go to Arturo and Kleo they have cannonballs to spare. also it resets so get as many as you want. weird thing is that you can get more ammo if you have all 4 ranks of the scrounger perk. Bethesda forgot to mention that in some cases if you blow up an enemy's head it will give you some ammo just like cap collector . I find that pretty awesome. sorry this is so long :b
I don't know if anyone plays fallout for in 2021 like me, but if you actually reliably want more ammo (and something to do), build the eyebot pod in a settlement and have it search for cannonballs. You can rest in a nearby bed for an hour to speed up search. Whatever it finds will have between 30 and 40, and this can be repeated indefinitely. It also takes you to a ton of different places around the map, so good for endgame exploring.
It's entirely possible the cannon was salvaged from a royal navy vessel during the Revolutionary war or the War of 1812 and re-used by the US navy. Also, it could have been salvaged post war by the robots from a museum.
I had piper and she would judge me if I stole the chip or killed people. BUT if I shoot the woman scavenger before she talks to me, there is no penalty ^_^
With an Automatron DLC completed, you get to build a robot that finds you up to 40 cannonballs every hour, so it is a viable option as far as ammunition is concerned. Didn't know about Demolition perk increasing its damage, without it, it is a devastating weapon. I'll see what I can do with that Demolition perk engaged.
+Mitchell Gould Since radioactive elements have half lives (just go to wikipedia and read about it) and there is a saying that a cat has 9 lives plus the half lives equals 18
I'm gonna build one of these xp farms with lots of raider or gunner cages and make it a live firing range to try out weapons I rarely use. The broadside will be one of them :)
The Prydwen, if we include its vertibirds. Vertibirds can be outfitted with missiles, which would destroy the U.S.S. constitution, which is a museum piece, not a military vehicle, and its cannons are a poor anti-air defense. However, sans vertibirds, the U.S.S. constitution might actually be able to take the Prydwen down. If it can get close & pull off enough broadsides, it can cripple, force the Prydwen to land or even destroy it outright, and the Prywden has no major ship-mounted weapons of its own; relying on its knights & vertibirds for defense.
So, did a little research on the cannons on the USS Constitution.(TLDR Cannons may be accurate to the current armament of the Constitution) The Cannons were recast in 1981 but they were mistakenly cast after British cannons marked with the seal of King George the II. The restoration team mistakenly thought that the Constitution used British guns, Using enemy guns was actually a fairly common occurrence due to the high cost of building a cannon, after sinking a ship or taking a fort cannons may be salvaged or replaced entirely. So actually they may have the markings correct.
It may be statistically worse than the rocket launcher, but the Broadsider is still my favorite heavy weapon because the ammo is significantly cheaper and vendors sell enough cannonballs that I never had ammo problems. Usually 10-15 at weapons vendors and around 5 at general vendors, at 13 caps per ball. With the high per-shot damage thats plenty.

I had a few glitches with this quest. whenever there was an attack, if I shot anything but the cannons, ironsides would attack me. I finished the quest, but I found this odd.
Before I even started the quest I stumbled upon the scavengers and slaughtered all of them. I thought the USS Constitution was all enemies so I didn't aproach it :P
Unfortunately I accidentally hit the lookout when repelling the scavangers, turning all personel against me. I am unable to get it now without a loss of a lot of progress.
maybe it was on the USS constitution because...hmm...ya all I got is it could be possible that if the war of independence was the late 1700's and the date on the cannon was 1820... maybe 50 years after the war of independence Britain and america were trading in all sorts of goods again? a lot of the rifles used back then were Brown Bess's....the first Springfield's I think were made around the civil war..I could be horribly wrong though but the Springfield line is a hell of a lot older than 1906...pretty damn sure they predate metallic cartridge's.
