I'm a new follower, and only recently watched the video which detailed it, but it makes me SO HAPPY to see you on your feet and able to do most things. There is nothing more sad and tragic than for a good man to become useless, and doubly so over something not his fault or doing. I just recently started restoring a few axes for my own use, it's definitely addictive! I'm finishing up a beauty of a double bit Collins now with a Kelly Cruiser up next (stamped FSS) and a 4 pound Canadian SAGER Swamper coming in the next week or so, it should be a BEAST. I love bringing these vintage tools back to life, they were made with pride to last a lifetime - unlike the disposable stuff that's being sold today. I've picked up some great tips from you so please, keep the videos coming!
Been watching all these videos while recovering from work injuries. So I refit and refinished my granddads old Council 3.5 head I found squirreled away. Dad bought a new handle for it about 15 years ago and never got around to it! Head probably set for 20 before that! Lol No sander,, so had to reprofile it with files though. Turned out great for first try. Found another older barbaric looking head buried in the dirt i was gonna do next. Started cleaning it up and found a hairline crack near the front of the hole from top to bottom, so probably not worth fixing or welding up. So checking the yard sales and such for my next project.
I enjoy watching your videos. I am still trying to get used to your terminology. I am going to start refurbishing axes on the side ,and I watch all I can. The axes will all be usable ,and won't be hung on my walls. I just need to understand profiles of blades, and the best approach to setting it up. Love your spirit. Keep the videos rolling. Take care.

Love the axe content, there's nothing quite like swinging an axe to keep you fit. Good video on re profiling the bit! You're right on the money, you should experiment with polishing your edges it has a minimal effect but does help reduce friction and help the axe cut through cleaner. That's a nice belt grinder ya got there friend, and the older one is almost just like one I used at the hardware store where I worked on small engines, yes McCulloch too. Lol. I sharpened many a axe, and what have ya on it. I'm working on an axe mod myself right now, them speed bumps are quite the task to remove, I grind some with a flap disc and file some, it's what you might call fun!!!!!!

Take your time, don't be in a hurry, make 2 plan Bs... Draw it out on paper, make sure you have quality helpers. Weigh your options. Use utmost caution and you can do amazing things.
Yes! Perpendicular shaping followed by parallel finishing. I’ve been doing it like this for years. I’ve only ever had a 6x48, and have often thought that a narrower belt might actually be better…not sure.
I started making a hut out in the Australian bush. After buying hatchet for small limbs/kindling and attempting to reprofile it I obviously did something wrong because as soon as I hit that green eucalyptus the whole blade edge went into a ripple/wave. I ended up just doing a second profiling on the edge and it's great now. I got another just today for logs and I'm going to attempt to do what you've done in this video as it's a 3ft handle with a 1.8kg head. Hopefully it lasts, it was only $25aud but I'm getting a hand forged 3.6kg stainless for my birthday in Aug so definitely can't wait for that one! Unfortunately I only have files to do the reprofiling but it gets a great burr

Hey buckin I was wonder if you had any tips and tricks for profiling and sharpening hand tools such as Pulaski's axes and shovels without any sanders grinders and mechanical tools? Reason I as is I'm a firefighter and we have been going on wildfires and on each one we have a 14 day work period and 2 days off and in those 14 days our hand tools get pretty dull and out of profile but all we have are hand files any tips and trick would be greatly appreciated. I love what you do and your one of the reasons I got into forestry so thank you so much keep it up love alway wins🙂
Not a woodsman by any means but enjoy riding trails a camp and clearing trees, it’s very satisfying. Collecting and restoring vintage lanterns and tools led me to a few vintage axe heads. Found you on TH-cam and was inspired to properly hang these axes. First one turned out nicer than I thought but I believe I’ve got a bent handle. Can it be straightened?

@@williamgray9088 I picked up an "Ultimate Versatile Vise" from Garrett Wade a few months ago, they run about $125 now. I absolutely LOVE that thing, 360° head rotation and it's practically perfect for smaller parts like axe heads and handles. It does require magnetic jaw pads but they're cheap on Amazon (Garrett Wade sells those too). I have no affiliation with the company, just really pleased with this vise.

