Wow. I am a bit in shock right now at how comprehensibly this expresses something I have yearned to finally wrap my head around for years and years but kept coming up short of understanding. Thank you Bro. Haws for taking on your wrestle and helping me with mine. This has been added to my treasured collection of must hear talks and I am so very thankful to have found it today.
I love your comments and love you experienced this. As I have been turning my listening pleasures more toward things of the Lord; I too have had this same experience actually many times in the last 3 months. I have really needed this too!

J.B. - I was watching the “Don’t Miss This” video on TH-cam for this week’s “Come Follow Me” lesson when I saw your BYU Devotional at the top of the “Up Next” column, and although it was getting late I couldn’t pass it up. Your address was so timely for me because I fall into the comparison trap repeatedly. I am getting better at recognizing it and rejecting the thoughts as they occur, but there still seems to be a never-ending procession of comparisons on my mind. Thank you for your inspired presentation, it could not have been more timely for me. Things have come full circle - as a young missionary your dad taught Connie and myself 48 years ago. Your mom and dad took us through the temple when you were just a newborn - and now I get to learn from you with the same love and spirit that your dad had when he taught us. Thank you.

I'm so glad I listened to the prompting to find a BYU devotional speech this morning and found this one. I'm going to have to listen again, and perhaps again a third and many more times.

One of the funny things about comparisons is we usually compare the good stuff but we never compare the bad stuff like we may compare our wealth to someone who's richer but we don't want to compare our health to someone who's suffering from a deadly disease. Or at least something along those lines.

Can I just say that one of my greatest accomplishments in life is that I beat you in a spelling bee once? Not gloating, it’s just that we all knew you were so intelligent, and that was a point of pride for me in the moment. You murdered me in the next round. I spelled the stupidest word wrong (it was “standard” and I was so nervous I spelled it with 2 “d”s.) I don’t agree with you religiously, but I admire your intellect and I’m glad you’re doing so well.

I don't get why members think they are some how being humble if they turn down a talk or get out of the spotlight. Seems selfish, not humble! I'm so glad you did not deprive us of this talk because you were willing to be selfless!
Edit: I realize the speaker didn't talk or mention it like it was some kind of brave action of humility, but a lot of members when they get up and say how they were thinking of going out of town and all that seem to give that impression. I feel like we really struggle with that at least in Utah. CS lewis wrote:
"Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most people call “humble” nowadays: he will not be a sort of greasy, swarmy person, who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody. Probably all you will think about him is that he seems a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him. If you do dislike him it will be because you feel a little envious of anyone who seems to enjoy life so easily. He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all."
I heard this talk this morning on BYUtv and it came in handy for Sunday School because comparisons were mentioned often. It also reminded me of the Larry R. Lawrence talk from the October 2015 Conference, "What Lack I Yet?"

Yes comparisons of if we are making it to the Celestial Kingdom. Or married in the temple. Or if our kids went on a mission. Or if we are "keeping our covenants" Or if we attend enough church. Or if we are serving in the right calling. We grew up in a church that taught us to compare ourselves to the "Measuring stick" of the church. Maybe we should look at HOW the church teaches us to constantly compare ourselves to how we aren't "enough" within the process of making it to the Celestial Kingdom. This would be a good starting point. Forget comparing ourselves to others. Let's focus on what has hung over us since our baptismal day.
