    In 1957 as a 12 yr old Boy Scout I went on a 2 week canoe trip in Algonquin Park, the CNR Montreal -Sudbury Line went through the park and every night the Westbound Montreal section of the Super passed, still daylight until nearly 10pm but I didn’t have a camera then, alas the train and the rail line are both gone.

    Many years ago, I took the Super from Toronto to Vancouver and back. I used to work for CN Telecommunications, so I had a pass that got me on the train, but I had to pay for the sleeper. As I recall, back in those days, they had separate Toronto and Montreal trains in the summer, but joined them in Capreol, Ont. during the winter. When my work had me in town, my co-workers and I had to pass through the train, when we went for coffee in the morning.

    I sure wish we can still have a choice of choosing between the Canadian and the Super Continental today when it comes to transcontinental train travel across Canada, in addition to being able to take the train from Ottawa or Montreal directly to Western Canada and Vancouver without having to switch trains at Toronto.
    Note: The route of the Canadian today (A product of the 1990 budget cuts to VIA Rail) is the route of the old Super Continental on the CN Rail line.
    If things were my way, VIA Rail will still be operating BOTH the Canadian and the Super Continental today with the following differences: For instance, Ottawa Union Station in downtown Ottawa will still be active today and like the Canadian, the Super Continental will have two different branches (Vancouver-Toronto and Vancouver-Ottawa-Montreal), with the Super Continental's Vancouver-Ottawa-Montreal train branching off from the CN line prior to reaching Sudbury, and serve North Bay, Algonquin Provincial Park, Pembroke, and then Ottawa and Montreal through the Beachburg Subdivision and the Alexandria Subdivision.

    • @robertramsay5963
      @robertramsay5963  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you. CPR used to have through sleepers and divide the train at Sudbury, I believe. I suppose CNR did the same at Capreol though I never travelled that route until after VIA took it over.

    • @garfieldstephensonwu142
      @garfieldstephensonwu142 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply, and I see.
      Huh. I never figured that CP Rail actually divided the Canadian when the train arrived at Sudbury. For a while, I kept thinking that the Canadian alternates between travelling to Toronto and to Montreal, though I suppose that was the mode VIA Rail employed after they took over the operations in the late 1970s.
      By the way, I've written a story on FanFiction.net set in the summer of 1970 that depicts the Scooby-Doo gang travelling to Canada the first time, where they rode on the Canadian and got off at Ottawa for its annual SuperEX, and in the first chapter, I did a detail explanation of the train route east of Sudbury.
      One thing to note is that initially, I did thought that the Canadian was divided at Sudbury with one train carrying on to Toronto while the other continues on to Ottawa and Montreal, though I eventually edited the chapter to depict the Canadian as alternating between travelling to Toronto and to Montreal. I didn't realize that the division of the train was actually the case when CP Rail ran it until you mentioned it in your reply.

      From 1978-81, VIA ran the Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver while the Super Continental went Montreal Vancouver. Cars were switched between the two in Winnipeg. The Super was cut in 81 and the Sudbury switch was reintroduced on the Canadian. In 85 the Super came back, but only Winnipeg to Vancouver.

      @robertramsay5963  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I liked the diagonal swatches on the locos and the red noses, though my heart yearns for the earlier black, green and gold - guess that's because the colour the diesels were when they first appeared in my area. I thought the black/grey on passenger cars was a bit boring, and liked it when VIA appeared with the blue coaches with gold stripe.

    • @shnorth888
      @shnorth888 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm also a fan of the CNR green, yellow and black, but I'm a hugh fan of the CN noodle schemes. Although I found the VIA blue and yellow stripes a bit boring compared the the black and gray still a nice scheme though. I grew up in Newfoundland in the 80's and most of the equipment had the noodle or the arrows logo of CN subsidiary TerraTransport. What was left of the Newfoundland passenger fleet, mostly coach cars, was in black and gray paint and the cars either had the red CN noodle or red TT arrows. There were still a few cars in storage (cannibalized for parts to keep the few passenger cars and maintenance of way ex passenger cars running) in the green black and yellow.

    • @davidlisowski5245
      @davidlisowski5245 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The biggest problem on the f units in the original stripe scheme was that the stripes all went one way. A couple of times in the video, it looks odd when one unit is cut in backwards. I guess that’s why the stripes alternated directions on the 70s “zebra” scheme.

I have to admit here.It was actually the long out of the way milk run. The only one left is the Montréal-Jonquière one and it's not everyday, but three times a day I believe.And it's a small consist of one bagage car and one passenger,period. But as for me, I travel by train all the time to Ste-Foy (Québec City,) from Montréal, but also to Ottawa,Rimouski,Toronto if need be.)I'd never go back to coaches, event though nowadays ones are comfier, but nothing beats the train obviously and sure enough!! Amazing footage! What year? Looks like 1979-80 to me

      You're in the right ballpark - the films spanned quite a few years, probably from about 1973 onwards.

      From the looks mid/late 70's. Starting in 1976 the VIA blue & yellow started to appear on CN trains than by late 77/early 78 VIA was spun off into a separate crown corporation, VIA Rail Canada .

      Curt Wakeman our family took the SC from Wpg to Van and back in the summer of 1980 and I don't remember any CN paint on those trains so I'd say most of this is 70s. A fine look back on early VIA operations and the subtle changes in Downtown Winnipeg... outside of The Forks, which is just off camera to the right. Neat to see the CN VIA branding on the passenger cars. I'd only ever seen yellow nosed cab units with red noodles from that era.
