Down Beat 1975 poll-winners' show: 'Spain'

  • A performance of Chick Corea's classic composition 'Spain' from the 1975 'Down Beat' poll-winners' concert.
    Chick Corea - keys
    Hubert Laws - flute
    Bill Watrous - trombone
    George Benson - guitar
    Stanley Clarke - bass
    Lenny White - drums
    Introduced by Quincy Jones.
This performance (and the whole poll-winners' show) was produced by WTTW Chicacgo and distributed by PBS I believe. To the best of my research, this footage has never been commerically available to the general public in any home format. It's been circulating in bootleg trading circles for some years, where I obtained it. I'm sure many of us would love to have a proper DVD of these Soundstage shows! I will happily remove it at the request of the musicians or the copyright holders.

Hubert Laws is the greatest flute player in the world! Jazz or Classical! I'm quoting the great Quincy Jones, from Quincy's autobiography. Hubert Laws is! And still is! My wife and I just heard him live in Chicago March 14th, 2019 at the Studebaker Theatre downtown. Hubert was amazing! Thank you So much for posting!

A truly amazing performance, especially for that time, but now as well. I can't remember ever seeing Stanley playing an upright bass, George and his Super 400, Watrous was amazing, Lenny was hot as always and Chick just smoked it. Never saw this before . I was studying classical guitar at CSUN at the time, guess I missed it. Thanks for sharing.

That's why altho some look down on George now because his later work is very commercial, in my eyes he has nothing to prove. He's done it all in jazz and held his own with the greatest. And he can STILL do it! Quite a few players have tremendous speed and virtuosity, but he has a rare combination of that with lyricism that after all these years still kills me... if you haven't done so, check out the youtube of 'How High the Moon' with GB and Lage Lund - incredible!

Fusion was GOOD for jazz. That made them be able to do this event. Has there been any solidified interest in jazz in 25 or so years. NO! Wynton has not made the music more popular in any way. But Chick, Stanley, Hubert laws, Wayne Shorter, George Benson all brought people into the music and helped them understand the true spirit of the music. It's adventure, power and variety...

I'm surprised Quincy never produced a version of this tune. Even in its original form, it sounded like something he might have created himself. Maybe that's why he never claimed it. there was nothing to add or take away. Although it might have been called 'Brazil'.
