Mary I of England wasn't crazy. She was perfectly sane and also wasn't evil. Executions were perfectly normal in those days and she executed way less people than her father or half sister Elizabeth. If Mary I was either evil or crazy she would have had her sister Elizabeth executed which she never did and certainly had plenty of opportunities to behead her for years. They both executed a lot of people. Sometimes in relation to conspiracies like the Dudley conspiracy against Mary. But as an ordinary person I think it valid to point out Mary executed a lot more ordinary people; millers, brewers, weavers, smiths, pregnant housewives, tailors etc. Why? For religious beliefs, for studying the Bible in English, for not being able to answer certain questions relating Catholic dogma etc. I think that's why she tends to be seen as mad and 'bloody'. Although apprentices and some other ordinary people were executed under Elizabeth reign, largely those executed were gentry, aristocracy, priests (always aristocracy or gentry in those days) . Certainly some of the powerful Catholic families were conspiring against her as there were conspiracies against Mary. It's likely most wealthy Catholics were happy to just get along with their lives but they were also treated as suspect regardless. [Lyrics] (Music) (Verse 1) King Henry 8th, my father thought I had some Tudor brothers. Mum had no sons so rather I have plenty of step mothers. When at last prince Ed was born the crown I bid adieu. Said as king he must be sworn boys go first in the queue. But there's no need to worry if at first you dont succeed. Because when Ed died, I swept aside and rest was decreed. (Chorus) Mary, the first that's me, Tudor lady and queen of England. Not to be confused with Mary, Queen of Scots. Not the same see? Though weirdly, she's a cousin to me. (Verse 2) Some tried to say Lady Jane Grey should be queen after Ed, but England wanted me hurrah, so poor Jane lost her head. Protestants were saying that my ruling made them sick, cause' when it cam eto praying my tastes were Catholic. They revolted, challenged me, fuelled my great desire. To tie 300 to a stake, like touch paper then retire. (Chorus) Mary the first, that's me, called the bloody queen of England. Not what I intended tried to be, good you see but history only remembers, I was a catastrophe. (Verse 3) Married Philip, king of Spain who then left me. England thought he was a pain especially. Cause' he told me to attack France with troops, but when the French advanced we lost Calais, Whoops! (Verse 4) Throughout my reign, it rained and rained it poured upon the poor, harvest failed, no food remained and flu killed many more. Burnt protestants and wed a fool led armies to defeat. Burned more prots', I say my rule was short but not that sweet. I had no kids I had a sis named half-sis Liz, she was a big queen Bess to be. As long as she would rule the land as a Catholic queen like me. (Verse 5) Lizzie, didnt listen she, made the country protestant. Meaning my legacy, was ruined see. Everything, I tried to achieve went down, swanny! A little embarrassing really.
She did try, she was very religious and believed that if England stayed Protestant they would go to Hell, so by getting rid of the main Protestants she thought everyone would turn back to Catholicism!
The sad thing is, Mary originally had no intention of executing Jane Grey, since she saw the girl was being used as a puppet by the men in her life. It was only when a revolt in Jane's favor almost succeeded that Mary was forced to sign the death warrant.
Young Mary was devout but reasonable and often kindhearted, pragmatic enough to see the truth and what she had to do after the failed revolt. Then personal tragedy turned her angry and vengeful, gave her a cruel streak. She was a very tragic woman and suffered a lot as the first true Queen of England.
weird. Only the English could blame her for the weather :P lol (though quite ironic to say that Elizabeth had a similar famine in her time but it was forgotten because it was after the Armada)

green card to uk available for you sir
Fat Frog can I get a green card to the U.K. too? I really need to get out of America! We have a giant orange chicken nugget in the White House! Help!
Sarah Hadland doing Mary doing Kate Bush.
MusicElle you wouldn’t wanna live here either 😭
After rewatching this, I half expected Mary to morph into a power ranger😂😂😂
What?😕
libiusperseus you know, I can’t remember why I said that😂😂😂
Someone please try to remind me🙏😅
this was very much the most iconic thing i've seen
Miranda, Mitchell & Webb, Horrible Histories... Sarah Hadland's comedic acting is just brilliant.
