    Werewolves battle an army of spiders is a perfect description of '05.
    (Although '05 is a controversial year, I still love how they added spinners)

      I was also going to make a joke about Rhotuka spinners being air-Beyblades, but I didn't have the time for it. Glad you enjoyed the one about werewolves.

    3:45 Correction: It has long been known that Matoran genders are entirely based on their personality, and have nothing to do with body types. Greg Farshtey recently revealed that because of this Matoran can occasionally be "mis-coded" and become the opposite gender to their respective element. It's unclear weather he means by this that the machines that create Matoran occasionaly make the wrong gender, or if the Great Beings created more opposite gender Matoran/Toa than just Orde, but it does show that there are a small number of female Ta-Matoran or male Ga-Matoran out there. It's also well known that Matoran that are "eccentric" are more likely to become Toa (ex. Kruka always hummed in a village were sound was forbidden, Takua always explored the island when staying put was the norm) and if you ask me being the only off gender member of your tribe would count as an being eccentric.
    So long story short it's unlikely we'd see a female Toa of Fire, but it's not impossible.

      @@Lavapasta I saw this video just today. Good summary of the 2004 and 2005 storylines. On the topic of eccentric matoran becoming toa, I've always thought that Takua's 6 companions in the Mata Nui Online Game had great potential to become toa themselves. Especially Taipu, who enjoyed exploration and adventure. It's too bad that we will never see that happen.

    Metru nui as a location is actually quite important, its technically the logistical centrum for the Bionicle universe, as it is located in the head/brain of Mata Nui, it probably have some improtant functions anatomically for the Gigantic robot. Metru nui is also functions as a capital city for the matoran of the bionicle universe, as it is the largest city in the matoran universe and it probably have the most important Archives for information on several topics (Ko-Metru), such as the history of the universe, geographics, Technology and important artifacts. Metru nui also have an entire District dedicated to architecture (po metru), Ta Metru contributes to the universe by being the largest (possibly second largest after the island of Artakha) produce of metal ware, masks, weapons, discs, Technology etc. Metru nui also function as a bastion against the order of makuta, the dark Hunters, League of 6 Kingdoms and other threats to the order of mata nui/toa.

    Toa, matoran, and turaga of water, lightning, and psionics(mind stuff) are female. Toa, matoran, and turaga of light and shadow can be either gender. Toa, matoran, and turaga of fire, earth, stone, ice, air, jungle/the green, sonics(sound), gravity, iron, magnetism, and gravity are all male. The only exception is Toa Orde, the first toa of psionics, as he was male.
    Gender is mostly just a label, especially in bionicle, bionicles don't have private parts

      @Lavapasta  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Unless something in my personal life gets in the way or I don't have the time for it, I am planning to cover the rest of G1 in the future. Do you think the Ignition would work better as a video focusing on 2006-2007-AND 2008, or should I include 2008 alongside 2009-2010?

    • @Modularity
      @Modularity 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The way we split it up was having the Ignition Trilogy and the Bara Magna years as their own separate episodes, since they represent distinct arcs in Bionicle's narrative.

    I don't agree about Toa Hordika. They had masks, but they used the Bohrok eyes to make them more akin to Visorak, who's venom has mutated them. It makes perfect sense that once mutated by Visorak, the Toa would begin to resemble them as the visorak venom consumes them. The Hordika masks were an experiment in different maks design, and I like that. Just like the Inika rubber masks on the glowing green heads. It would be boring if all the masks were attachable to Metru/Mata heads, just like they were post-2006. Plus, the combination of gear function elbow with a ball socket joint arm was very interesting.

    Actually, not all Matorans has the potential to become Toa, only a select few has this special power inside them. But that doesn't make protecting them less important. As they are needed for Mata Nui to survive.
    But i'm so lucky I got all six Great Discs :D

    • @ugly-control
      @ugly-control 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But I think in your interpretation, you're still correct. Unless someone specific knows a prophecy of some sort, no one knows for sure which Matoran will become Toa. Hence, it's important to protect all of them. You never know which ones will rise above the rest.

