This is a review of the ThinkPad T15g Gen1 Performance Laptop PC. Great video. Thanks for the info. I have just orderd one. Same spec but with i9, very marginal increase in tests what I could see. But i Hope it will atleast give some extra boost When doing big rendering.
Feels like the bulky build can handle it.

thanks for the tour! i'm not sure why this isn't a more widely covered laptop the specs are insane. is it massively loud?
The fans can get a bit loud when it's really working on something
Couple things. I know the T15g gen2 was not the subject of this video but it is a little different and similar. The door which covers the memory under the keyboard has 3 screws instead of just one and that door was difficult to get on and off. Finally you showed how to get the keyboard off but you didn't show how to get it back on. Getting the keyboard off was easy but getting it back on was extremely difficult. Thanks to your video and 2+ hours of work I was able to do my upgrade and everything is working but this was way harder than it had to be. I did a similar operation with a Dell Precision and it was so easy compared to this. Like you said this isn't a laptop as much as it is a portable workstation and with 128gb of memory + the RTX 3080 with 16gb of VRAM its perfect for my AI/ML development work. Your video helped a lot!
I just did the same thing (upgraded factor 32gb to 128gb) with my T15g gen2 and didn't have too much trouble. Entire upgrade took five minutes. Took forever to post when I powered on, which scared me for a minute, but then it booted normally. Reinstalling the keyboard was a little tricky; had to make sure the tabs at the bottom were depressed while applying pressure from the top of the keyboard laterally towards the bottom.
@@AmbroseAdvisors1 I think it takes so long to boot that first time was because of the BIOS configuration. When you change memory in Dells for example, the first time it boots the process stops and asks you to go into the BIOS because of the change in memory. You go in, save and then you're OK but with the Lenovo it doesn't stop and it does the update for you but it takes a while that first time. Reinstalling that keyboard gave me fits but we finally got it working. Congratulations!

How do you like the keyboard? Is the offset typing position due to the numpad bothersome? How is the 1080p versus the 4k displays?
Obviously 4K would be better but is more expensive. My regular desktop keyboard has a numpad as well, so I'm pretty used to the layout.

One question, I've been investigating about this laptop and some people have thermal throttling problems. Have you have any issue with it? What is the frequency your GPU and CPU are running in? Thank you for the video.
I can't speak directly to this because it was purchased for a customer. They have been running CAD with no complaints.
Hey Adrián, it's a pretty decent laptop overall but the thermals leave alot to be desired. It seems Lenovo set the max TDP boost to be 90w and it reallly gets hot when both gpu and cpu are getting hit. The gpu in games for example will get to 70c with 53% load and the cpu will hover around 90C+. I've seen the cpu get pinned at 100c before!
Is it good for gaming. Does it have good cooling? I have legion for gaming but i prefer thinkpads because of their build quality
It would be fine for gaming but the 2080 graphics card is getting older now.

I read in some reviews that battery life is not good, and work only for 1-1.5 hours. Please anyone used this laptop, tell me .
I've been working with this laptop since November 2020 and it works as expected. The battery is not great but, using Windows 10 battery options, it can work for 2 to 3 hours and with a lighter workload (Google Chrome, email, Office, etc). Because of the pandemic I've been using it indoors connected to the power outlet most of the time.
Is that cooling a vapour chamber? How hot & noisy does it run?
I'm not sure if it is vapor chamber, but I doubt it. It does run warm when pushed hard, and you can certainly hear the fans.
Thinkpad nerd here, 3 months late. This is a hot running machine, under boost the cpu and gpu tap 90 watts each, and mine would regularly hit 90-95°C before repasting which only brought it down a few degrees. Granted this hardware is designed to operate that way, but it is distinctly a hot and relatively loud machine.
The T15G is nearly identical to a P15 mobile workstation, however you lose the ISV certifications of the enterprise tier hardware (intel xeons and nvidia Quadros). It’s power and thermal standards aren’t designed around an office environment, and compared to the P15 it’s an extremely well performing machine at the expense of noise and thermals. A P15 will do way better in that regard as it’s designed in its power and thermal plans to run quieter and cooler.

Depending on configuration, they are $2000 to $3500 or so. Not sure what you mean by "what are the thermals", but with dedicated graphics, the fans definitely run a lot.

What brand of memory?
Samsung PC4-3200 in this one. Another laptop manufactured on a different day may have different memory, FYI.

No. They are soldered in
I like it, but why'd they have to make the screen look so.... 2010? Gimme the 16:10 slim bezels on my workstations! At times I feel like they purposely make the T-series look less sexy to sell more X1-series products.
I think they pick their battles on where to put the money, but I get what you are saying. I don't understand why people like 16:10 though!

Could I add a 5g card to it?
The brochure says: Integrated Mobile Broadband 4G LTE-A, Fibocom L860-GL, MIMO 4x4, M.2 card
So probably no 5G option.
I know 100W isn't enough to use this full power, but can it at least charge over a USB-C port?
The Thunderbolt 3 Type-C and the USB 3.2 Type-C ports say they support USB PD (Power Delivery). So, that should mean you can either trickle charge (with the PC off) via Type-C, or that it will charge, but the battery will die faster than it will charge via Type-C.
@@ZipTieNinja That's good to hear. I was able to browse the internet on the P50 using a 60W charger, so I can probably run fine on a 100W USB-C charger, as long as I'm not really using the GPU
Is it good for gaming?

I game on mine. Not top tier just TF2 and BIO Shock 2 but the fans do get fairly loud, temps do creep up about 80C CPU, mid to high 80'sC GPU. i9 and RTX 2080, with headphones on I don't hear the fans except at really quiet places in game.
