superdomes running on CN

      was the sound really added later? It sounds like original

      @@PeterNGloor yes, the sounds were dubbed in. If you couldn't tell, then I succeeded.

    Fabulous… just perfect. Thank you greatly for the upload. I love the car body style engines and the CN had an excellent paint design for them.

    Pretty sure this is the only footage of the CN Rocket I’ve seen. 7 cars! These days it’s down to 1 coach and a park car. #1 and 2 still run just as long though.

    Note trains east of Jasper don't have ditch lights (removed in Jasper). BC required them by law for added safety at night to detect rock slides. CN pioneered the use of ditch lights in Jasper, adding them on Prince Rupert (Grand Trunk Pacific) trains beginning in the late 1960s, mounted on wooden frames. Now they're on every train in Canada and the US.

      Actually starting in late 1955 portable ditch lights were mounted on a metal bracket and attached to the front of the locomotive above the buffer. From 1964 onwards CN began to retrofit all of it's FP9A's with permanent ditch light brackets and 2 separate ditch lights were installed when needed.

    This is excellent. I love seeing the old footage of Jasper, in some cases it has changed a lot, and in others not at all.

    This footage is from 1976, judging by the Cape series bedroom buffet lounges in front of the sleepers, and later in the summer, judging by 3 coaches instead of 5.

    Any idea what the fires are for near the beginning?

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Burning old crossties. They no longer do this for environmental reasons.

    • @b3j8
      @b3j8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fmnut Yeah creosote treated ties are also expensive to dispose of. Likely a big reason concrete ties are being used more often besides the longer service life.

    Looks like the first passenger train had
    to breathe in the burning creosote ties
    that were burning everywhere.
    Not good
