Totally agree , the overseas aid budget is a national scandal and in law thanks to David Cameron. Donating to places like India with space programs yet emaciating our NHS, Police, Ambulance and armed forces who are the bl##dy idiots? Heard MPs whining today about how they are hated might be something to do with scandalous pay rises and pensions they awarded themselves when the rest of us got pay freezes and illegal changes to our pensions ... yet we were all austerity together weren’t we multi millionaire David and Nick .... who both must struggle to pay tuition fees. Clegg now works for google just sums up his moral compass.
Should have added we could have four of these for what we spend in foreign aide every year!! The GDP of the Jamaica annually and most goes on funding upper middle class posh accountants/ pen pushers playing at saving the world and lots and lots and lots of foreign travel for them or into pockets of corrupt middle men in the third world.
idot we need them because we are close to going to war, we have got major problems with Iran and Russia has sent over 84 thousand troops to the border of Ukraine and then we have China that will not follow the international laws and that is where the carrier Elizabeth is on its way there and I forgot to mention north Korea and japan. This is why we need hundreds of thousands of personnel ready to step up if we go too war. The reason why the public don’t know about this is because of bloody brexit.
roberto gissepi I come from a military family so I do know what I’m talking about. You are naive to say something stupid like that. Do you know what is really happening with China Russia iran North Korea japan and Africa?? Well I do and it’s not good, this fucking brexit is the only thing parliament go on about and situations that involve us and these countries all going head but our government and authorities are only focused on fucking brexit. China won’t use international laws for the oceans, Russia have at least 84 thousand troops on the border with Ukraine and japan are causing havoc and killing whales and dolphins and dogs cats. I could go on but I’m not tonight. ..
All I can think is why didn't we keep on the Illustrious class carriers, load them with F-35Bs, and build the two new QE class carriers with EMALS instead of having a ramp and load them with F-35Cs?
One the Illustrious class couldn't handle the thrust coming from the F35 so would require the decking refitted which would cost a fair amount. Two the maintenance of the class was already becoming so expensive as old parts were becoming hard to find because they were not being manufactured anymore or at least in large quantities. Three not enough crew to man them. Four is the added cost for the jets would be high although I agree we should get a hundred more. As for the QE the Royal Navy has already shown innovation in this area with rolling landings and showing that you don't have to sacrifice payload to get off either. There's more information on this but honestly can't be fussed to go through the intricacies of it.
Well the last point answers all of your questions because without that the rest of the argument falls apart: a)EMALS didn't work in 2010 when the decision had to be made b) There was no firm delivery date c) No fixed prices could be given d) Neither the Converteam EMCATS or the GD EMALS people would give a performance guarantee e) It was basically all too new. f) It would have needed endless £ Bns of further development If you need proof of how we made totally the right decision in 2010 just look at the USS Gerald R Ford which was 'launched' some months before the QE, has cost some $18 Bn and counting and it is still not combat ready. While we have built and launched two carriers, both work and we are now consistently launching 5th Gen fighters off the QE's deck. And we did it for $ 10 Bn
I actually meant Invincible class carriers but I think everyone realised my typing error and answered the question anyway. Some very good answers. Best one being that the two new carriers are now completed and ready as opposed to if the MOD had waited for EMALS.
They should have been maintained with Harrier until these were ready. It was a stupid move to leave us without this important capability. That said you cannot really operate F35 from these old ships.
you had a better air force 40 years ago and couldn't sink the 2 old aircraft carriers or shoot down harrier jets, how would you do it now against type 45s and stealth jets, and up to 12 nuclear subs available at a push. And the island has upped its defense from 60 marines to nearly 2000 servicemen as well as the Falkland island defense force and 4 typhoons that could probably beat your entire air force without help. ZERO CHANCE DREAMER.
@swansea007791 The service operates seven fleet submarines (SSNs), of the Trafalgar and Astute classes (with four currently planned or under construction), and four ballistic missile submarines (SSBN), of the Vanguard class. All of these submarines are nuclear powered. actually 15 nuclear subs eventually
@Vlodec the British have some of the best Hunter Killer Submarines and crews in the world, why are these easy targets, or do you mean all aircraft carriers?
Take away the oversees budget and let's build a few more

The precision team work on those tugs is a whole other story. Nice job
She's back to the dealership right now for some sort of warranty re-call issue.
Awesome sight 👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Great work everyone she is beautiful but could do with a lick of paint, now get her out to work ASAP because we need her now more than ever.
What do we need her for? There are less conflicts going on in the world than ever before.

And don’t forget humanitarian relief
Townman N yes we shouldn’t forget that either.

It might have been the angle, but it looked like a tight squeeze getting the carrier out into the river
Wow. You kept that quiet...!

So many reasons.

Impressive.
It floats.. Its a start

The 2 british aircraft carriers are easy to sink
There sits an armchair general...

@Vlodec + Anything is a target to a Sub Commander, but carriers have a roll to play in force projection, you cannot control land it submarines.
