- When I originally tested the 2015 Yamaha Super Tenere, one of the things I knew I would have to change was the bike’s wind management system. That is, the OEM windshield and mounting bracket. The stock shield, while nice looking, is just was not large enough to handle long rides at highway speeds. There is just a bit more buffeting than I would like to endure...So I replaced both the windscreen and the mounting bracket with new versions from Madstad.

I currently have a Triumph Sprint GT which I love but I think I need a bike with a more upright seating position . The Tenere is on that list. Great video
Spot on Craig, I just installed the bracket on my 2013 Super Tenere with the stock windshield and it is a big, big improvement. You said it made a 50% difference, I'd say more like 80%. Glad I didn't order a new windshield for it. Good advice. Thanks.

I had the Madstad windshield setup for my Ninja1000 several years back and I can attest that they work just great. Since riding my FJR1300 the automatic windscreen is a huge plus. For the Madstad, it was well worth the investment over the stock non functional screen. Can't wait for more vids on your S10!.
+Shawn Kuse Yeah I am spoiled with the electric shield on my Vision, it is a very nice feature. So far I have found a sweet spot for the Madstad that works very well. We'll see what happens this year as I try new things. Thanks!

National cycle makes those deflectors and the best windscreen .The V- Stream . With the Madstad bracket you cannot get any better

There is not much left to add to the Vision, she is pretty set. And my wife would never let me get rid of her throne...lol. The aniversary edition is a nice bike, congratulations!
my 2012 tenere has the prototype on it. Love it, mine was a 85% improvement. bracket alone. Mine was not even painted, function over fashion.

Yes I got the Madstad for my Vstrom 650 EXP this summer I love it. The stock windshield did nothing for me as I'm 6'2"

Just installed the madstad bracket along with a Givi windshield. Could not be happier, big improvement over stock setup. However, it makes me mad that you have to spend close to 500$ on a 19,000$ motorcycle. It should come with proper equipment.
I hear you, but so far I have not found any bike that comes perfect from the factory. I have had to modify all of them in some way. While it does get expensive, I have to admit it is fun to outfit my bikes and make them work for me. Ride safe!
Great video. I've heard a great deal about the madstad but never saw one in action. The accessory bar on the factory yamaha bracket is useless for a GPS or phone mount. I've got about 12k miles on my S10 and I commute all weather on it. I've found that I really prefer to get some wind on my chest and helmet during the warmer seasons to get airflow in my mesh jacket. I found I was overheating in mesh gear and couldn't figure out why. I removed the yamaha "Winglets" and was able to cool off. I keep them on the bike and install them in the rain and colder weather. I run the Yamaha "tall" shield in the low position of the stock bracket. I'm 5'11" and I only get airflow in the top of my helmet with this configuration, but more importantly, when it's raining, it puts airflow on my helmet visor to help keep the rain streaming off so I can see. Running the screen in the high position I get no airflow at all, which can be good or bad depending on the weather.
Thanks! The great thing about the Madstad bracket is how much adjust-ability you have. It really allows you to fine tune the wind flow. I agree that in the hot weather it is nice to get more air on your chest. I have a smaller screen that I can install during he warmer months. However, I will most likely leave the larger screen on for the Alaska trip.

I've been experimenting with my current windscreen, the MRA Touring for my Yamaha FZ-07. Despite being the "touring" model, it doesn't come up very high at all. In fact, it doesn't even come as high as the tops of the mirrors. So what did I do?? I took my old clear helmet visor that I haven't used in years, flipped it upside-down and drilled 3 holes symmetrically through the top of the windscreen and the bottom (actually the top) of the visor and bolted them together. I literally just finished that right now. So I ended up with the overall hight of the windscreen right at the top of the mirrors, extending it more than 3.5" high. Before I was having a lot of wind coming off the screen and hitting my shoulders, pushing wind and bugs right up under my Shoei RF-1200 helmet, which is supposed to be a top-5 quietest helmet on the market! Now, I'm hoping that it at least pushes the wind above the jawline of the helmet and reducing buffeting and noise. Can't wait to get it out and try. Wish I could add a picture here.... hmmm.

Hi Craig thanks for the useful information. One thing bugs though (as i exp this on a similar screen on my current bike) don't the large screen create some sort of sail effect on lateral winds (e.g. pulling you through the wind flow). Did you exp anything along that angle ? And another one sorry...the Mudstad bracket does replace the original mechanism, correct (e.g. does not mount over it) ? Thanks again
Sure, there are benefits and downsides to the larger shield. It blocks bugs and rain, things I needed while riding to Alaska., however you might get some sail effect in heavy crosswinds. I did not think it was too bad on my bike. Yes, the Madstad bracket replaces your stock bracket. I would check for your particular bike though.
On the Madstad windshield bracket did you use the side supports. I have had the Madstad system before but their site says to use the side supports which is a no go for me. Wanted to get your thoughts on this? I just bought a Tenere and love the bike.
I do not have side supports, but it sounds like they may have redesigned the brackets. I have not seen the new version.
would have really liked a view of the bike from further away so I could really see the full bike with the new windshield. this video was greatly appreciated though. just need to see the big picture with the screen and the bike .