    Ok please dont take this the wrong way I'm all for equal representation in all things, but should that really be a primary concern over writing a good story? I'll admit it does pose some logistical problems but wouldn't the last thing you want in a grand story like this are token girls who's only reason for existing being to fulfill some sort of quota? Id sure hope not.

    05 may have been a poor year for Bionicle when the Toa Metru became Toa Hordikas, I still got to admit that the 05 Bionicle movie Web Of Shadows is the best Bionicle movie. Where it focused more on the characters. And I still love the conflict with Vakama and Matau at the end of movie, Obi-Wan vs Anakin style. Spoilers.

    Love the Vahki. Good sets, bit loose with that gearbox function, but incredibly distinctive with their heads and staffs. Good rank and file villains.
    I also like 2005 a decent amount. It is literally the only filler saga, which feels weird in a long-winded series (wouldn't there be more? Or shouldn't there be less?), but I had a Visohrak set (green) and loved it. I also had an accompanying book about rahi and that was pretty cool, especially seeing how it was mostly MOCs. Never got the Hordika sets; I actually wasn't aware of them until it was too late. I fell off with Bionicle around late 2005 and through 2006. And while they are ugly, careful what you call palette swaps. That was Bionicle's bread and butter for canister sets.

They did have masks, they're in the pictures you showed, and they all had unique weapons. You're being completely unfair for no good reason.

