Dweezil is a true and rightful heir to the name "Zappa". I had the absolute joy of getting to see him several years back. It was one of the best concert performances I have ever seen. Top ten. Maybe top five. MAYBE top three. It was such a thrill to see him absolutely own his father's music.
You should find the guitar battle of Dweezil and Steve Vai. Phenomenal stuff.
And Dweezil is super cool too. Fun story: have a friend whose 13 year old son is a huge Zappa fan. He wrote Dweezil a letter, wanting to go to the show, but it was an adult's only venue as they served beer. Dweezil invited him to come to the rehearsal for the show, and then let him stay to see the show anyway too.
Dweezil's band, which included many former Zappa musician's, was every bit as tight as any of father Zappa's bands.
Awesome to see someone reviewing Dweezil! Blessings!

I was fortunate enough to be at that show and it was still pretty early on in ZPZ. I've seen all of their LA shows, with the exception of one year when I just couldn't make it, (their shows at the Roxy in honor of the anniversary of his dad playing there were the best, IMO). While Dweezil's playing is terrific in this video, he has continued to grow and get even better and I highly suggest catching them live if they end up heading back out on the road again. His unconventional playing in this is something he had to teach himself, as he was a very structured player prior to forming the ZPZ endeavor. It's his attempt to, stylistically, match Frank's playing, which was also very unconventional, (the best ones always are, right?). He famously describes it as, "the chicken and spider", where Frank's left hand was like a spider crawling over the frets and his right hand was like a chicken pecking at feed. While I don't think it entirely encapsulates all of Frank's playing, I think it's a hell of a great descriptor to start one down the road of how he functioned stylistically.

I flew down from SF for the Roxy anniversary show. Got to shake Dweezil's hand and tell him how me and my friend Andy used to lie around his bedsit in Dublin when we were really young just absolutely devouring all the Frank we could afford and find, and that his dad meant more to us than we could ever express. What a show that was. Whoever was drumming that night was unreal.

It was an electric Marimba, forget the xylophone! But they are similar, so no worries! Dweezil had a short career of his own, he even did a stint as a DJ on the original MTV. But somewhere along the way I think he decided that he did not have his dad's compositional talent, but he did have the chops to play his music. This is early ZPZ, he has gotten better over the years, and no, he does not have Frank's stage presence, so he just let's the music do the talking. This is one difficult song to play, but when played right, like it is here, it is a beautiful piece of music!

Dweezil's work putting on Zappa Plays Zappa is amazing. The effort put into getting together an amazing band and performing so many very difficult songs by Frank is astounding. He really honors his father's legend. (Unfortunately his brother Ahmed turned out to be a bit of a dick...)
Dweezil's put out a lot of solo albums over the years as well. I'm just a few months older than Dweezil and I first heard of him when I was about 12. He put out his first EP and his song "My Mother Is A Space Cadet" got played on the Dr. Demento show.
One of my favorite solo Dweezil albums is his 1991 Confessions. It's filled with some really great Pop/Rock including an amazing hard rock cover of the Bee Gee's "Stayin' Alive" featuring lead vocals by Donny Osmond: th-cam.com/video/F4CMGbs1-rI/w-d-xo.html

I’m not even sure where to start reacting to this reaction. Did you react to Frank’s Inca Roads? Can’t remember. So I’ve seen Dweezil doing Zappa Plays Zappa 3 times and each show was amazing, I brought friends that knew nothing about Zappa and they loved it. Dweezil is not a composer per se but he decided to dedicate his music career to carrying on his father’s legacy. He is an incredible guitarist, organizer, and leader, despite family opposition. IMO he’s a total bad ass and we are all lucky that he does what he does. Go catch a show next time he’s nearby. You won’t regret it. As always, thanks for making us Zappa nerds happy. Love you both!
If somehow you guys do decide to react to Frank’s Inca Roads I’ll offer a warning. The Roxy live version will give you a taste of how good that band was to watch but it is riddled with claymation that Frank deemed necessary but ultimately over time is just distracting. Nothing wrong with going with the One Size Fits All audio version. Just saying. Either way, I think it’s good for you to see what Dweezil was up against.

    Well done again you guys.
Spot on with your assessment of the different playing styles of Frank and Dweezil. Dweezil is a great guitarist in his own right but more planned and controlled. Frank’s solos were more improvised and frenetic partly due to his aggressive attack with his right hand.
You’ll always get a bit of negativity when people compare this performance with Frank’s 74 performance, but when you haven’t heard Frank’s music played live before and you’re fortunate enough to be in a theatre watching these guys play this, you’re left with your jaw on the floor.
This was the first incarnation of ZPZ an amazing group of musicians. It’s a different line up now but equally as good if not better. Sheila is still there as the musical director.
Napoleon is great, as usual. It’s good to listen to him talk about how he joined Frank’s band.

I've seen Frank only once, but I've seen Dweezil four times, taken a master class from him with my daughter, and spoke to him twice. He is an amazing person and an amazing ambassador of his father's music. He and his band do so much justice to the legacy of Frank's bands. Here he's performing with the brilliant Napoleon Murphy Brock who holds an important place with my daughter and I. Long story that I've told elsewhere. But Dweezil is a show I will never miss.

Dweezil stays true to his fathers music. Whenever he tours in Stockholm Sweden the audiece allways sings Bobby Brown with the band. Mats Öberg (a wonderful blind keyboard player gets to do a solo with the band. ) the audience goes apeshit and we have a good time. Keep up your music Journey and enjoy listening to wonderous music 😍

I’ve played guitar with Dweezil a couple times, but we end up just chatting, he’s such a warm and friendly guy, with lots of history and technical knowledge.
Dweezil has 8 albums I believe of his own music, and they’re all in my collection.. He is guest guitarist on a ton of stuff.
Dweezil is a far better guitarist than his dad (see him playing all those lines along with the xylophone & keys, something Frank never did), but if you prefer Frank’s playing that’s alright too. But Frank was more dedicated to composing.