Just ordered the bracket & 20 inch shield. I'm hoping to make my passenger comfortable... she gets a lot of buffeting sitting behind & above me on the 2013 S10.
I don't run with a passenger on mine, but I think it should help. I get no buffeting in front. I would suggest getting the stock lower defectors as well. Good luck!
How did decide to purchase the 22 inch windshield? Looking at the Madstad website, your height drops you in their 20 inch windscreen. If you were to purchase again, would you decide to get the 20 inch instead? I'm 5' 10", so we are close in height. I not sure what size to get and looking for some advice for a 2016 model.
+MrBenzabeast, I did not use the Madstad chart. I just measured the stock shield, which I believe is 19 inches and figured that I could easily look over the 22, which I can. There is a lot of vertical adjustment with the bracket. I also have an. 18 inch shield, which I think I will use this summer since i am not planning on so many highway miles.

No, I am 5'9" and could easily see over the screen.
If you are tall then consider the givi airflow with the madstad bracket. At 6'6 works great on my tenere.

+izzy412izzy412, I got mine 2 years ago and the Tenere style was not available at that time. I am happy with the SD though. The 22 was great on the highway and for keeping bugs off of me. Might impact mpg on a windy day, but the protection is worth it. I have an 18 as well that I think I am going to try this summer.

Quick question. I currently use the OEM screen with the MRA touring screen. Works well on the top of my helmet but it tends to be pretty turbulant right at the base of the helmet. I don’t have so much trouble with that but I am looking for something to quiet the passenger area. Any chance you use this screen with your wife? What were here thoughts? Thanks.,
The Madstad bracket makes a big difference and I have almost no buffeting. But, unfortunately my wife does not ride with me on the Tenere. It is setup for just me. Thanks!

seeing similar mileage with the both the Puig touring shield and the stock shield. The shield doesn't make much difference as far as I can tell :)
Any issue with hand guard/windscreen clearance?
I purchased a used S10 with the Madstad and my hand guards limit travel in all but lowest and foreword screen position.
No, I can't even picture how the screen would be limited by the hand guards. Even at full lock they don't come close enough to interfer with each other...
Hi, Thanks for the informative video. Do you setup your 22 inch windshield on lowest point of bracket or highest point? I use my stock windshield with stock bracket on highest point now so if I get 22 inch windshield with bracket, I like to adjust it higher if I need to. Thank you.

Thanks for your reply. I'm thinking about getting 24 inch windshield with bracket. Will it be to tall if I set it up with lowest point of bracket? I'm 6' and 30 inseam.
I can't answer that question, everyone is different. I would suggest getting some cardboard and making a template. Attach it to the top of your stock shield, so that the overall height is 24 inches. Then sit on the bike and see if it will work for you. You want to be able to see over the the top of the shield. You also want some air flowing under the bottom of the shield.

Craig if you get time could you measure what the distance is from the top bolt hole in the shield to the top of your 22" shield?
If I draw a line between the top bolt holes and then measure off of that to the highest point of the shield, it is 11.5 inches.

I am 5'9". So far the 22 is perfect.
I have a Palmer Products bracket for my NC700X that is very similar to this one. I'm taking delivery of a new S10 tomorrow and it already has a Madstad bracket on it. Your experience with it sounds identical to my experience with the Palmer Products bracket, which is good to know.
How safe is this shield I hear certain materials can be dangerous?
+SmokinZen, Madstad uses cast acryllic for their shields. If you go to their website and look at their FYIs they explain why. They point out that the F18 Hornet uses ther same material for its canopy. I have actually broken one riding off road. I hit the shield with my chest, it hurt... the shield broke into three peices but did not shatter. I guess you could argue that a polycarb shield would not have broken. That may have been true, but it also may have injured me more. I have have no way of knowing for sure. I suggest you call Madstad and ask them. Thanks.
Living Off The Slab The Madstad FAQ is very misleading with the F-18 comment. Fighter jet canopies are multi-layer laminated structures that typically use both acrylic and polycarbonate to get the best properties of each. Unfortunately, the above link doesn’t give all the details and the laminate diagram does not call out the materials in each layer, but if you read all the text you will see the hints such as “combines material properties for optimum impact and environmental performance.”. That is code for using polycarbonate for impact performance and acrylic for environmental (UV and scratch resistance) performance. They also comment that PPG materials currently in production include acrylics and polycarbonates as well as some not specified proprietary OPTICOR material.
BMW uses a multi-material composite for the same reasons as the F-18. However, since motorcycles travel at much slower speeds and can’t afford the weight of an inch thick multi-layer windshield, BMW uses a polycarbonate substrate to get strength and impact resistance and then a thin coating to get the scratch and UV protection that the acrylic outer layer provides on the F-18. This is far and away the best material combination for a motorcycle windshield. Acrylic is used by folks like Madstad for one reason: it is cheaper. It takes a fair bit of skill and equipment to properly form and coat polycarbonate.