Just so everyone knows, she is suppose to be referencing Kate bushes song “Wuthering Heights”. All songs from HH make a reference to late 60s- late 80s artists. :)))
"Boys go first in the queue" talk about boiling primogeniture down to it's essence.
[Lyrics]
(Music)
(Verse 1)
King Henry 8th, my father thought I had some Tudor brothers. Mum had no sons so rather I have plenty of step mothers. When at last prince Ed was born the crown I bid adieu. Said as king he must be sworn boys go first in the queue. But there's no need to worry if at first you dont succeed. Because when Ed died, I swept aside and rest was decreed.
(Chorus)
Mary, the first that's me, Tudor lady and queen of England. Not to be confused with Mary, Queen of Scots. Not the same see? Though weirdly, she's a cousin to me.
(Verse 2)
Some tried to say Lady Jane Grey should be queen after Ed, but England wanted me hurrah, so poor Jane lost her head. Protestants were saying that my ruling made them sick, cause' when it cam eto praying my tastes were Catholic. They revolted, challenged me, fuelled my great desire. To tie 300 to a stake, like touch paper then retire.
(Chorus)
Mary the first, that's me, called the bloody queen of England. Not what I intended tried to be, good you see but history only remembers, I was a catastrophe.
(Verse 3)
Married Philip, king of Spain who then left me. England thought he was a pain especially. Cause' he told me to attack France with troops, but when the French advanced we lost Calais, Whoops!
(Verse 4)
Throughout my reign, it rained and rained it poured upon the poor, harvest failed, no food remained and flu killed many more. Burnt protestants and wed a fool led armies to defeat. Burned more prots', I say my rule was short but not that sweet. I had no kids I had a sis named half-sis Liz, she was a big queen Bess to be. As long as she would rule the land as a Catholic queen like me.
(Verse 5)
Lizzie, didnt listen she, made the country protestant. Meaning my legacy, was ruined see. Everything, I tried to achieve went down, swanny!
A little embarrassing really.
This always used to terrify me for some reason
Still kinda terrifies me 😂
ah, it's so good going back to the horrible histories songs when you've finally heard the songs they're based on! :D
I very much appreciate the fact that it’s a parody of Wuthering Heights. Perfect!
😭
Young Mary was devout but reasonable and often kindhearted, pragmatic enough to see the truth and what she had to do after the failed revolt. Then personal tragedy turned her angry and vengeful, gave her a cruel streak. She was a very tragic woman and suffered a lot as the first true Queen of England.
@@hkazu63 i agree
very true 😭😭😭
This 2 year old comment is actually sad- If Jane Grey never revolted she could have had a successful reign
I love her voice and her arm movements
LOL. The poor hedge would disagree with you. It didn't enjoy the "bad touch" it got.
SARAH HADLAND LOL
weird. Only the English could blame her for the weather :P lol
(though quite ironic to say that Elizabeth had a similar famine in her time but it was forgotten because it was after the Armada)
Ah, yes. The REAL Life Disney's villan song........
From a Real Angotagonist of history
I can't believe I share the same birthday as Bloody Mary. I also dance the exact same way when I've had too much to drink. Oh well.
TIME TO BURN PEOPLE GUYS !
That's pretty cool.
I have the same birthday as Elizabeth Bathory, so I feel your pain.
@@slytheringingerwitch Oh wow...the legendary Blood Countess! That's intense. O_O
She's literally the most prolific serial killer and (allegedly) the inspiration behind Bram Stoker's "Dracula."
@@stellatocca I know, plus being ginger, the Greeks believed that when ginger people die they become vampires, so another plus too.
"If at first you don't succeed" very clever play on words haha
This is kinda hilariously ironic in some respects- Mary herself had a powerful, deep speaking voice and sang as a contralto (the deepest female vocal range). Belting out Cher, Bonnie Tyler, Sade, Tracey Chapman, Annie Lennox, and many others would be more Mary's style (plus I can see a parody of Total Eclipse of the Heart suiting her story quite well 🤣). What we've got here is almost the opposite!
