Hotel Del Coronado: Piece by Piece Restoration

The historic, nationally renowned Hotel del Coronado is undergoing a major facelift. The AIA San Diego Preservation Committee hosted a Zoom tour which covered the original design and construction in 1888, modifications over the years, and ongoing and recently completed work at the front façade, lobby, and adjacent industrial buildings.
The presentation showed how missing historic features are being replicated from historic photos, including 20 stained-glass windows. The renovation also includes ADA upgrades, replacement of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, custom light fixtures, refreshed landscaping, and a new front-drive and water feature. The virtual tour was led by preservation architect David Marshall, AIA of Heritage Architecture & Planning. David is principal architect for the restoration of the hotel’s front façade and entry veranda.
Patrick Sweeney of KPFF Engineering also joins the panel as the Project Engineer for the renovation project. The one-hour tour was followed by Q&A.
