@@colincolincarroll Makes sense. Just seems hard to get blank kites plus the low vs high split thing. Perhaps it's an option to use multiple riders and then make the results anonymous. Or, like the Stig, make the pro anonymous. Anyway, the content is great, keep it coming!
This concept has been long overdue and is absolutely needed. Big kite magazines etc. "review" kites and it's all amazing, always. It's basically just commercials disguised as reviews. The only way to really know how good a kite is for certain conditions and styles is to fly them back to back, same conditions, same riders. The fact that you have a legend like Youri doing this and sharing his thoughts is amazing. I always try as many kites as possible before buying (thank god for the concept of test kites/test days of kiteshops), but that is not always possible. I look forward to future vids of the same concept, especially for wave kites, as they are often miles apart in terms of feel and handling.
Love this videos! Would like to see CORE kites vs those ones. BTW Whoever chose music for this and previous episodes knows his/her job well, amazing stuff.
What i seem to understand from kite design is that modern kites are all amazing but they have tradeoffs..understanding them is why this test is so epic: i’d really like to see all the major brands participating: duotone evo, core nexus, naish triad/pivot, eleveight RS, f one bandit, cabrinha etc
Thinking also of sizes. For examples a bandit in 9m or 10m are so different! never liked them in 10m and over cause they are slow and terrible bar pressure but I ride the 9m for more than 10years and I love it..
I listened to the mega pod and there is one thing that I want to point out that differs between Stab in the Dark and and the Blank Kite Test. In Stab in the Dark the surfers rate the boards only with regard to their own preference -> what Board do they choose in the conditions they rode it in. In the Freeride Blank Kite Test, Youri put into account what he thinks makes a great Freeride kite but not necessarily what he personally likes best with his riding style in the given conditions. If he would rate it just based on his own preference for his riding style (like in SID), I would absolutely love the elimination format. When taking other factors (desired characteristics for the intended target group of freeride kites) into account like he did, testing all kites till the end may be better, at least as long as it is a more limited number of tested kites. But honestly, great stuff. Only putting so much thought into it because it is an amazing format and very well executed. And Youri is a god.
Great one! Such a resource. I really hope that this series is getting established and endorsed by many other brands soon. Though, I am not the biggest fan of the elimination thing and would much prefer a ranking by the rider in the very end. But anyways, great job, excited for the next ones. Freestylekite series and Wavekite series next please! :D
I loved the kiteboarding history bit. Also I feel like eliminating kites is that good, would prefer if there would be like a score for each discipline or whatever. Never watched stab in the dark but I feel like testing kites and testing surfboards is quite different.
@@colincolincarroll I hope next year more brands take up the challange but it doesn't look good when a kite that's literally 2x the price gets eliminated 2nd 😂. I bet duotone is never gonna send blank regular and SLS version of the same kite for direct comparison 😂
@@bartoszgolo7501 if anything that is exactly what this kind of test is perfect for! The kite industry is taking the pisssss with their prices constantly going up everywhere for almost no major changes to the product.
Brilliant work!! Keep them coming. I will say I have a bunch of time on 10m Rise. It is 100% faster than any 5 strut kite I have ever flown- xr, edge, rebel, orbit all much slower. Orbit only one that even comes close. And the Rise is faster looping with better catch than Evo SLS also. It does have some bar feedback- but I’m wondering if he had it on knot too close to kite on back lines. Since he doesn’t trim his bar that can create some increased bar pressure. Cheers 🤙
Agreed. I don’t think the rise fits squarely into the freeride category. It’s more of a big air freeride kite. I love mine and you do need to fly it some to pull out it’s incredible performance. Put in your big air test please. Cheers, also it does unhook really well.
Keep the kites in and score the kites on points, its unfair to eliminate kites and not give them a chance in all conditions. Otherwise nice work, love the Youri tribute
All 4 kites were ridden in all conditions. But as each kite is eliminated they don't feature in the future episodes. So next episode will be just the final two. Hope that makes sense.
I really look up to him like he was my big brother and it was one of the when not the best week of my live, when I attended freestyle coaching week in Tarifa with Youri eight years ago.
The videos are great. Maybe having a write-up that goes more in detail, with some scoring and comments would be even better. And I wouldn’t remove a kite before testing it in all conditions. The ozone enduro could be a good hf kite for example…
Do you already have the agreement of some brands to do another test like that? I have a feeling they'll be very hesitant once they see those videos, for once that we don't have review of gear where it's only positive opinions.
10:45 The real final of this KOTA was Liam vs Marc in semi-final. I wish they would have met in final instead. Hence the dominant performance from Marc in final
Is there a reason you're testing the OR Rise over the Flite or the Roam? Seems like a lot of the complaints Youri's having about that kite might not be present if he were testing OR's 'proper' freeride kite. He literally points that out towards the end no?
We were thinking this too. But OR were asked to provide a 10m freeride + 9m big-air kite. This is what they sent - possibly supply issues their end. Was quite a tight time frame. Hope to get the Flite and Roam in future series 100%.
Love this! Do the kites really have to be blank?! Youri is obviously willing to share his thoughts, give him some regular kites to test!
yes, that is literally the point of this entire thing.
@@MrJamesohh The point is getting an unbiased review from someone who really knows kites. I'm pretty sure Youri doesn't care what brand it is.
Dont know if slingshot would be happy about that
the blankness is less about the bias and more about protecting the rider, allowing them to speak freely without brands being able to get all shouty