You said it, not f-ing around in here. Even though Frank loved humor and to be entertained, when it came to his music, he was very serious. If you did drugs or got messed up on the road, you were gone. Frank was about as sober as they come. Great thing about Frank is his use of so many motifs. He couldn't be categorized because he used all catagories. One of the greatest composers of any time.

OK. This is good you heard this, this version... but, and don't let anybody tell you what to do... this one and the KCET vers. you saw on the other page... are just two versions.
It helps a lot to see things in their own context. FZ would improvise every time he might get a chance after the band learned how to play something - they were his songs, he could do what he wanted. And so he did AAAFNRAA and then maintained that ethic across years of multiple bands and differing arrangements - which is an entirely different level of play than most folks can maintain... . There was a discipline to it. Starting with regular practice. Once songs and band were 'road-ready' then he would try different things. And as bands would gain confidence that they could do it, he would push them more in even different ways. Rehearsals and sound checks were chances to introduce new material on the road, individual songs were also regularly rearranged in setlists, songs combined etc. Every show, every performance, different.
Napoleon Murphy Brock first joined the Mothers in 1973 and this song became a central fixture in that band. NMB was given a frontman singer's place. The amazing thing is how he quickly adapted, wonderfully, filling the role out like nobody else. [In this regard, Dweezil never did, never tried and admits that.] Frank had found NMB as a frontman soul singer gigging at a hotel in Hawaii on the way back from a short Aussie tour - Jun-Jul73. He' had just turned 28 yrs old and Frank asked if he wanted to be in his band.
Dweezil's great and should be commended of course as well as all the band members over the last fifteen years they've been doing that.
But, context people! There are many, many Inca Roads. And they are all different. :)

If anyone wants to hear Dwezil's 'old' style of play and how it compares to Frank, look up Chunga's Revenge from Transfusion posthumous album. They both play on the track, and the difference between the way each sounded on guitar was obvious.

Dweezil has his own music too and you should listen to some of his songs but he has spent a lot of time and energy on Zappa Plays Zappa. I think learning to play his father’s parts has increased his skill and especially his soloing is much better now than it was during the first ZPZ tours. It is probably difficult for him to deviate too much from the original versions of his father’s music without getting criticism. Hence we hear them singing “Chester’s thing on Ruth”. Chester Thompson and Ruth Underwood are nowhere near that performance. In reality if Frank were on stage he would have gleefully changed his lyrics to suit whatever he found funny at the time. I hope that Dweezil becomes comfortable enough with improvisation and writing that he does his own thing. Fantastic performances of Frank’s music are being done by many bands and musicians. I have even heard a group of accordions play Zappa.

      @Peter-K 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I saw Dweezil's first tour when he formed ZPZ, and in that show he perfectly mimicked the solo off of OSFA, but over the years he has learned how to improvise his solos too. The last time I saw him he did a killer version of RDNZL, but the jam was all Dweezil.

Dweezil was always the more technically proficient guitarist of the family. Closer to Steve Vai than his dad usually, but here he’s as smooth as usual but he’s using a lot of hyper-staccato notes, which was his dad’s signature sound.

I love what Dweezil is doing, and that many in Frank's bands are participating. I know this will probably come off wrong, but Frank brought a sense of - can't thing of the right word so I'll say - brought a sense of musical danger to the shows that no longer exists.

You asked whether Dweezil is doing his own or just carrying on his own music. He has his own albums. They are good. But what he spends most of his time on is trying to spread his father's work. After all, it's music from the future. He also recognizes that his father improvises most of his solos, and so Dweezil does the same. He tries to play in his father's style, but his own playing can't hep but inform what he does. Those are his words in his master class. He was asked, what's the hardest song for him to play. Dweezil said that the solo in Inca Roads is the one. He has to run through it before every show. He demonstrated to the class by playing it cold and, needless to say, he messed it up.

Yeah you were talking about that I mean it is amazing how do weasel is a lot more mellow but he can do some amazing ribs I mean probably technically he might even be better than his dad I'm sure his dad would say that and I didn't know if that was actually Ruth Underwood the original Vibes player that would be awesome because they said at the end of the song you know on Ruth on Ruth that's Ruth but but up up yeah you know the thing is with the keyboard player holy shit you know that guy has some big shoes to fill because originally George Duke played that keyboard part in the synthesizers and that large electric piano and all that so that's huge yeah Ruth Underwood she was married to Ian Underwood who was the original member of the Mothers of Invention he played saxophone and then eventually his wife joined up with the group when Frank found out that she could play the marimbas and The Vibes and all that proficiently which is quite obvious oh my gosh but I love the whole theme of the song I'm sure you know about the petroglyphs on the high desert Plains up in Peru so they theorize that it was all done for the landing strip for the UFOs to land and so that's obviously what this song is about and about the armadillo Headquarters in Austin Texas and the guacamole Queen guacamole Queen guacamole Queen whatever that means alright you crazy kids keep playing that music you know someday I'll tell you about when I met Frank Zappa that was really fun all right brooklynites you know I actually got lost there about I don't know 10 years ago I actually got to see the original Yankee stadium before they tore it down right there it was getting dark and I finally turned around and found the Washington Bridge and I was so happy because now I wasn't lost and the Big Apple so we could get back to the Midwest ironically one of the few people actually happy to go to New Jersey
