First class tutorial man. I wish every vehicle issue could be explained with this ease and understanding with such professionalism. High 5 and thank you. I believe this has resolved my issue with the problem being in the electrical part of my switch in the collum. I love the part showing how to engage the starter through the relay pin. Now I can still drive until I can get a new switch

Thank you, so much for this video. I know you posted it 3 years ago, but I just now needed it. My sons car decided not to start one day, and this video was spot on in order to troubleshoot it. It turns out that the ignition switch is bad. I verified by jumping it out. Started rite up. Ty, Ty, TY!

Can you please help me? I swapped the fuses like you did.
However, my issue is that my car will start cold, it will start with almost no hesitation and I can go for a drive, etc., but then after reaching normal operating temperature and when I'm done, if I shut my car off, wait a minute, 2 minutes, etc., any really length of time, the car will refuse to start on. Luckily, I was able to visit a shoppe and they did a diagnostics test. The reading stated that "battery voltage too low" accompanied with B1318-20 CMDTCs. Should this try to be cleared and is there any way to do it on an Ancel 310 OBD2 scanner or will a big machine have to clear it? I have done several research and cannot find the answer nor the reasoning behind this chaos.
    Parts that have been replaced:
    Starter
    Alternator
Battery (after even getting told from AutoZone that the battery was good and having it tested, I was advised by a shoppe mechanic to let them know it appeared it wasn't holding charge; I did a battery swap yesterday and today after driving 90 minutes, I tried to turn it back on after 3 or 4 hours of the car being off, and the car would not turn on; at the auto shoppe yesterday when I saw the mechanic, the battery was probably at 12.9V or so and then when I tried to turn it on, it would drop down to 12.6 or so and fluctuate around those lower numbers, hesitant to turn on)
Serpentine belt (this came shredded off roughly a few weeks ago, appears it just gave out)
Thermostat (from an incident that I had with the car overheating in January or so)
    Crankshaft position sensor
Lower radiator hose (hose blew off from overheating in January or so)
---To be replaced and I understand these are not necessarily relative to ignition but , I'm at a full tune-up already so no harm no foul, right?
    Camshaft position sensor
    Ignition coils
    Spark plugs
    MAF sensor (under warranty)
    CAI filter
Really looking for answers and hope, running out of thoughts and my mind is going nuts.
Could it be open circuit? I don't know what else to do.
Appreciate anyone who can help and get down to the bare bones of this, happy to send a tip as well (also subscribed).
    Thank you.

I have a nearly identical issue. Starts fine if the engine's cold (sitting for a few hours), but if I turn my car on shortly after reaching a destination (ex. turning the engine off to get gas, then turning it on when I'm done) it struggles to turn over. The only difference with my car is that, for now, it still starts eventually. Just takes 10-15 seconds and getting worse. I'm taking it to the shop on Friday because I have no clue what it could be. 2008 Focus.

Great information! I'm going to test everything tomorrow. I had an intermittent start issue. Now it's to the point that it won't start at all. I've replaced the start switch on the steering column. Still having the issue. I just tried swapping the starter relay with the rear defrost. Still won't start. It's getting dark and I'm going to check the neutral safety switch tomorrow. I can check voltages and the diode then with my multimeter. Probably the neutral safety switch. The hardest thing to charge.
Thanks again with the great info. Much appreciated!

What happened here? What was the culprit? I appreciate your response!

    • @kgsalvage6306
      @kgsalvage6306 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Mister_CVC After all that, ended up being the battery in the key itself.

  • @kgsalvage6306
    @kgsalvage6306 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I just tested the voltage at the relay socket. I have battery voltage on the main pin for the relay. When I turn the key to start, I'm only getting 11.4v on the relay control pin. The diode test good. Would it be the starter solenoid or is that voltage too low. I guess I'll try jumping the mains on the relay going to the starter.
Edit: Jumping the relay the starter turns over, but the car doesn't start. I do have the key in the run position.
    Any thoughts?
After doing that, I plugged the relay back in and it started. First time in the last 20 times. After turning it off it started again. Now I have to troubleshooting intermittent faults now.
It is starting all the time now.
Just wanted to point out that when it wasn't starting, I did swap the relay with the defrost relay and it wouldn't start, so I don't think it's the relay.
Is there a way to jump the relay and get it to start? As I previously said, I tried before and it would turn over, but it wouldn't start. I'm just wondering so if it won't start somewhere, I could do that to get home.