I recently got started with chainsaw milling and found some of your older videos where you do some big milling work. I was wondering if you have any videos about sharpening rip chains for milling? I know, totally unrelated to this video ;)
I’ve been chainsaw milling for a few years and have had better experience with a normal crosscut chain. Just keep it sharp and set your rakers right and it’ll cut. Just my experience….
@@benmeardith227 agreed i sharpen my chain to 12ish degree's and all that but then i tried milling with a stock chain, i think it cuts just as good, the one thing i have learned tho is you can file your rakers way more aggressively then if you're crosscuting. also to save some money i started just using used motor oil
The one thing that a milling chain angle gets you is smoother but slower. I’ll take the speed of a regular crosscut tooth profile, faster but slightly rougher. If you’re going to be planing it later on, then no problem anyway. Besides, chainsaw milling is EXTREMELY slow and wears out your saw quickly. If you mill with your saw just be sure that you run the carb a little fat as it makes a bunch less heat that way; it’s full throttle with a huge load for a extended period of time.
A thinner profile will penetrate deeper but a thicker profile will force the chips to split off. If you thin it too much it will tend to get stuck, and then you waste time and effort unsticking it on every swing.(People with sharp machetes know what I mean.) Now the right balance depends a bit on what type of wood you are cutting, the weight and width of the axe and how hard you swing. When I say a thicker profile I don't mean a sharp speed bump/angle change, still a smooth transition just not as fine of a taper. I also take the speed bump off of my splitting mauls, still a very thick profile in general but you don't bounce off.

If the smaller belt grinder you have is a 1x42, you could easily get a leather belt that would fit that and finish it on that grinder. I would go one step further and recommend trying a felt belt of the same size, very comparable finish to a leather belt, but it doesn't stretch out like a leather belt and lasts a lot longer.
sweet convex work. i highly recommend CUBITRON products for grinding. I sharpen axes and other tools on my angle grinder. Freehand only. After this i only use micromesh for a few times. Every time (nearly) Razorsharp. The key is to form a convex bevel.

I think what Buckin" is trying to achieve in his grind , is what's known by custom knife makers as the convex edge & without any humps on the face & then the custom knife makers polish the surface of the convex grind for a crazy wicked scalpel / razor sharp cutting edge !!! Just my thoughts on what he is trying to achieve here but without the end polish work !!!

The pattern of least resistance for the win. Nothing like an edge that has been laid back. Too much metal in the way, get rid of it ! 👍 I hate when people say to me "I want it sharp but not that sharp". 😂
friend just to clarify .. this is a splitting axe that happens to chop a little as well , but it is definitely a wood splitting axe , i ll demonstrate

You could use a really worn out sanding belt and flip it inside and out and use Polishing Compound on it and buff the edge of the axe with that

I've done the same with a flap disc on an angle grinder 👍 Bumps are no good for splitting or for chopping.

Some folks in the industry refer to the burr on the edge as the " wire edge " !!! or , taking it to the wire edge , in the sharpening process !!!
BR put a pc of steel plate up on wall behind the grinder area. So you don't get a hot cherry in your siding board.

just buy the right chain and follow the angles of new brother and make it sharp . 5 degrees ,, and have raker gauge on hand
The one thing that a milling chain angle gets you is smoother but slower. I’ll take the speed of a regular crosscut tooth profile, faster but slightly rougher. If you’re going to be planing it later on, then no problem anyway. Besides, chainsaw milling is EXTREMELY slow and wears out your saw quickly. If you mill with your saw just be sure that you run the carb a little fat as it makes a bunch less heat that way; it’s full throttle with a huge load for a extended period of time.
A thinner profile will penetrate deeper but a thicker profile will force the chips to split off. If you thin it too much it will tend to get stuck, and then you waste time and effort unsticking it on every swing.(People with sharp machetes know what I mean.) Now the right balance depends a bit on what type of wood you are cutting, the weight and width of the axe and how hard you swing. When I say a thicker profile I don't mean a sharp speed bump/angle change, still a smooth transition just not as fine of a taper. I also take the speed bump off of my splitting mauls, still a very thick profile in general but you don't bounce off.
Oh and if you don't have a bench/pedestal mounted grinder. Clamp the axe to a sawhorse and use an angle grinder.

If the smaller belt grinder you have is a 1x42, you could easily get a leather belt that would fit that and finish it on that grinder. I would go one step further and recommend trying a felt belt of the same size, very comparable finish to a leather belt, but it doesn't stretch out like a leather belt and lasts a lot longer.
You could also use a buffing wheel with a little polishing compound to remove that burr very easily without the need for a leather strop.

i highly recommend CUBITRON products for grinding.
I sharpen axes and other tools on my angle grinder. Freehand only. After this i only use micromesh for a few times. Every time (nearly) Razorsharp. The key is to form a convex bevel.

I think what Buckin" is trying to achieve in his grind , is what's known by custom knife makers as the convex edge & without any humps on the face & then the custom knife makers polish the surface of the convex grind for a crazy wicked scalpel / razor sharp cutting edge !!! Just my thoughts on what he is trying to achieve here but without the end polish work !!!
