I was horrified that he kept enlarging the incision but I was confused by the internal pulling I could see when he reached in. made total sense when it came out and I was totally educated.

I’ve had enough puss for one night.

@@lestki Not OP but have worked with abscesses on other animals. Stitching them up can raise the chances of them filling back up if they get infected again, or if the abscess returns. You want it to heal from the inside out, not vise versa

Even in humans, if you get an abscess on your own ass, then you still keep the wound open. The key is to let it drain and heal outside in, like the other person said. The risk of it coming into contact with feces is less risky than closing a wound that was already infected.
In all the abscesses I have watched drained, never seen anything that large and hard come out, must have been such a relief to the cow. I do not find this gross and I know I could do this as you know you are helping the animal. You should send this video to the Dr.Pol show, he would love it

He knows what must be done and does it with confidence and he does not drag it out that’s good for the animal get it in there and get it out clean it up get the animal back to its normal routine. I worked on a dairy farm all thru HS , we had just a few abcesses , and nothing that compared to that Whopper .
