I have the whole series on dvd ...it was pricey but I adored the show growing up,...still do. I've seen it soooooo many times...but it still tugs at your heartstrings
it amazes me how many amazing Canadian series came out of or beautiful maritime coastline Road to Avonlea, Anne of green Gables, Emily of New Moon etc. that said this was one of my favourite endings to a series, because i have always felt this way about my home in the rockies no matter where i’ve gone, where i go, I always remember where I came from, and there is something so special about home, that makes me feel so great to come back too. amazing series.
Prince Edward Island is so beautiful. I spent some of my happiest hours in New England, and that coast houses so many of my memories. How I miss those shores, and the line where the Atlantic touches the sky.
The producers wanted to end the show when chronologically this would have been just before the outbreak of WWI. They wanted to leave the scene, characters and viewers with this idyllic place where they could escape to time and again, as evidenced by Aunt Hetty's final speech. I've watched this series many times, first as a kid when it first aired, and now through GazeboTV. A great show. Many memories. I love that the last word uttered by the characters is "Avonlea!"
To this day this scene always makes me cry. I was saddened to see such a great series end. I’m glad Jackie Burroughs had the final scene. RIP to a great actress ❤
Ironically the music played at the end of this became the theme for successor show Wind At My Back also created by Sullivan Productions. Wind At My Back is set in Ontario in the middle of the depression during the 1930's.
My family LOVED the first few seasons of this show so much. We never saw the later seasons, and I don't know what it is about this clip...no matter how many times I watch it...I still find myself getting a little emotional...in a good way 🥲
I remember having a major crush on Sarah Polley and Heather Brown, who played Izzy Pettibone. Polley went on to do some pretty good movies in the late 90s and then almost disappeared. I’m not aware of what Heather Brown has done since. This was huge in Canada for I believe around 7 years. It was a tradition in my family. It was basically a spin off of Kevin Sullivan’s Anne of Green Gables miniseries/movies. I remember he did Wind At My Back after this, and it last for a few years, but I don’t remember it being as a success. Sullivan did a lot of TV movies and series in the 80s and 90s, I think all of them set in the same place and time period - Maritimes in the early twentieth century. Sullivan’s work was so well done that I remember seeing one of his movies that co-starred Zachary Bennett when he was very young in the early 90s while on a trip for a swim meet in Oregon. So there were plenty of Canadian shows and movies that aired in the U.S. in the 80s and 90s pre Trailer Park Boys.
Watched a episode or two in the U.K. then did not know the name, thank God I did,somehow, a quick search and 10 year of searching, like a mutter, asking and describing a wishy washy olde skool series,
The bride at 00:43 looks familiar - isn't that Sarah Polley? She was the little girl in the Munchhausen film by Terry Gilliam and I also saw her later, as a mature actress, in The Secret Life of Words. And from what I hear, she is quite a capable film producer as well...
@@SkywalkerTales I totally admire her because she also has the courage to stick up for herself and what she believes in - I've heard she once was invited to a Disney event (I believe in connection with this series) and she had some piece of jewelry with a peace movement pendant on, which they asked her to remove, which she however refused to do.

Last year Sarah Polley won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for "Women Talking" which she she also directed. She's been a film director since 1999.

Sarah Polley she is! She had the leading role in seasons 1 through 4 on this show.