    "The city of the Great Spirit, my island home... refound..."
    -Turaga Vakama, BIONICLE: Mask of Light
    Metru Nui, the City of Legends, was the island that formed Mata Nui's brain. It was inhabited by 1000 Matoran up until 0 BGC, at which time new Matoran from other locations moved in when their homes were destroyed. The location was key to the health of Mata Nui, and if the Matoran of the city stopped working, Mata Nui would fall ill and slowly begin to die. It was found directly beneath Mata Nui, in the middle of the Silver Sea.
    Contents[show]
    History Edit
    The city of Metru Nui was founded and built roughly a hundred thousand years ago, around the same time that the Brotherhood of Makuta and Order of Mata Nui were founded. Metru Nui's foundations were laid by the Great Beings, and the rest was built by Matoran. It is also known that Helryx was somehow involved in this project. Since then, it has been the ecumenopolis homeland of the Matoran for millennia.
    Around eighty thousand years ago, a dispute between Ta-Matoran and Po-Matoran, regarding boundaries and trade escalated into a civil war in which Ga-Matoran, Onu-Matoran and Ta-Matoran fought against Le-Matoran, Ko-Matoran and Po-Matoran. This civil war caused the "Great Disruption", an event that weakened the Great Spirit. Little else is known about the four-hundred-year conflict, but the Brotherhood of Makuta ended the fighting and banished the war leaders to a place known as "the Pit". The Order of Mata Nui placed an agent in the city to ward off further conflicts.
    The Great Cataclysm
    Metru Nui was definitely not devoid of conflict after the war, however. 1300 years ago, Teridax infected the Great Spirit with a virus that caused Mata Nui to gradually lose consciousness. 300 years later, the Brotherhood of Makuta set in motion a plan to overthrow Mata Nui and take over the Matoran Universe. Teridax disguised himself as Turaga Dume and hired three Dark Hunters, Nidhiki and Krekka inside the city and "Eliminator" outside it, to get rid of the Toa Teams protecting Metru Nui at the time. He succeeded, but not before Toa Lhikan created six new toa to guard the city: the Toa Metru. For their first mission, these new Toa destroyed the Morbuzahkh plant that was threatening the city with the help of the Great Kanoka Disks. The Toa Metru hoped that this would prove them to be heroes to Turaga Dume and that he would name them the new protectors of Metru Nui, but Dume (Teridax in disguise), accused them of being traitors. He ordered the Vahki and Dark Hunters to eliminate them while he started gathering all the Matoran and putting them into Matoran Pods. The Toa Metru then faced him and imprisoned him in a protodermic cage. However, the Visorak hordes soon took over Metru Nui but were defeated by the transformed Toa Metru with the help of Keetongu and the Rahaga. In the process, the Toa accidentally released Teridax from his prison, but managed to save the Matoran and bring them all to Mata Nui. Metru Nui was then watched over by the real Dume, Keetongu and the Rahaga for 1,000 years. During that time, only one gate to the waters around Metru Nui was open.
    Matoran Exodus
    Metru Nui would wait until Makuta was defeated again by the Toa Mata, and later, Takanuva. After the battle over the Mask of Light, the gate to Metru Nui via Mangaia was once again opened. The Matoran made their way to their "old" home, and settled it once again. The battle against Teridax was taken to other fronts, and Metru Nui was finally safe. The Matoran first settled in Po-Metru because it was the least damaged. They started to rebuild Metru Nui, but weren't finished before the Staff of Artakha was used on Daxia and repaired the whole island. During this time, the Matoran from Karzahni were moved onto the island by the Toa Nuva.
    During the Destiny War, the Rahaga returned to Metru Nui as Toa Hagah, along with the mutated Piraka Zaktan, in order to try and stop Makuta before he took over the mind of Mata Nui and the Toa Nuva would awaken the Great Spirit with Teridax in his body. Makuta made the Toa Hagah leave, thinking they had won the battle, but had not returned to the surface yet.
    Also, an Order of Mata Nui agent sent Toa Mahri Jaller, Hahli and Nuparu to Artidax with the Heart of the Visorak, in order to destroy that species once and for all. Their boat was stolen by Takadox, but they managed to escape the island.
    When the Toa Nuva awakened Mata Nui, they returned to Metru Nui with the Av-Matoran of Karda Nui to celebrate their destiny being achieved at long last. However, the celebration was interrupted by Teridax's announcement that his plan 80,000 years in the making had finally been accomplished. Rahkshi swarmed into Metru Nui to ensure the Matoran kept working so that the new Great Spirit, Makuta, would not succumb to illness like Mata Nui did twice.
    The Matoran, Toa, and Turaga of Metru Nui gathered together in the Archives for safety from the Rahkshi. They met up with Krahka, who volunteered to help them get through tunnels that go to the shore, steal a boat, and meet up with some of the other less than 50 Toa left in the universe. It is unknown how well this plan worked, but since Teridax ensured that he got rid of all possible threats to him in his universe (the other Makuta, Mata Nui's spirit, and the Ignika), it is doubtful anything became of it.
    The moon that killed Makuta struck his head, where Metru Nui was. The impact badly damaged the city, even worse than the Great Cataclysm, but many Matoran survived and evacuated to Spherus Magna.
    PositionEdit
    Metru Nui as seen from the air
    Metru Nui was located in Mata Nui's head, and served as his brain. As such, it was the northernmost island in the universe. It was nearby the following islands:
    Karzahni to the south, connected to Metru Nui via series of mountain ranges and a short isthmus, jutting into the Karzahni dome.
    Xia to the south-east, it can be reached by sailing out of Metru Nui through the main southern sea gate, and then turning sharply east, following the Great Barrier.
    Zakaz was directly south of Metru Nui, but could presumably not be reached by simply sailing south because the island of Karzahni would be in the way.
    EnvironmentEdit
    City divided by Districts
    The city of Metru Nui was, like the rest of the Matoran universe, inside of the Great Spirit. The Matoran living there were unaware of this, however; mists obscured the cavern walls (called "the Great Barrier") and gave the appearance of a normal sky. There were also two holes in the ceiling, which looked like two suns to Matoran living on Metru Nui, but were in actuality the eyes of Mata Nui. These two holes had a barrier over them so water or other things would not be able to fall through. One hole is believed to be in Naho Bay on the island called Mata Nui, while the other under the ice of Mount Ihu on the same island. The city also stood in the center of a vast "Silver Sea" of Liquid Protodermis.
    District SystemEdit
    The population of Metru Nui was dispersed throughout six "districts", each specializing in a specific element and occupation, and the central point where many things took place.
    Coliseum Edit
    Coliseum
    The Coliseum was at the center of the city of Metru Nui, where the borders of the six districts met. It was where sporting events such as Akilini took place, as well as being the main power station for the city. It also served as the Turaga's home. When the Visorak invaded the city, they made the Coliseum their main nesting grounds.
    It is unknown who built it and for what purpose. But whatever the case, the Turaga called Dume has always used it as his residence and place to govern the city from. In the Toa\Dark Hunter War, the Toa used it as their HQ, sending the Toa on missions from there. After the Toa won the war, sporting events resumed.
    During the rise of the Makuta of Metru Nui, he used it to store the Matoran in its basement. The Toa Metru saved six, but vowed to return and rescue the others. During their absence, Sidorak and Roodaka took over the Coliseum and made it the Visorak base (under the orders of Teridax). The Toa Hordika, aided by the Rahaga, saved the Matoran and defeated the Visorak hordes. This Toa victory was known as the Final Battle for Metru Nui. The battle of Metru Nui was the battle where Sidorak was killed by Keetongu.
    The Toa and Matoran left the city for Mata Nui, but when it was rebuilt, they came back.

