Agree, he makes it look easy. I find myself looking at craigslist after w3atching these videos even though I have an old Honda 305 in my garage in pieces.

I picked up the 50$ HF sheet metal bender to do this same job. I also used 16g... it’s pushing the Bender’s capacity but it defiantly worked well and made it much easy to bend the sides vs welding them.
You can add a little airflow with some reverse-facing louvers underneath. An easy way to do that is to cut a section out of a floor register and weld it in.
In future, it might be worth having a separate battery box near the engine and then you can have a much more slimline electronics tray under the seat.
don't go square edge at back follow the back line of the frame.
I agree on being too square, he should have followed the angle of the frame and left a nice even spacing.
Keeping lines looking right are key . I’m working on a 71 triumph at the moment
another great vid. if you extend the sides of the box back so they end in line with the frame but leave the back of the box where it is, you would fill the triangle shaped gap at the back of the box.

I’d recommend some slits for air flow and bend a bit of a curve into it also adds a nice custom look cleaner than a notch
Really like your vids. They have helped me out a bunch. Just wondering why you did a square back on the battery box instead of slanting it to match the rear down tube? Tire clearance?
Some expanded metal would work well for the front for airflow. Great video btw, i have a cm400 that i want to play with. battery box looks good!
I think I'm with you on this one. It'll look better once you lay some paint on it. I love that Tuffside seat!
Thanks for the video, enjoyed it. I think it would look even better if you have the sides the box follow the angles of the frame. You can still put the back panel in square, straight up and leave room for the wing nuts for the seat, but it would take out the small triangular "holes" on the back of the box and leave a less "boxy" feel to it. I feel like the box is too square at the back, looking at it from the side. I understand that you need space for the wing nuts, so I would cut little triangles for each side just to extend the box without making it bigger. That way it would flow better with that 45 degree or so frame tube at the back. Just an idea. :) Good job so far, liking the videos. :)

Two bits of angle iron in a vice works as a cheap metal bender
great build its simple enough that i feel like i could do this!
I cant say i'm feeling that battery box at all. That seat sure looks comfortable but its too thick for me it could really be doing with being hollowed out. No doubt the bike will still look badass though that patina on that tank is going to really sell that bike.
Love the project so far and the info you give. The only thing that distracts me is the small triangular space between the back of the electrical box and the frame. Looking forward to next Monday.
P.s. Check out the metal brake Colin Furze built on TH-cam. May not be sufficient for 16g but who know.
David I agree, that triangle piece really needs to be filled in with a piece of metal. I think that one it's painted black, that hole will stand out even more.

Why did you use such a large LiIon battery? I just bought a 4 cell 12v battery for my KZ400 and now I’m worried it wasn’t big enough. I mainly got it so I could make a smaller tray. Just wondering your thoughts.

Hi. Why don't you add a fillet to the back of the box to cover the small gap; not enclose just extend the sides.I think it would look 'designed'.

I read somewhere that its not a good idea to use lithium ion on bike older than 1980. True or false? Why is that and what can i do to be able to do it.
They work well as long as you upgrade to a modern regulator rectifier. If you don't you can over charge the batteries and they can overheat and possibly catch on fire.

Classic Octane I have the same brand battery you have there in a 2013 cb500x. Does it have a modern reg. .? Been about 6 mo no fires yet. If it doesn't how do I know what to look for? Love your content by the way.

Great video on Motobatt lithium ion batteries. Universal posts because each one has four battery posts, and a kit for connecting to the posts multiple ways. th-cam.com/video/XrUTHrLu2Kg/w-d-xo.html. You can attach accessories to the spare posts, and leave the main one unmolested for good connections to start and run the bike.
