Two different AliExpress microphones - a "U87" and what I can only describe as a joke or toy

- These are two mics that were very cheap and with free postage, from AliExpress
I bought them for the casings, not expecting much of the electronics - but I did not expect one not to have any electronics at all!
The supposed U87 has quite a decent casing and will make a very nice microphone, with a new capsule and set of my mic boards.
(An actual Neumann U87 costs around 3200.00 upwards, so I was not expecting it to be the real thing!)
The other one can only be described as a child's toy or gimmick; it is nothing but an electret capsule wired to XLR pins, in a weighted plastic enclosure. Not a professional, studio, OR condenser microphone as in the listing, other than possibly in some engineers nightmares!
Giveaway competition: The toy mic set is no use to me, though I can imagine that some kids would think it was great!
If anyone wants it for a kids Christmas present or any other reason, I will send it free of charge to whoever with a UK address comes up with the funniest and most fitting description, providing that is within TH-cam language rules!

Same specs on both mics which is expected but the Freq Response graphs are clone from what I could see HAHAHA. Thank you though for the video. Always nice to see what is out there.

Yep, good for parts but those capsules say it all.
So how was the sound? You didn‘t even give a sound demo.
That "U87" could be a good body donor.
Indeed, that's what I was looking for, and I've now converted it.
The flat design mic was possibly going to be used for ribbon mic, but not in that plastic case!

Man great for this video, I have just bought the zeal sound thing, it works with its sound card but it stopped working ("The mic sound became very low") when i connected it to 48v connection and i was wanting to tear it down, thank you for this video. It has put confidence in me to tear it down.
It shoudl work again with its own interface (or direct in a PC) if you put pretty much any generic Electret mic capsule in to replace the damaged one.
If you want to make it work with a normal 48V phantom powered mic input, it will need an adapter circuit adding as well as a new capsule.
Have a look at my mic modding videos or on my web site, there are circuits for building your own adapter - eg. the instructions for my mic audio PCB have schematics & details of the sections needed to use with an electret capsule.
I've built them in multiple forms on stripboard for various projects.

@@rogerskitamirike6828 I think it probably uses a 16mm diameter capsule? Measure the old one to be certain.

The 2nd mic is horrendeous. The U87 ok for a donner body replacing that junk capsule on it. I found it that with most mics under £30 you tend to get the worst quality but once you go a bit higher you may find OK deals. I personally get the Bai Fei Li Mics as they are totally worth it.
Horrendous is a good description! I was only looking for casings, so as cheap as possible; I was still surprised about it being plastic though!
I've used one of the 87 type bodies, that looks like it will be a nice mic.
I'm not familiar with the brand you mention, but I'll have a look? When I've wanted ready-to-use mics I generally look for MXL ones on ebay - eg. you can sometimes find such as a boxed MXL990 for around £50 or less. Those are pretty good as they are, and can be improved with some simple mods.
