- The Nitty Gritty of how to bunny hop a hardtail mtb and all the details of how to bunny hop a full-suspension mountain bike! Watch how Patrick, age 59, a bunny hop student of mine, is CRUSHING how to bunny hop - especially impressive as he is a short rider (5'6" = 167 cm)!
When I started to mountain bike myself and when I started to coach mtb skills, the bunny hop absolutely ELUDED me. I would have LOVED to find out the nitty gritty of how to bunny hop a mountain bike and how the move needs to be adapted depending on the type of mountain bike - and I would have loved to have my own course with the step by step drills that will lead you to nail the bunnyhop. In this bunny hop tutorial and detailed breakdown I am sharing the detailed phases of how to bunny hop and also I am sharing a detailed split-screen analysis of how to bunny hop a hardtail vs. how to bunny hop a full-suspension. Also, you will see why there is no active scoop in a high bunny hop!

What's the video demonstration software you're using? Its amazing for teaching
@@janeblogs324it’s called coachs eye 😊
Awesome analysis of my bunny hops! After purchasing your course in March 23, it took me about three months of practice to unlearn the high manual BH and learn your technique. Since then I am amazed at the consistency I can execute between my FS, HT and trials bikes. I never had this consistency with the high manual bunny hop. Without a doubt bunny hops were my best MTB skill success of 2023. This gets me stoked to practice even more now!
I am so amazed to see your progress and so excited to hear how well you’ve been able to adapt your technique to your different bikes.
You are an inspiration for everyone 💪😍 #practicebringsprogress and practicing the right drills brings consistent progress 💪😍
@@Roxybike_Ride.and.InspireThanks!
@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire- Thanks!
this is a pro level BH, I would be delighted to come close to it myself
what makes it so good is your ability to transition from "manual positon" to fully upright jumping position: speed and timing are perfect
you are actually doing an extremely high front wheel lift, but in the process of it you preemptively perform the second part of the BH, in the last phase of front wheel lift you are already moving forward and up, but the momentum you generated before overweights the body movement and the front wheel is still lifting, vertical bike+body position is a must for a high BH, the momentum you generate in the "manual phase" is very high, if you had stayed in the manual position a bit longer, you would have looped out, but you know the moment when to move forward to counteract it and use to get the bike and yourself vertical
your overall fitness is a great asset helping you to achieve such a result, congrats
@@joncov - Thanks!
So good. He's so deliberate with each move. Way to go, Patrick. Very inspiring. May we see a comparison also to the trials bike? My friend was saying a small point, that his manual is low instead of small. He seems to keep the FW low to help with his leveraging bar to hips when standing.
Coming soon 😋😋😋
Thank you. I have been practising your drills for a year or so. I cannot jump as high as Patrick. My progress is far less successful. I'm 72. So I am going to keep trying.
Way to go! Are you practicing with my course?
Thank you so much for this video❤ so informative! I understand. English is foreign language for me, but I understand)) I think, this is the best tutorial!
🥰 thank you‘ 🙏
Thanks Roxy! Not quite ready for this.😁
But I've started learning basic jumping skills and thinking there are some overlaps in terms of loading and extending and then bringing the bike up into you with landing??? I 've found it hard to get my head around the landing bit and wonder whether there are some overlaps with this?? Glad to have your "how to" videos back!😊
Hey Susie, in my opinion, a bunny hop (not as high as Patrick’s hop, but a CONTROLLED hop with the ability to land either front wheel first, both wheels at the same time or rear wheel first) is an essential prerequisite for jumping. Of course you CAN take simple jumps before being able to bunny hop, after all the kicker will launch you, but the question is, how much control will you have over the bike in the air? 😊 And are you building habits on a solid foundation that’ll serve you in the long run?
In short: being able to PERFORM all the details of a bunny hop will help IMMENSELY with bike control at take off, control in the air and the ability to mindfully place the bike into the landing at the right angle 😊
I am currently working on a new supersafe, easy-to-follow jumping course - but if you want to prepare with my proven and easy drills, why not start my bunny hop course?
Also, you can start my free Trackstand course, which is a great foundation for air time, as it teaches you the fine coordination in your feet and legs.
Much love, stay safe, Roxy ❤
Hi Roxy, thank you! That's really helpful. I think one of the things that has led to me avoiding airtime is being unconfident about landing. I will certainly think about your courses. I can see how learning the bunny hop technique will help with landing jumps!
Maybe I will try the trackstand one first. As I'm dyspraxic I have tended to go for face to face 1:1 coaching with coaches I know I feel comfortable with . But now I'm actually feeling ready for group courses again, as I've progressed over the past year. I started watching your channel about a year and half ago and have really found it helpful You're brilliant at answering people's comments as well as your demos and explanations. So, do I need to video myself for the online courses and can I do it at my own pace? Susie
@@susiehooper2798hey Susie, well done for progressing so amazingly. You can video yourself, but it’s not mandatory. Do start with my free Trackstand course first - if you use the code FRIEND-OF-ROXY at checkout you’ll get the course for free. Have you listened to my second last podcast? 😊 the one in which I explain why we sometimes „forget“ our skills on the trails and for which skills we actually need an in person coach?