POV: ur Mary’s arms in this: ➡️⬅️↗️⬇️⬆️↘️↙️↖️
Sorry lol :) this gives me flashbacks bc I was so obsessed with horrible history
LOVE this... you’ll also love the “original” ... Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
It's Christmas Eve, and drinking with family while laughing at youtube videos. We end up on Kate Bush. I've never been a fan so her Wuthering Heights was a new one on me. Within seconds, I thought of this video and had to come show the family. Easily one of my favorite songs from HH, and so fantastic to finally know "the rest of the story".
Mary is so beautiful 😍 and I got a big box of horrible history books 📚
Me too
Me too
1:52 is how I walk the dog now, after seeing this.
Mary 1 would of turned out differently if it wasn't for Anne Boleyn.
A quote from six: "I broke England from the church."
Me: "You also broke a poor girl's heart."
She was the worst step-mom ever.
@@lessthanamillionsubscommun5845 Anne wasn't kind to Mary at all, although she did attempt to make peace with her several times but she rebuffed her. Henry was far worse though.
Actually, Anne worshipped Catholic till the very day of her death.
Sarah is just so fricking brilliant and hilarious
Thanks, I'm studying Wuthering Heights now, so I've learnt a bit more about it, although I still think J.E. is an actual woman sometimes XD
*This is legit my favourite song out of ALL of horrible histories*
I remember listening to a bunch of king Henry the eighth songs. (I am an American and we learn more about king Henry the 8th in school.) however, this song played after three king Henry the eighth songs and none of them were from horrible histories.
This song right here made me love the tudors dynasty when I was 15-16 and I am almost 21 now. This song is still bomb
I love how during the outside scenes you can see the slow progression of her dress getting more wet
Sorry, I don't see that 😢
HH: We are kid friendly!
Mary: *Singing about killing people*
"I used to think my life was a tragedy. Now I realize, it's a comedy."
2:21-2:22 that's just beautiful
This is like sweet but also psycho at the same time LOVE IT
when I first saw this song it genuinely terrified me and I can’t say why
Ultra-fabulous performance.
I always felt bad for Mary
King Henry ate my father. Poor Mary.
OMG thank you!! I’ve been looking for this for ages!
*Aragon* *and* *Mary’s* *favorite* *song*
"Throughout my reign it rained and rained, it poured upon the poor" is genuinely such a good lyric
the actor probably feels like a numpty when she does the dances
"Bit embarrassing, really." Yeah right, say that to yourself, Bloody Mary!
Love this song and Wuthering History :3
My friends watches stranger things and stuff me watched horrible histories 👁👄👁
I watch both
Actually, Mary didn't tell the men to throw the baby back, Mary wasn't present at the burnings they were just carried out under her policies.
Me at 0.05 = Oh shucks how shriek she is!
Me at 2.33 = What a master piece of voice!
You can tell Sarah Hadland's having so much fun with this.
My A level revision:
Horrible Histories: Okay Mary keep this child friendly
Mary I: (Sings about killing people)
Aragon and Horrible Histories: (Spits out water)
Aragon: I thought I raised you better than that
I like the end when Mary says;bit embarrassing really😐😐”🤣🤣😂😂
When I watched this as a kid I had to keep rewinding the program as all I could think was that there was a pretty girl dancing in a misty field.
Came here bc Sarah is doing strictly! can’t wait ❤
0:05 I Died XDD
this song always gave me big wuthering heights music video vibes
love this song
Same :)
Not sure about great, she did have more executed in 5 years than others, but, she was trying her best to save her people, and I have huge sympathy with her because of her upbringing, how Philip simply left her and how she was made a scapegoat for years afterwards
I can see Sarah Hadland playing Liz Truss in a horrible histories segment.
Everything Sarah Hadland does is brilliant!
She gives off the vibes of a serial killer if she got her own comedy and had no idea what she was doing
I love how catholic daughter of Henry the 8, England's queen that everyone fears.. Just plays with leaves
The new horrible history’s cast is horrendous, their acting is awful, I will forever miss this cast, they depict people and history so amazingly with no forced humour🥺
