      But that's not what he did. Anyone can tell you you're living wrong - and be right most of the time (few of us are "living right", so opposite of the stopped clock syndrome).
      What he did is give some direction on how to live right, at least in one sense of the term. Most of the confident MF'rs that tell you you're wrong are ONLY right about the "you're living wrong" part -- they're just as wrong, or worse, with any subsequent advice on how to live better.
      Don't be defensive about this - you have a lot of company. Including me (I've stumbled across a few of these directions on my own, and they've helped a lot. I wish I had come across, or realized the importance of, the rest, much sooner. I'll see if they can still do some good in the time I have left).
      Good Luck!

    I could say most of these have helped me, but the one I would promote until my deathbed will be #6. So many people that I have seen lunge at the first chance to have that sports car or oversized house only to watch those things drag them down financially. I got certified (#1) with an MBA, invested in variance (#3) by learning to speak foreign languages and moved to a big city (#4). But the one defining element for my success was to not spend money when I got it. I bought my first, and only, new car just before my 40th birthday, despite having a six-figure income. Delaying satisfaction and having substantial savings paid dividends when the financial crisis came and I was one of the few people with cash on hand. In 2012 I had down payments for two investment properties that have more than quadrupled in value. Ten years later I own five houses, a half acre of land for future development, a net worth in the millions and I still drive my 10 year-old Ford Focus. Delay gratification and eventually the market swings will present opportunities that will make others say that you "fight unfair." (#10)

    I like some of what Scott says about doing what you're good at (or could become good at) instead of just following passion.
    Where I tend to think the problem lies in the premise: we don't derive joy from our careers. Instead, a career is a byproduct of the preexisting values and beliefs we learn and develop in our lives. The accoutrements really don't mean much in the end if you don't know why you exist in the first place. Of course, this video is intended for career advice, and not meant to as life advice. However, we tend to put far too much emphasis and value on identifying as our careers, instead of the other way round.

There is always a project that your coworkers will see as too much effort, boring, or beneath them - do that one. Your boss will be grateful and you will become the “I need it done I ask her”. So Good They Can't Ignore You is the book I read that convinced me: Newport wrote that we can develop passion in the areas that we're skillful in, rather than develop skills in areas we're passionate about. Skills are the master, passion the slave, not the inverse.

    I met a young plumber recently, a journeyman and he makes $2K a week, no student debt. He had no college degree and is better off than most young grads I do know. Jus' sayin...

    • @ebaylistentomusic
      @ebaylistentomusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      True and at the same time learning a trade may well make more sense than a sociology degree and massive student debt. Not that those are the only choices...

    • @joelewis
      @joelewis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      ebaylistentomusic Learning a trade has the same requirements as outlined in this piece. If he's a handyman making 2k a week there's a lot more he has to do in order to get where he is now. There is also certification levels within handyman work that can lead you to making more money... where does he live? 2k a week says he's in an area that definitely needs a lot of what he's selling...enough to be making 2k a week perhaps?
      He's not telling you the full story if he just tells you that. You can't just get a set of tools and start a business- at least not legally or remotely successfully.

    • @ebaylistentomusic
      @ebaylistentomusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes it does have requirements for training and certification but I find a lot of people don't even consider the advantages of a trade, the bias towards college at all costs being so great. He is not a handyman he is a journeyman plumber, big difference. He was hired by a plumbing company that needs people, you don't just set up on your own from the start. And he makes enough money to buy lots of expensive musical instruments from me.
      On the other hand I sell musical instruments to music students entering college. The parents are in many cases pissing away enormous amounts of money to produce marginally talented musicians that nobody wants or needs. It is a bit like watching a car crash in slow motion, $200K+ down the drain in many cases.

    • @MikeWille
      @MikeWille 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      What you're "jus' saying" was already said on the video. "If you can't get to college get another certification." You're not challenging what was said, you're just agreeing.

      ebaylistentomusic: b.s. In finance here. Check out Mike Rowe works. It's important to educate about the skilled trades. When I finished h.s. this option was completely unknown to me. I went to college because everyone else was. Nobody ever stopped to ask why. I've seen a lot of middle aged men who are miserable sitting behind a desk who needed to hear this 20 years ago.