@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire thanks I will check if I' ve watched that one!
@@susiehooper2798it’s not a video, it’s a step by step course 😊 You’ll find it on my coaching site roxybike.podia.com
Wow, both impressive and kind of intimidating to watch from a beginners perspective. I would be interested in how much off-bike physical strength (especially jumping skills) is needed and whether it makes sense to focus on that that before starting on-bike... Thanks a lot for the nitty gritty series, it is awesome.
Hey George, in our experience learning a bunny hop is possible at any age and experience level - and with our course, (which includes strength training exercises for the bunny hop), you will succeed with practice and our personalised coaching.
Plus: As you're already working with our other courses, you are totally ready to start this course. 😊
@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire Hey Roxy, thank you very much, sounds great and very tempting! Right now I am very happy learning the basics in your Wheel Lift Course...I put the bunny hop on my wish list for the near future.🤩
@@luckyoldgeorge6800 that's a great plan!
Your course has been a game changer for me! After years of absolutely sucking I finally nailed the bunny hop with the lessons and most of all your feeback that was so spot on and you caught stuff i would never have seen. thx so much!!!! So folks - dont hesitate. her course is worth every penny
Soooo excited to hear ❤ your progress HAS been amazing, Fred 😻
As a topic, I like the work you have done with incremental nose pivots for negotiating a switchback.
Awesome, Darren. Have you started my free Trackstand course yet? I below you will not only like it , but find it really helpful for nose pivots, too ❤
Thank you so much for this wonderful video. No one on TH-cam explains mountain biking skills in such great detail and clarity as you do. You are amazing. You are a lovely person with great compassion and a brilliant mind. Not only are you a true blessing to the mountain biking community but you are an immense blessing to all of humanity. I hope that God will always bless you and Berni in every way. I don’t know anything about Berni but if he is special enough to win your love then he must be a really good person.
I would like to see you doing some life coaching videos teaching everyone the importance of being kind. This world, too often, falls into darkness. I think you would agree that the key to making the world a better place for everyone is growth of kindness in our hearts and in our actions. I also believe that with your gigantic heart and brilliant mind, you can teach many people how to be kind. With the right understanding and dedicated practice, people who are not inherently kind can learn to be kind.
Thank you, Martin. True ❤ kindness (towards ourselves and others) is the key to constant growth.
Using the freeze frame to explain the technique is perfect and helped me immensely to understand what and why each movement is key. I'm 61 so Patrick has confirmed that an old dog can learn new tricks. 👏👏👏
Oh yes you can!! You just need the right drills in the right order and the persistence to practice!! If you bring the latter, I’m here for the other two 🤓🙏💪
Let’s do this 😍
Thanks Roxy, informative and relatable.
Thank you, so grateful for your comment 🙏
I am going to sign up for your course shortly. It seems that the reason Patrick is scooping his rear foot is really maintain contact with the pedals since he is not clipped in. Is my thinking correct?
If that were necessary, why isn’t he doing it on his Hardtail? 😊 he’s also on flats there. 😊
Can’t wait to see your progress with the course 😍
Excellent analysis! 👌😁
Thank you ever so much 🙏
Absolutely brilliant, thank you.
Thank you, Tony ❤
i'm planning to put more work into manual wheel lifts this riding season. maybe i'll get far enough to get to hops too! need to stop trying to start by pulling up on the bars
If you want to save a LOT of time, then simply follow my drills here: roxybike.podia.com/
🙂
I’ve started MTB and have both HT and full sus, I’ve been struggling hard to do bunny hop. I’m also 5ft6, how do I sign up for the course?
Hi Adnan, thank you for sharing your struggles with me. It can be super frustrating, especially as a short rider. I’d love to work with you to reach the goal 💪😍
The link to the course is in the pinned comment here and also I’ll add a link in the next comment, as sometimes the comment gets banned if I add one. So please do get back to me whether this worked, ok?
Much love and see you in the course, very soon! Can’t wait to hear about your success 😍😍

Is that your natural hair color or do you add color to it?
It’s added color 😊 But I am a reddish blonde naturally.
Is there any guide for the rigid hop??

It’s like riding a horse! Seems like it to me in a way!
Wow, my full respect for Patrick - I'm 52 and was thinking that I'm too old for that kind of stuff - but now I'm not that sure anymore... ;)
My oldest client is 84 😊 so “too old” is very relative. All you need is the right drills and the right mindset - if you’d like the first, you now know where to find them 🤓😊
Let’s work together to reach your goals!
Odd that this video didn't pop up first in a TH-cam search? Awesome analysis. Are you going to be in southern Germany at all this year for a course?
I am, but I am currently booked out until February 2025 (no, that’s not a typo 😅) - but why not work with my home training course that will help you much more than a one time course and actually cost less? (The one that Patrick worked with)
And I am signed up!
Can’t wait to work with you! Have fun practicing!
Bin gerne autodidaktisch unterwegs. Mache aber auch ab und an einen Fahrtechniklehrgang beim DAV Ochsenkopf ect. Evtl ja mal bei dir persönlich. Gute Zeit.
