    This is the BEST tip I have ever seen, mainly because its something I needed from Resolve but never knew how to achieve it.

    Great video, Jay! One alternative method I've used is to put one clip above the other in the timeline then reduce the opacity of the top clip. That way you can adjust it precisely to the clip underneath. Once adjusted move into place and set opacity back to 100%.

    I don't do that much editing but I have used the grid a few times - Can you not add the grid to the adjustment layer, then modify the grid to something a lot simple and just move the line to where you want it? And then save the adjustment layer to different grids that you may use in the future. Watching that edit, the eyeballs in the guide worked well, but not really sure the girl edit did. The focus point in the clip in the first one was definitely on her, but the next two were establishing shots to show the environment, the subway train flying by and then the city scape. If they don't cut well then that is more of an argument for a transition - it worked out okay for you on that, but if the camera movement didn't pull out or pull in, Zooming in might not be the correct edit because the environment could then be confusing for the viewer. I do wish that Resolve had guidlines like Photoshop where you could just drag a vertical and or horizontal and place it as an overlay, might be a good suggestion for the Resolve suggestion box.

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can edit the grid, but considering I tend to do this and horizon adjustment in the same node, I typically don't edit it. And yes, if the shots didn't push in or pull out, than I would have done some kind of transition, but those camera movement really make the girl the focus at the end of the subway clip and the beginning of the city clip.

    Yo Jay !! Big question mark ! Would you sacrifice your composition for eye tracing or the other way around ?
    Of course in the best of worlds the footage should be shot with the edit in mind (RIP Mr. Hitchcock), but if you had to ?

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct. Hopefully the footage was shot with the edit in mind, but in the case that it doesn't, I think it's a judgement call. In this example, the composition wasn't compromised too much, so it worked out. In some cases that won't be the case. In narrative projects, Emotion and Story are king, so definitely sacrifice eye trace before those.

  • @MatthewDoebler
    @MatthewDoebler 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You know, it's interesting. Because I always learned ABOUT eye-trace, but I never understood the idea to be "don't make viewers move their eyes". I understood it to be "know when your viewers need to move their eyes". Just as in the timing of edits affecting the overall quality of the scene, I understood sophisticated eye trace to involve studying HOW FREQUENTLY a viewer had to move their eyes around on the screen. (And by adjusting that frequency, you could change the mood of the scene.)
    But KEEPING the viewer's eye in the same place? I'd never played with that. But it sure looks good on this video. It's worth a project that gives it a try!

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha thanks Matthew! Yeah, minimizing the movement of the eyes between cuts is really good for making cuts less noticeable, which will help bring the audience deeper into the story. I've always been taught that if the average viewer can notice an edit, you're doing something wrong lol.

    • @MatthewDoebler
      @MatthewDoebler 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JayLippman You've had me thinking about this a lot recently. On the one hand, surely the name of the game can't be to never have the viewer's eye move during a scene. If that was the case, how would you edit a dialogue scene where the viewer's eye MUST relocate at every cut to keep track of the two people who are speaking to each other? On the other hand, the tennis match (back-and-forth) that is created by that type of editing is predictable.
      Your point is probably well taken in a less predictable editing environment, where the eye doesn't KNOW where to go (unless--of course--you are TRYING to create tension by forcing the eye to struggle to find what it wants).
      Furthermore, I wonder how the plan for eye motion changes, depending on the size of the screen (or the viewer's attention when watching the video ... someone sitting in a theater has a different level of attention and capacity to pay attention than somebody watching a TH-cam video on their phone on a bus).
      ANYHOW, I REALLY got to thinking about this the other day when I was watching a video in VR goggles. The whole thing is 360 degrees. So if the video makers don't guide you to know where to look, you won't know. They have to guide not only your eyes, but your whole head. If something happens behind you and you aren't planning to be looking there, you won't see it. So the creators MUST have thought through "the viewer will be looking here, then here, then here".
      Same story on the tiny screen. Micro-perspective. (Hence the grid--small screen, small adjustments.)

  • @bragefuglseth3505

    On the talking head, I personally would adjust the anchor point of the clip to between the eyes instead. That way, the clip zooms towards my face automatically as I adjust it. However, when adjusting things like horizons, the grid is an useful tool :)

      @JayLippman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    When individual clips have a lot of movement (push/pull, zoom, pan, etc) the eye will automatically follow the main subject. So should the general principle in those circumstances be to harmonize the end of clip 1 with the beginning of clip 2, the end of clip 2 with the beginning of clip 3, and so on?

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In a perfect world, the project will be shot with this in mind. If it's not, than preserve emotion and story first. Of the 6 rules of editing, eye trace is 4th in order of importance, so only line it up if it doesn't take away from Emotion, Story, or Rhythm.
