Down Beat 1975 poll-winners' show: 'Work Song'
From the 1975 'Down Beat' poll-winners' show, here's a performance of 'Work Song, dedicated to the great Cannonball Adderley, who passed away that year.
On stage:
Sonny Rollins - tenor saxophone
Rahsaan Roland Kirk - tenor saxophone
Freddie Hubbard - trumpet
Bill Watrous - trombone
Hubert Laws - flute
McCoy Tyner - piano
George Benson - guitar
Stanley Clarke - bass
Lenny White - drums
Airto Moreira - percussion
This performance (and the whole poll-winners' show) was produced by WTTW Chicacgo and distributed by PBS I believe. To the best of my research, this footage has never been commerically available to the general public in any home format. It's been circulating in bootleg trading circles for some years, where I obtained it. I'm sure many of us would love to have a proper DVD of these Soundstage shows! I will happily remove it at the request of the musicians or the copyright holders.

❤❤❤
I'm a guitarist and George Benson is my #1 favorite but I have to say that Hubert and Chick were so effortlessly musical that I felt embarrassed. Great music from all of them!
what a junk bowl - weak song that falls apart immediately
Come on people! Keep this great!
Fucking great!
Stanley Clarc is the magic link to all of these wonderful musicians! 💪
I love the chemistry
i dont think people understand how difficult it is to play the trombone that well
Oh yeah its extremely hard especially 3:22
Alway a fan of Lenny. But this gig overplaying for no reason.
MaCoy!
You bet!
Why was Roland never envited to Monterey jazz fest. What a bummer.
I wish Roland lived for river.
Kooooooool
To bad that they only had 5 minutes of air time and couldn’t really stretch out 🎶
Bill Watrous, what an amazing trombone player!
George still The best
You can not get any better!
Come on! This is great!
This is great!
Where is everyone!
Nice to see the All-Stars cast ! The 70's was my favorite era with Jazz Fusion . Chick sure did write many great songs . What a great era with the addition of electronics , it fulfilled my Hard Rock love . Thanks
He was blind! knocked it out of the park! The greatest!
McCoy! Stan is the man!
The King!
Love Roland! RIP!
This is music!
Eat me! this GREAT!
Is, sorry!
The Circle Breathing Dragon, there will never be another..
Great!
You bet! He was sent from God!
Just much love!
Cool to see a young Stanley Clarke swinging on the upright bass!
🆒️
💯 Kings👏
I'm surprised Quincy never produced a version of this tune. Even in its original form, it sounded like something he might have created himself. Maybe that's why he never claimed it. there was nothing to add or take away. Although it might have been called 'Brazil'.
Больше всего меня поразил Билл Ватроуз, тромбонист.
Sonny Rollins was taken on but got taken down, by Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
Gone to soon! God is having a field day!
Great, Great!
This is fucking great!
The best Corea formation.
Why the new generation can't play like that ?
Slo down apps enables them to copy and youtubes explain all techniques but they are boring needs.
🙏 🙏 🙏
Amazing, timeless.

Such an mazing musician. Thanks for the post...
After this amazing performance most of them went back to their day jobs making disposable pop-fusion.
God bless you RRR.... No one will ever replace....