  • @hploch1
    @hploch1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    Excellent video. All great tips, but I have to disagree a bit with the balance one. I get the point of what he is saying (strive to be the best and don't be "balanced" just because someone says you have to be) but to say that losing your first marriage and losing your hair (lol) was"worth it" to get where is today gives a mixed signal in my opinion.
    No judgement on him or anyone else, but I personally would not say that losing a marriage, becoming miserable, or losing your health is worth it to be the best you can be professionally. Obviously he is doing really well now so maybe it was all worth it in the end for him, but that one piece of advice doesn't sit well with me.
    Other than that, all of the points were great and loved the wig at the end!

    • @creak22
      @creak22 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hunter Ploch I think you have an excellent point, but I think you missed a bit of what Scott intended. He stated that he values the balance he has in his life, but balance doesn't come easy. It took him years of imbalance and crazy work hours to get him to where he is today, a place where he can do what he loves and still spend time with his family.

    • @tehllama42
      @tehllama42 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's always a Cost::ROI question... there are areas of balance young people (myself included) can and should be willing to give up because the payoff is worth it, and right now too many learning institutions who cater to that demographic are still peddling the misguided notion that achieving balance at all times is the best answer - it isn't. The answer is finding the balance that works for what each individual wants to do, and can accept the consequences for later on, and that's something each individual has to figure out for themselves. You can have more of that balance early on, but it comes with tradeoffs on earning potential, and for 99.99% of people the right mix is somewhere in between.

    • @SarahRugheimer
      @SarahRugheimer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think leading a balanced life actually leads to success. People are not efficient working 100 hour weeks. And the idea you can sacrifice your family/relationships for work is a very gendered concept given biological realities women professionals face in terms of fertility. I recommend Shawn Achor's TED talk and book, "The Happiness Advantage" for showing why instead of "when I am successful, I will be happy" the reality is "when I am happy, I will be successful." Also people tend to greatly over estimate the hours they work. Greatly. www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2012/10/study-people-claiming-to-work-more-than-70-hours-a-week-are-totally-lying-probably/263825/

    • @Brazbrah
      @Brazbrah 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah nevermind the fact that it's easy for him to say that now he's settled, comfortable and successful. How many other people sacrificed their 20s and 30s only to still achieve professional mediocrity, or have a breakup in their 40s putting them straight back to square one with no real investment in a well rounded and healthy social life, or who get a cancer diagnosis at the age of 35 and realise they've wasted their golden years being someone else's bitch, or maybe just realised that the magic dangling carrot of professional success isn't fulfilling after all.
      This video is pure ideology, spoken like a true psychopathic capitalist.

    • @monjier
      @monjier 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't climb a dominance hierarchy being normal or balanced unless you're in a non-competitive country. Let's say you play it safe with balance. By the time you're Scott's age you have a family, you have balance and you're a miserable fuck at work because you decided to play it safe or have fun in your 20s and 30s. By the time you hit 40s you need to be at a high level in society because if you are not, the statistical chances of you finding meaning in life and climbing up in the world is close to zero. Your 20s are ages where you can make dramatic mistakes and nobody will fault you or blame you. You can't do that in your 40s. Also, idk how this dynamic would apply to females because by the time she hits 40s if she doesn't have kids she will need to hurry up before her body clock stops ticking. And chances are she would want to settle down. What woman in their right mind would overwork themselves 80 hours per week at their job when they could be happy and find meaning working fewer hours and partaking in the raising of her child?

      We need motivated business and government leaders, but we also need complacent worker-bees... like you perhaps? Many people are, or pretend to be, satisfied with a life largely spent as a frappuccino artisan. This video is not targeted to them.

    Hey Scott, if everyone does this and more including reaching out to people for coffee and perfecting your resume and still doesn't get results what should they do? The biggest repeat issue I've had was always either being discriminated against or not having an inside referral. Don't ask how I know why I got turned down, but social engineering helps a lot

      In case you didn't recognize the back handed complement try reading it again. He is successful for what he did BEFORE he put the wig on not the wig. The wig was simply to get attention. Without prior work no one would have noticed him with or without a wig.
