- Avonlea.tv pays tribute to Jackie Burroughs who starred as matriarch Hetty King on the series Road to Avonlea. While other characters from the show were drawn from the works of Lucy Maud Montgomery, Hetty King was original, and Jackie's portrayal of the perfectly flawed school teacher garnered three Gemini awards during the series' seven year run.
Burroughs passed away on September 22, 2010.
She was the heart and soul of a place many of us would love to escape; when the day's realities became too harsh. Aunt Hetty will live on forever; thank-you for such a loving tribute to one of Canada’s brightest stars.

I will forever remember Road to Avonlea and Jackie. Two of my favorites.
My goodness, I had no idea she passed away. I started to cry when i saw this video. I was just typing avonlea into youtube to watch a few scenes and remember my childhood. My mom and I would watch Avonlea every week on the Disney channel from the time i was very young. I grew up with avonlea as a major part of my memories with my mom. I am now 23. It only seems like yesterday. Jackie will be dearly missed, but what an beautiful legacy she left as Aunt Hetty! I am still crying. Thank you Jackie!
Patricia Hamilton, who played Rachel Lynde in both Anne of Green Gables and Road to Avonlea series, also recently died. She was 86.
Hard to say goodbye, Jackie. You were our real old aunt.
Road to Avonlea is my all time favourite show and Aunty Hetty will always be my Aunty. She will never be forgotten. I still watch the re-runs six days a week on CTV and ASN. Can simply not get enough of the King family, Sarah Stanley, the Dales, even Eulalie and Clara Potts
Rip dear Jackie. I fell in love with this series because of your wonderful act. You were the brightest star of the show. You'll be missed always. 😳

She was such an incredible actress, especially as Hetty. I always loved watching Road to Avonlea when I was younger and it felt like I was actually part of that family just by tuning in. The show ended when I began high school so it felt like a door had closed but another had opened

A truly gifted actress. Her voice, facial expressions, mannerisms, and movements stole every scene in this beloved show. Memories of my childhood came flooding back. Avonlea was a special, loving place to escape to during the cruelty of middle school for me. As I got older and entired junior high and high school, I lost track of the seasons. How could one let go of friends and family? During Covid 19 there was a part of me that longed to return to a time of innocence, beauty, humanity, values, and simplicity so sadly missing in these moderns times. It's been a joy to rediscover episodes from youth and so many I never got to see the first time around with through adult eyes. The entire 7 seasons has been a joy to watch in quarentine. Timeless. Jackie Burroughs rest in peace, rest in power.

I loved Aunt Hetty! Even now I admire her character, I also remember admiring her as a kid. I’m 35 now, and I think she influenced the development of my character; the entire Avonlea show did. Even now, I love to read the Anne of Green Gables books and watch Avonlea on the Gazebo TV app. I long for a time like this. This video had brought tears to my eyes.
I am watching on gazebo tv also, I love this series.. Aunt Hetty is the best.

I saw this serie just this year in Greece and from the very first episode I loved aunt Hetty. I am very sad for she passed away and did not seen the serie when she was alive....rest in peace Jackie..

One of the most amazing character actors of all time. I simply loved her as Hetty King. She brought such life to the show. A beautiful love story between a strong woman & her;beloved Avonlea!! To be like Jackie Burroughs . . . what a thing to strive for!!
I just wanna say she was a real teacher not only in Avonlea but also in reality. She taught us a principle in every episode.

Road to Avonlea was one of my favourite serials. But Aunt Hetty was something else.......
I just did adore Jackie in her role. The character ,Hetty King was just made & cut for her. I don't think any one else could have played it so perfectly.
I have videos of this serial & watch them. I never get tired to see the episodes again & again.
I was really heartbroken to know that Jackie Burroughs wasn't there any more.

I remember being 6 years old and coming home to watch this show, Hetty looked just like my nana and for the longest time i thought they were the same person, this show was maybe one of my favorite shows of my youth.
Hetty was a kind hearted woman. May not have always come across that way, but she was a good human being.

I'm just watching the first episode of Avonlea. Jackie didn't really get into the accent she used for the character until it got more into the show. You can hear her own accent coming through. A great actress!

its just recently started repeating on Itv 3 in England and iv completely fallen in love with it. Every character is fantastic but the actress who plays hetty king COMPLETELY steels the show ! Her comedic expressions are a joy to watch ! You cannot take your eyes off her when shes on the screen ! Every little sideways look she gives and slight twitch of an eyebrow . . . or the way her mouth moves . . its genius ! What an amazing actress. In series 1 she wasn't as funny, but now we're into series 2, you could see she really played with the role and developed it into a full blown comedy character !
I think it is still on iTV3, or maybe the series has ended but it is on telly in Greece now and I watch it every day at 4pm. It's the second time shown in tv here as well as Mr Selfridge which finished last week. I watched all the episodes. Love both these series, they are classics.
I don't care about the other roles that she played (tho I know she was complete as an actor), she was and she will forever be my Aunt Hetty...and I know that every time I want to come back to Rose Cottage in my heart, she'll sit by the fire waiting.
I like her character of Hettu King she made her part the very best. Enjoy watching Avonlea.

She was a dear close friend of mine for over a decade. Miss our lunches in the gay village and standing with her while she smoked, which she loved.
Found a few old pics of us at the old lab theater on britian street. I was working a show and tired to kick her out off the landing for smoking inside, till i figured out it was her, duncans friend .

I just saw this movie, really, very cute, I love it very much.
That episode where she lost that man she was in love with.... The one where she ran through a field and he went to chase after her and never told her he had a weak heart.. When they took him to the other city but he didn't make it there and died on the way that was a killer....

oh wow didn't know she passed away! loved this show as i did the anne of green gables movies....i think my favorite moments of Hetty King was her interaction with Gus Pike..and when he thanked her with his violin solo i cried...what a wonderful series, i wish they would still show re-runs!

Ms Burroughs was a Canadian gem. We were lucky to have her, and she made us proud. Her funeral will be in Toronto, September 29th, at St. James Cathedral. The family has invited her fans. Rest in Peace Jackie. You'll always be everyones favourite Aunt Hetty.
