  • 'The Braes of Balquhidder', written by Robert Tannahill (1774-1810) was the inspiration for the 'Wild Mountain Thyme'. Anna welcomes special guest Emily Ovenden to sing with her on this midsummer episode.

    Will you go, laddie, go
    To the braes o' Balquhither?
    Where the blae-berries grow,
    'Mang the bonnie bloomin’ heather;
    Where the deer and the rae
    Lightly bounding together,
    Sport the lang summer day
    Many the braes o' Balquhither.
    Will you go, laddie, go
    To the braes o' Balquhither?
    Where the blae-berries grow,
    'Mang the bonnie bloomin’ heather.
    I will twine thee a bower,
    By the clear silver fountain,
    And I'll cover it o'er
    Wi' the flowers o' the mountain;
    I will range through the wilds,
    And the deep glens sae dreary,
    And return wi' their spoils.
    To the bower o' my deary.
    Will you go, laddie, go…
    When the rude wintry win'
    Idly raves round our dwellin’
    An’ the roar o’ the linn
    On the night breeze is swellin’,
    Sae merrily we'll sing,
    As the storm rattles o'er us,
    'Till the dear sheeling ring
    Wi' the light lilting chorus.
    Will you go, laddie, go…
    Now the summer is in prime,
    Wi' the flowers richly bloomin’,
    And the wild mountain thyme
    A' the moorlands perfumin’;
    To our dear native scenes
    Let us journey together,
    Where glad innocence reigns
    'Mang the braes o' Balquhither.
    Will you go, laddie, go…

    Picturesque setting... poetic. All very aesthetic and the music 'top drawer'. Mm...Sweet subtle high notes.

    Beautiful performance of this song. Who would have thought this pandemic would still be with us 12 months on.

      @@AnnaTam here in Australia it has been so mild compared to the rest of the world. A bit of an isolated outbreak of Delta at the moment, but still nothing like the UK or the US. Good to hear the vaccine rollout is going well over there.

      @@DanielKellyFolkMusic so glad you haven't had so much trouble. There is certainly a big increase in cases here now but happily the vaccine seems to be making a huge difference - far fewer people are becoming very unwell. Fingers crossed we can manage it and begin to travel again soon.

    This is beautiful! It sounds like it could be a folk song from my home in NC. Balquhidder is actually my families ancestral home area and just found out about this song.

      Sam that's wonderful! I'm so happy you discovered it, it's such a beautiful song and so exciting to have a family link to it. Balquhidder is such a lovely area too!

    How utterly beautiful! I was moved to tears on hearing and seeing you both with this unique arrangement, sing this emotive piece. I'm sure that the weaver-bard himself would have been so moved to hear your most genteel rendering of this wondrous song. The later 'Will Ye Go Lassie Go' was my aunty Mary's favourite, and it was sung by all at her funeral in London many many years ago. I feel that many of Robert's songs leave a hint of lonesomeness.