@@kgsalvage6306 did you ever figure out your issue? I’m trying to jump the starter pins now and the car won’t start. I do have ignition issues and a broken key and needing an all new tumbler and key set but I’m still trying to start the car without it at the moment

    • @kgsalvage6306
      @kgsalvage6306 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@cjbratvold Yes, it ended up being the battery in the key. Unbelievable! Nothing I watched mentioned that. The only reason I found out is because I grabbed a spare set that I never use, and it started fine. I honestly didn't know there was a battery in them.

My car charger work, head lights, back light but nothing on the dash comes up when I have the car in run. Do you think it’s my jcase fuse is blown.

Hey man I have a question.
whenever I start my car it will do this tick tick sound and it’s comin from this box that is right above the gas pedal. I got this car that you showing on the video, I went to the place where I got it from and I honestly feel like I am being used for money. I took it to the same place 3 times and it’s still doing the ticking sound, also it will tick again whenever I turn the air to hot and cold to see if it will do it again and it does but if I leave it on cold it doesn’t do the ticking. It happens whenever I start my car and if I mess with the hot and cold nob

Have a 09 escape 2.5l limited front wheel drive. Had to replace the motor and trans after changing the motor will not start unless the starter relay is jumped. Have checked all resistors and replaced the starter relay and ignition switch, still nothing. Once I jump the relay and start the vehicle it will not let me put it in gear its locked in park. Any ideas as to what I may be missing?

Without you telling me what number that really is I can't find it on my car because my under the hood fuse box module looks slightly different in arrangement. I am trying to find location of starter relay on 2000 Ford focus. Another video said it was behind steel plate behind the interior fuse box. Upon removing the steel plate holding my interior fuse box together, I discovered there are no relays whatsoever behind that steel plate in my make and model 2000 Ford focus

Thanks! i'm having an issue no crank, no start, issue with my Ford mondeo MK 3 Titanium 2006 (manual). There was a light left on my car for many days( in the trunk) and drain a battery completely.
I never repaired my car before so, i'm quite new to it.
I did now know about the powerdrain obviously. It cranked the first try, but then i tried again - the car would not crank and lights and all indicators flashed and turn to Max. I figured the battery was bad:
1: Charged it and cranked the car with key and ignition siwtch>no Cranking
2A: Bought a new battery - pluged it > no luck> tried to crank the car by supplying battery voltage to the Pin 3 relay socket (same as you point out here) > no luck
2B: Charged the new battery , cleaned the battery clamps > tried to crank the car by supplying battery voltage to the Pin 3 relay socket > car the car started cranking.
Cannot still start from with the car key. Still get no crank - But i can now say it's an issue with the circuit to the ignition switch OR Theft mode:
I suspect that the Theft mode is active on my car Since the clock light (red diode -and no other indicators on the dashboard) is Blinking 2-3 times as fast as it normally does. (so either key fault, fuse or bad contact with the wiring somewhere) - What do you think, and any suggestion to turn it off?
If it turns out *not* to be Theft mode:
I need troubleshoot the starter circuit from the relay to the ignition switch.
I check all the fuses,30&60 Amp fuses, and fuses with an engine on it & fuses with an engine and a key on it > all ok.
tried swapping the starter relay to another relay (the front lights that i know is working)
I will also check the rest of the all fuses with a multi-meter continuity
Any suggestions of fuses and relay's to check?
I Also bought an OBD reader and read no fault codes other than EGR that i know is a fault from before- which i have constant issue with.
Erased the codes anyway - The Engine service lamp did not go out . Some status
    I/M Readiness:
Mil: ON (which means it failes - or the Check engine light is on) probably because of P0401(EGR) code
    MIS: N/A
    FUEL:N/A
    CCM: OK
    CAT:N/A
    IGN: Spark
-Alot of other stuff with N/A,
