    @21:56 loud sound warning! turn your sound down viewers! General tip for everyone: if you're messing with filter resonance, or delay with long/infinite feedback, place a limiter in your FX chain, your ears will thank you! (I would take advantage of the MFX Limiter via the MFX button or Ben Coe's scatter MFX method to quickly add a limiter when sound designing on the mc101

    The main difference between the TVF and the vcf filters is that the TVF filters are verry old and sound pretty bad digital when resonance is cranked up
    These filters also occur in all the jv - xv -previous fantom series and integra in the PCM engine
    Except for the jd800 and JD990 , the TVF filters in those sound amazing
    The VCF filters are newer and better analogue filter models ( also occuring in the jupiter 80 , integra , fa series ) based on Moog , prophet , roland jup , these sound a lot better

    What a useful tutorial - and what a useful synth!! This is deeper than Hype on the MPC One, and gives you so many options for sound design. Virtual analog PWM with a unique PCM transient? You've got it, with a couple more oscillators to spare. Amazing! I'm still skeptical about the overall workflow of the MC-101 as a groovebox, but as a portable sound module and sound design synthesizer, this is pretty dope. 🌟

  • @SwiftDreamer
    @SwiftDreamer ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @11:52 it sounds like the initial transient is a real sound/sample that fades into a synthesized sound to give the sound the illusion of an infinite sustain. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure synths like the Roland D-50 & maybe the JD800 were notorious for building patches like this (i think the concept was considered PCM synthesis, but not entirely sure, will double check, may edit this comment for accuracy), so it seems like there are plenty of sound in the ZenCore engine with patches like this

    • @BenCoeMusic
      @BenCoeMusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that’s the case with the d-50 but my impression was that it had something similar to the partials we have in zen-core. Where we could do something similar by using pcm and VA in different partials, I didn’t really expect it in just one pcm sample, you know? Keystep 37 or Launchkey Mini MK3 are great portable midi keys that can be used with a MIDI cable and a power bank. I own both and love using them with my 101. The Launchkey will require a 3.5mm to standard MIDI dongle but it’s great for on the go.

    • @BenCoeMusic
      @BenCoeMusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use my Launchpad x most of the time because it’s become my preferred note-input device. I have it connected through a raspberry pi which powers the 101 and the Launchpad. Agreed it’s slightly less portable though I keep them in a little stack with a battery to move about the house. I’m very nearly finished with my stage-ready case for two launchpads, the sensel morph, 101, battery pack, and raspberry pi in a guitar-sized instrument. Keystep and launchkey like Stuart said are also great options.

    • @shmish

      @@shmish I actually use the raspberry pi for midi as well as power. Up to 3 usb controllers can be plugged straight into the pi along with the 101, and it moves the midi between them as well as provides power. It’s super convenient, and I got the pi 3b before they got so difficult to buy, so it was a lot cheaper than most commercial usb midi hosts. I set the pi up as described here neuma.studio/rpi-as-midi-host.html (not my tutorial, I just followed it).

    In Zenology pro each partial has a key range parameter so you can effectively create splits and zones . Is that parameter available here as well ? If so that opens up each track to be sudo multi-timbrel with limitations of poly modes etc. ,but a thought none the less .

    • @BenCoeMusic
      @BenCoeMusic  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfortunately that feature isn’t available here on the 101. However I’ve had success making at least a two part keyboard split by mapping keytracking to level in the mod matrix as positive for one partial and negative for another partial, then setting one partial to start high and the other to start low. It isn’t perfect and you’ll hear overlap in the middle octave but like for little particular splits it’s doable. The alternative would be for someone to make a utility patch in Zenology pro that has the partial splits already made that you could then load your own samples into from the 101. I think that would work. I’ll look into it.

    Does the device allow to set different MIDI channels and add a favourite sound to each one? I am considering it to replace my current sound module and use channel + - instructions from the keytar to change between the sounds.
    Does the Roland MC 101 have that functionality, so it can replace Integra/Sonic Cell modules? Or not?
    Even if it didn't, I like the sounds a lot. Just to see if I should sell the Sonic Cell or keep it.

    • @BenCoeMusic
      @BenCoeMusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can do that a little bit but not across all 16 midi channels. You can set each of the 4 tracks to respond to its own midi channel though, so that works if you cycle through just 4 channels.
      When playing in a band with the 101 as a sound module through my keytar-ish instrument, I set up a project which has all my presets loaded into it (16 sounds per track x 4 tracks = 64 possible sounds) then you can set up the mc-101 to scene changing mode where pressing one pad will change the scene, which will switch the sounds for all 4 midi channels. So if one song requires 3 different sounds, between songs I’ll press the button on the 101 to call the appropriate scene, then during the song I can switch between the 4 midi channels from my instrument as needed.
      You can also change sounds on each channel by sending midi program change messages on that channel, or change whole scenes by sending program change messages on a different channel, if your keytar can do that it can be convenient.
      One more thing you can’t browse the sounds by doing any of these, you have to set up each sound in its own clip ahead of time and then you’re changing clips with the above operations, which changes the sound.
      Hope that helps, I used the mc-101 as a live sound module for a while with my keytar, if you have any more questions don’t hesitate to ask.

I am likely wrong but I remember it being discussed somewhere as a hardware limitation, that there’s a particular chip doing the processing in the 101 and 707 and the fantoms and Jupiter etc have 1-3 extra versions of that chip which allows for more complicated synthesis and sampling. Again I’m probably wrong that’s just a distant memory.
      In any case I’m still very excited we have this much, I think it’s really powerful as it is.

    Will the Mc 707 do the same ?

    • @BenCoeMusic
      @BenCoeMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it should but most of the synth editing features have been present in the 707 since the beginning, they’re brand new on the 101!

    So it is virtual analog now ?

    • @suga4all
      @suga4all ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its Rolands ZenCore engine which covers a large variety of modelling options, including a VA engine called ABM (Analog Behavior Modelling). The engine has always been the same, but with 1.8 you finally can fully programm it like on the Fantom series, or the bigger MC707

      @@effebidi9677 Yes, you are right. It seemed to be a marketing decision to "close" the MC101, perhaps in favour of the MC707 sales. Yet, it seemed to be a false decision so they corrected it (and almost shamefully hiding it only as a sidenote of the official 1.8 video).

      @@suga4all mmm .. dunno... I truly think they hide it from beginning so they could sell for both lazy and curious puublic, then, when the mc-101 slowed its selling Roland simply put the truth on air , and the synthesists enthisast came to know.... so they can think of it, choose it and buy it ( if they now need something Roland with 4 channels :D ) ................... I think there are serveral ways to make this kind of market..
      For example one fair way could be when the company sells only one main piece of gear investing all their blood in that one project which is possibly a great one.... But that's not the Roland story .

    Can you edit randomly generated patch?

  • @robinr22

    That editing interface is awful - I can't understand how anyone would actually want to build a patch on that. I sold mine because it was bad enough with the limited editing options it had but this is so much worse. A whole synth patch on a two line display with cryptic abbreviations is something from the 80s. It would kill me.

      I agree. The iPad has a much better user interface, for this kind of work, if you don't need hardware knobs/faders.
      But I am still interested in the MC-101, not just for making music/beats, but also because I enjoy figuring out how things work. Like a puzzle challenge, that has a musical payoff.

      Try a Yamaha TG500.....or if you really want a headache an Ensoniq Mirage (in hex). Or a DX7....with one data slider.