    05 i still think to this day is better than the ignition trilogy which was the same 3 years in a row back to back. It took me a while to realize the reason why i wasn't grabbed by 06 onward and it wasn't just because of the ugly designs of the Toa inika (07 was the best imo). A golden mask mgguffin, our heroes having to fight 6 villains that wrecked the Toa Nuva like they were nothing, it was 03 all over again. 04 also had a golden mcguffin mask ala the mask of Time but it wasn't the main focus, most of it involved collecting disks to fight a plant and Makuta beginning his plans while our heroes ran away being held as impostors by the police force. Werewolves vs spiders sound a lot more original by comparison if you ask me even though it practically was riding off Star Wars Episode III revenge of the Sith that came out that same year.

    2005 was the year that was quite literally forced by lego, the ignition trilogy was in development but not finished, so the creator was forced to make some filler.

    It's a fine video, but I'm surprised that you skipped over the search for the masks and the Matoran so quickly. Speaking of which, you are aware that there is more than one female Matoran type, right? Matoran of water, lightning, and psionics are all female, and Matoran of light could be either male or female. Also, you have all the other Bionicle species, like Roodka's matriarchal Vortix.
    (Also, you won't spoil Bionicle 2, but you give away the robot twist in the first part?)

    • @Lavapasta
      @Lavapasta  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am aware about female lightning and psionic Matoran as well as female Av-Matoran, but they are not present in the official Bionicle toy line and thus fill a background role in the story. There is a female shadow Matoran (corrupted Av-Matoran) in 2008, but she also continues the same blue color scheme as many other female Bionicle characters and (in set form) functions as an antagonist. For the non-Matoran species that do exist in the toy line and thus have an active role in the plot, we have the villainous Gahdok and Cahdok (one is BLUE AGAIN while the other is red), the 6-canister combiner Kralhi who was an antagonist that later turned good but was still kind of a background character, the memorable Roodaka who was also mainly a villain, and the Glatorian Kiina who IS a protagonist but also, blue and water-themed. Basically, my point is that all of the heroic female protagonists that appear in the Bionicle toy sets are always one specific color, and all of the female characters that feature a different color have been villains at some point. It's just not a creative use of character or color to me.
      I gave away the robot twist in Part 1 because it re-contextualizes the first 3 years of Bionicle's story and makes it more interesting from a story perspective. With Legends of Metru Nui, there's a nice legacy thing with Lhikan's mask, but I don't think that the twist of the film is that important to give away.

      You're not wrong, I simply don't see it as that big of a deal. In fact in the later years with Kiina, I think t was just to keep brand consistency. Oh, and there's also Gohrast, who, while being a antagonist, does try to save the Toa, is female, and is green.

  • @Luka1180

    You are technically not correct. We may very well get to see a Toa of Fire that’s a female, for the simple fact that the machines making the Matoran can be reprogrammed to do any gender. Only the Great Beings know how to, though. So, if Greg EVER finishes The Yesterday Quest (ok, highly unlikely that’s gonna happen, I’ll give you that…) it would surely have ended with the Matoran Universe inhabitants gaining the knowledge of how to do this. I’m sure of that. First of the serial was planned by Greg Farshtey to take the group of characters back to where they were made, and also to meet Great Beings, and secondly one of the Toa is literally a Toa of Psionics who’s male, as he was made before the gender lock was put in place, hence I’m sure gender and identity and such was gonna be a major theme.
