It doesn't matter your opinion on the ousting of the Ukrainian President in 2014, or who helped who and how, the will to fight must be present for something like that to happen. That didn't just disappear. People who were willing to die to fight are still there. Literally the same people. There are still many people who would see that as a bigger betrayal than the closer ties to Russia that started all of that. Zelensky convinced people during running he wouldn't shy from Putin and if he just gave away part of Ukraine, which is basically what he'd have to do, the people would naturally wonder what else would he do if threatened. So that would be a big mess. Zelensky would likely have to go. Putin wouldn't make the same mistake twice if he had any brains and would try to at the very least get a puppet government in. Again, not gonna be popular. Civilians went against their own police and government over it before. They were willing to die for it. Thats just one most likely option at the very start of the dominos falling. Who knows? If other leaders stayed it could have turned into civil war at worst. In reality, this whole situation was just was NEVER going to end easily for Ukraine.
